Between 1990 and 2005 it looked pretty much like a Porsche 911 from that time period. EXACTLY THE SAME!!!


The Porsche 911 is a glorified Beetle. The NSX shares no similarities whatsoever with the Beetle. None.

I'll make sure to get you some prescription lenses this Christmas if you like? The reality is a 2013 911 looks similar to a 1990 Porsche but not the same at all. One looks like it has 90s styling the other looks modern 2013 beyond. Same goes for the NSX one was much more sculpted (2005) while the other was 90s in look and boxy in edges. To say the shape of the car wasn't modernized and is different along with what is underneath the body. I think you are talking more of aesthetic wise, and not realizing that you are generalizing the entire car, because when you say "exactly the same" you are not only talking about the exterior. You also have to think interior, engine updates or evolution of the engine and then other engineering involved that makes the car faster and more capable. No way is a 911 or NSX a decade ago ever the same
 
It's a trite Clarkson sentiment that he repeats for humor but most people who use it fail to recognize that he's not being serious. What of it?
 
People should have realized long ago (like, before the current studio version of TG) that you can't take much of what Jeremy Clarkson says seriously. Top Gear, as much as I've always loved the show, is not where you go if you're looking for a car review. He also kept on about the 350Z having a French engine, when Nissan licensed their award-winning VQ motors to Renault.

I know Honda took its basis of form over function from the 911 designers, but that's clearly all that they took.
And he also calls Nissans "Datsun".
This isn't all that wrong, though. Nissans used to be under the name Datsun until Nissan wanted their name to hold a larger impact. There was even a point where Nissan adopted Datsun's logo as their own & times in motor racing where the announcers referred to the Nissan Le Mans cars as Datsuns. It's just a throwback to the name before Nissan ultimately phased them out in the 80's.

It's not really any worse than calling an Infiniti a Nissan; they're pretty much still 1 in the same.
 
That wasn't the reason. It spent 6 years in development prior to it's 1990 release & much of the technology it introduced was well ahead of the competition. Then you have to cater in that Honda was going for reliability, yet with enough performance to topple the 348 Ferrari.

The company had to make a profit somewhere.

They did, but the 348 Ferrari it was pitted against had a far shorter tenure on the Ferrari model line up compared to the NSX, which was 1990-2004. After that, it was really in a class of it's own. Ferraris and Porches went on to get ridiculously powered up and fattened whilst the folk at Honda kept the same recipe for its NSX.

The price more or less increased, and the last time I ever saw an NSX in a dealer it was listed at 105,000. But it could be that the dealer could have just marked it up to make a couple extra bucks. I'm under the impression that with cars like these and the GT-Rs the dealers typically pay full price for it from the factory and mark it up to make profit.

Most likely. That and/or possibly the hybrid drive system. I'm actually intrigued as to how Honda will integrate the electric motors with the SH-AWD system for optimum handling and whether the torque vectoring will allow for tail-out action.

I quite like the looks of the new NSX. Take the disguise off and it's a pretty decent looking car.

I just sorta think the whole Anti-Hybrid Sportscar crowd seriously is not even seeing the benefit of this. The Porsche 918 is already showing how well this can work and the package on this car could work as well, maybe even better.

As far as the looks go, I also think it looks great. So what if it doesn't look like the old NSX, I don't recall a rule where a old nameplate has to look like the original one. The fact that a New NSX exists is exciting enough a prospect and it having the thechnology it packs along with the matching looks is just icing on the cake.
 
I think the main thing is that hybrid systems add weight to cars, and many sports car enthusiasts hate weight and believe that the weight gain would negate any performance upgrades that the hybrid system would add. This is usually not the case.

The amount of money and time spent in R&D usually ensures that the hybrid systems in those types of cars always benefit performance, fuel efficiency(in most cases) and still be inexpensive enough for their target consumer(also in most cases).

Tl;Dr: they aren't just throwing in the batteries for the hell of it, there's a real benefit with this technology whether you see it or not.
 
Now, hopefully this time around they give it enough balls to hang with the competition. I want to see this car chasing 458s and stuff.

Rivals such as the 458, SLS etc are a bit far fetched. The power figures are unknown so my best guess for rivals include the 991 Carrera S, Audi R8 4.2 etc.

I think I've fallen in love..

I'll be honest I've really not been taking to this new design but.. suddenly it really works.

Still - I can't help but see the Audi R8 for some reason - I just don't understand why I can't get that image out of my head.
 
The design still hasn't really grown in me. I want to like it, but I just can't get passed it's looks.

To me it looks very safe. So safe it's boring. I still prefered the previous front engined NSX prototype.

To be honest, there's hasnt been anything from Acura exciting for me in over a decade.

That wasn't an NSX, that was the HSV.
