Bleh. After a couple hours, and 40 some-odd shots, these were the only two I was happy with.

I seem to have a hard time keeping the right amount of light in every part of the picture. For instance, the foreground may be fine, while the background may be over exposed, or vice versa. I don't know if its me, the camera, or the conditions I'm shooting in. Gr!

It's the conditions and the aperture settings. I forget how it works, but if you have a higher F-stop setting, you'll let in more light from the background but not so much from the foreground due to the change in depth of field and vice versa.

Ahh! 💡

I heard and knew about the having larger aperature F-Stop settings would allow the background to be clearer. However, I assumed that it would also gather more detail from the foreground as well, so I was just setting the aperature as high as possible. So, I need to find a nice, comfy medium between the two.

Thanks emad!

Too lazy to make the thumbnail so here's a direct link.

No Warning

Pretty cool shot there emad. The picture seems to hold a lot of feeling of rockin' out! :)

I went to the park with my mom and fired off a couple shots.

We shot each other. She has a Nikon D70 with a Nikkor 85-400mm lense

This one turned out better than I thought. It was the last picture I took, and I was mainly just messing around. Then, while looking through the pictures, I liked it. I think its more about the colors in the picture, than the subject.

Leaf me alone! Bahahaha!

i like the colors on the leaf one better. Something about the deep greens on it.

Aaaand one more - it's a running concept. I like how it turned out but I don't like the angle since it makes it hard to tell just what the lens filter is. No adjustments/tweaks

I'm still surprised that this camera is in such good condition despite being more than 20 years old. There's one ding at the bottom where it probably scraped a tripod pretty hard, and the battery compartment's lid won't stay shut without rubber bands or a lot of pressure from my thumb. It still works though 👍

I do too. I just thought the shooting one was funny. I think my mom has one of me from her perspective.

Edit: It snowed like hell last night. Theres at least a foot or two worth of it.

It also seems like a lot of others are grabbing pictures of their cameras, so I did the same with mine. Although, some photo editing went into this.

Nice shots Goomba, that last one looks really good with the extra saturation and blur 👍 .

Emad - I like the camera shot, and the street shot. Those old SLR Pentax cameras can take a beating and still push on. I've been using one from school, but I hate it... film cameras :yuck:

I went out to shoot some photos of friends biking.

(I didn't notice I used the same border until it was too late, and i'm too lazy to change them).

@ Goomba - the camera shot is excellent. Y'know, you can get a similareffect using a wide angle lens? :D
@ Antihero - the first one is effing AMAZING

I actually kinda like film cameras. I'd love to go out and buy a used film based SLR with a nice set of lenses on ebay for a few $100 or so but I don't have access to a darkroom and film is expensive.

Yeah, I bet. I haven't been able to convince myself to plunk down the money for a real wide angle lense. Besides, the current Canon EF-S is doing okay, although I think its biggest problem is the operator. :)

When I was looking to buy a SLR camera, I considered getting a top of the line film SLR, over a mediocre digital SLR. However, I knew most of my applications and needs for the prints would be digital. If I had any desire to have physical prints, I definatly would of gone with a film SLR.

emad, I noticed you asked in about how much it would be to go into the realm of dSLR. Well, you can probably pick up a new Canon Digital Rebel for pretty damn cheap now that the new Digital Rebel XT is out. I would try to go for the just the body since you seem to mix wide angle with macro shots. Maybe something like a Sigma/Tamaron 70mm-200mm lense. Or, if you want something with a lot of range, Canon offers a lense with a 28mm-200mm lense. The lenses would probably be anywhere from $300 to $500 USD.

All in all, I think you definatly have enough skill to where you could use a dSLR effectively. I sort of bought the camera and am trying to fill into its mighty big shoes.

I shoot both film and digital, and I can safely say I never use my film camera. I've got everything I need to properly shoot film, but it seems pointless when compared to the advantages of digital. If you're willing to dish out the large amount of cash to get a dSLR, and are willing to spend the time learning how to use it and to learn to control the powers of photoshop; it will all pay off.

I know how to use the SLR quite well. It's just the aperture stuff I need a refresher course on. As for photoshop, I know full well how to use it. My problem now is that my laptop cannot handle editing images with dimensions larger than 1280x960. It's the primary thing that's holding me back since I wanted to do stuff for print as well.

Ahhhh, that is a problem. My Canon shoots somewhere around 3100 x 2400 (not exact, but close enough) on the largest formats. I imagine Anti's Nikon shoots a bit better than that.

As far as shooting modes, what do you guys use? I was using Large (fine pixel quality) JPGs, but now I've moved to shooting with RAW. The files are huge, but I enjoy being able to go in and being able to change WB (with a lot more accuracy than the camera offers) and other features. If I find I need to do more, I'll throw it in PS.

My camera shoots 2592x1944 shots but it has the option of cropping out a bit of the top and bottom to shoot the same aspect ratio of a standard film camera (3:2)

As for quality, mine doesn't support RAW, but it lets me choos size based on megapixels and whether or not I want fine or normal. I have it in it's maximum setting of 5mp and fine pixel quality.

Naw Goomba, my photos are about the same as yours - 3008x2000. I shoot in JPG with the highest quality. RAW would be nice but the files are just too large, specially when I back up every photo I take. I've got two folders - one for modified pictures, one for backups of the modified plus extras/bracketed photos. When shooting I use full manual, burst mode on, manual ISO (I try to keep it below 400, the Nikon's got a tendency to give alot of noise in photos), auto focusing (for most of the time), and there's alot of other little settings that are specific to the camera.

Hrm. It seems like the Nikon produces better looking, larger pictures, but I don't really have any proof. It just seems engraved in my mind that it is.

I have the same 'two-folder' setup as you do. However, a lot of my images I delete. I snap off quite a few that just plain suck or I was just experimenting or whatever. I only save the originals for pictures I like.

I'm not sure why I said "shooting mode", it was bad wording on my part. However its interesting you do everything manually. When I first got the camera, I tried shooting everything manually. Now I've switched to Aperature Priority (Av) for most of my pictures. It seems a lot of my problems (and what I'm trying to work on) is in the DOF area, so it makes more sense to shoot in Av. I'll use Shutter Priority when I'm looking to blur or sharpen quick moving objects, but I typically don't do a whole lot of action shots.

From what i've seen when comparing the Rebel vs. the d70 i've found that: The d70's photos look alot sharper and precise, but lack good color and saturation. The Rebel's look almost creamy or soft with awesome color and deep saturations. That's what "they" say really, but after using both; I haven't found much difference. Both are good cameras (although I like my d70 more muahah).

I agree. Both capture images wonderfully, but it seems as if each have their strong points. Although, the Drebel has more. Mainly because both myself AND Der Alta have 'em. We'll win because of our numbers. :)

Also, who is in favor of changing this thread's title to, "The Emad, Anti, and Goomba thread"? :)

Whatever man, we all know nothing compares to this

Goomba, watch yourself... we d70 types don't mess around :mischievous:
hahahahahahaa, that's classic man!

I agree, we should change the name of this thread. I wonder if we can convince ITR to do that for us :P

Not I. :grumpy:

:P

I've been in a real photography slump as you can tell. I do have a few pics on my camera that I havn't taken off yet that I think are worthy enough to show off. :)

ITR, you can be included too, since it was your awesome idea to come up with the thread.

Oooh! How about "Photo Dump". Its informative and contains potty humour!

Just take your time. If you ever run out of ideas, keep in mind that your camera's lens is absolutely amazing for macro shots. Grab a flashlight or two for additional lighting and make use of it :)

Some self-portrait nudes would be cool ITR, :embarrassed:

Where's DiabolicalMask been? He's been MIA for awhile now 👎.
True.
It's been a while since I last took a picture with my camera. Not only do I have little time for it, but also it's my brother who carries the camera around more and I rarely see it now. :grumpy:
GT4 (and its PhotoMode) is also to blame. :embarrassed:

How did you take this picture? What are you holding and what is in the background?

Oh, and great pictures, everyone! I'm amazed. 👍

I don't know the proper term for it, but it's a little eye piece you look through to magnify negatives/contact sheets when checking for dust or scratches. I held it up infront of me, far enough from the camera to allow me to focus through it. I pointed it at a grid of fluorescent lights and focused through it.

Nikon has invited www.bytesector.com to attend their press event where they'll unveil their 2005 D series line up. That means I'll probably get to go :D:D:D

I just gotta figure out if the time to get to downtown and back twice in the same day is worth it. I've got an audioslave concert that same night :P

Ok, thanks. Very well thought. 👍

Cool.
I'm looking forward to the D50. Already got the manual... :D

Oh **** that, I just bought my d70 and it's already obsolute. It would be nice if Nikon offered a trade in program.
