The next-gen MX-5 Miata thread

Looking over the specs,

MX-5 2.0L 118kW/200nM 1003kg(M)/1057(A) $34,490(M)/$36,490(A)

86GT 2.0L 147kW/205nM 1257kg(M)/1278(A) $29,990(M)/$32,490(A)

MX-5 1.5L 96kW/150nM 1003kg(M)/1032(A) $31,990(M)/$33,990(A)

Surprised me with the weight measurement there.

Mazda's goal was to get to the original weight specs, they managed to get it down to the NB category, which to me speaks volumes.

Never did share my car, did I..... I made a pretty close replica (NFS duh) too, but sold her for the Skyline I got now

Stoked. I'd heard the SkyActiv was difficult to ECU-tune, but BBR has a good reputation... so this will likely be reliable.

So, this car is already quicker off the mark than an 86... with this upgrade, it'll be faster at speed as well? :D

Not much of a Increase to me... Still needs a Turbo lol. 3 Mods for under 200hp is to costly. but im pretty sure its worth it to MX5 owners.

The only thing the Maxima needs is a darker color. The character lines they gave it really don't work with anything bright/reflective, but it's fine in the blacks and greens they tend to be sold as.

As much as I wasn't sold on the Maxima in pictures, I'll admit it has presence in person. Like @Tornado says, in darker colours it actually looks pretty decent.

That silver one? At that angle, in that colour, on those wheels, parked that poorly, it looks almost Youabian-sized.

Completely forgot Thunderhill is this weekend. Wish I could watch it!

I love the blue they are using on multiple cars now (which started with the GT-R) but I've grown to love the white that's available as well.

That extra 30hp will be enough to have a Miata that will surprise WRXs in a straight line.

The 2L is anything but a slouch, if you pay the slightest amount of attention to what they actually do in a straight line instead of looking at the power figure and going THAT'S NOT ENOUGH because you're used to 3500lb cars that need 50%+ more power to do the same.

Yeah, didn't Car and Driver run a 14 second 1/4 mile in the stock car? The car is no slouch with no modifications as it is. I think with these mods, a good driver, and some good tires, you could have a 13 second car no problem. (if you are into that sort of thing) My 1990 with a small turbo and ~200hp to the wheels ran a 14.00 with a crappy 60' time and no LSD at 5600ft elevation.

Today's shocking news story: man prefers products of the company that employs him.
I've been a Nissan fan for as long as I've been driving. I've owned 4 of them (x2 B13 Sentra SE-R, x1 B15 Sentra SE, x1 200SX SE-R) and will be purchasing another (B14 SE-L) within the next year. My employment does not influence my love for the brand. In fact, I probably respect Mazda more.

Don't appreciate that comment.

Today's not quite as shocking news story: man gets butthurt over comment made on the internet. :P

In other news, I may be joining the Miata family in the next few months. It won't be a new one but the wifey wants a fun car to cruise around in on nice days and I brought up the idea of a nice NA Miata and she seemed to go for it. The search will begin when it starts warming up next year, which is the the prices will skyrocket I'm sure.

Remains to be seen. Should drop 0.3 or so off the times with those mods.

30 hp on a 160-ish hp car is a nearly 20% increase.

On modern cars, intake and exhaust don't really do much, thanks to re-learning ECUs, MAP sensor adjustment and freer-flowing exhausts. Basically, the only breathing mod nowadays that is guaranteed to produce any power beyond your typical 3-5 hp (which is so little that noise due to conditions can hide the gains) is a header-swap. And even then, that's mostly because you're bypassing some of the pre-cat emissions controls.

This kit doesn't change the exhaust manifold, and gets 30 hp. That there's bound to be almost all chip. And like I said, I'd heard chip-tuning SkyActivs was problematic.

This means it may be possible to hit 200 or more by changing the header. Or not. Mazda SkyActivs have pretty good headers already.

Evidently the 2.0 and 2.5 in the US 3/6 have in fact been posting very considerable gains when retuned for premium, which is not altogether surprising considering they very definitely have the compression ratio to take advantage of better fuel.

If there are gains to be had from the header, we will most definitely see a tradeoff elsewhere in the rev range. The issue with inertia tuning is that the stronger you try to make it, the more it actually becomes a negative elsewhere in the rev range. Honestly, I think the biggest gains we will see from the SkyActiv motors will happen when we find what the fuel system is in fact good for. If it can supply the fueling needed for E85, we may see some real sparks fly.
