Fantastic shots Mog 👍

How do you get that retro look like antihero has also?

Thanks! I get the look found in my photos by simply adjusting the 'Colour Balance' in Photoshop. 👍

Got my new flash in today, man that thing is huge, I think I need a grip to make my camera look bigger in comparison lol

here is a pic of it, with a gallon of water next to it for size reference.

Is it the 580?

I've had a bunch of slagging for using mine, but I don't care because it helps me make good shots.

Wait 'til you see a Powershot G7 with a 430EX... It looks very strange!

My own camera (a small Concord point-and-shoot jobby) died last year, and I've been promising myself a new, better camera ever since. I've been half-heartedly looking around since then, but last week I finally went ahead and bought one. So I'm now the proud owner of a Nikon D40. Hurrah! The theory is that I'll learn how to use an SLR and play with the settings, whilst resisting the urge to stick it in auto all the time and just shoot away.

(Thanks dad for giving me his 70-210mm lens from his old Nikon SLR to accompany the 18-55mm the D40 came with, until I get my own. The 70-210mm lens is older than me, yet still fits the D40, which is nice.)

All this means I'll probably pop in here more often, and ask questions to the point where you'll despise the sight of me :sly: I'll kick off with this:

Tripod or monopod? I'll want to get one to begin with, and maybe get the other later on. Which would I, a relative photograpical noob, be better off with? I'd use it at shows usually - lots of moving around.

Thanks!

If you're gonna be moving around a lot and carrying it with you all day, I think a monopod would be better.

I say get the tripod and just not open the legs. It'll serve the same purpose.

Congrats on the D40! My boss has the D80 and it is a nice ride. I'm sure you'll grow to love the 40. I'm considering picking up one in the (probably distant) future myself.

That set up you can hand hold so I don't see the need for either one. Once you start getting above 10-12 lbs is when you'd want to use a monopod. For longer exposures than ~ 1/10 of a second, you'll want a tripod, though.

thanks. expect a huge update of shots soon, with 858 shots today and another 600 in the past week, an army has begun.

heres a few

antihero, where on Earth do you go to get all of these cool grunge looking shots? It seems like the kind of photography you'd associate with Urban Exploration, it's all really cool stuff. 👍

thanks. my friends and i put alot of time into looking for abandonments and looking at the history behind them. i keep them all bookmarked on google earth, and usually whore them for all the photos i can. it's amazing that some of these places exist and go unnoticed by the general public, completely forgotten and their beauty ignored.

^I really envy you for that.
Love the lighting on those first two shots. Keep them coming. 👍

antihero - I also had that little itch to explore things un the forgotten underside of large cities. I was actually just talking about one today with my parents as we were about to drive by it, but when we went by, it was being torn down. Such a shame that I didn't ever actually have it in myself to get off my ass and check the place out, and now it is too late.

I know that feeling. I really feel like I've missed out on a few amazing places because I kept procrastinating on going in. Oh well.

Thanks DM :) , here's a few more for ya. All of these are from the same building.

^Indeed (as usual). Love the composition in #2. 👍

Guys, I need some opinions here.
Basically, I've been playing around with photoshop, in particular trying HDR pictures.
Anyway, tell me what you think of these, please:

I really like this last one, but maybe I overcooked it a bit. In the horizon line, the effect is too obvious, don't you think?

Thanks alot gents

DM are those both HDRs? I think the first one is well done, too many HDR shots look all whacked out. That one is spot on and the black and white editing is great. One thing I noticed was that the top has some sort of weird almost vector like lines going through it in the sky. Almost looks cool though.
I really like the second shot. I like the way it has an almost nostalgic/faded look to it (intentional or not I'm not sure hah).

DM, I like the HDRs. Seem to have lost quite a lot of quality in the Saving for Web though. Any chance you could thumbnail in some full-quality ones?

Thanks for your inputs. 👍

Yes, they're both HDRs. Even I was surprised to see such a "natural" result from the first one.
I also noticed those lines in the sky, but I have no idea what they are (they don't show in the original shot).

About the second shot, that was exactly what I was aiming for. ;)
Thanks. 👍

I saved them like I always do (i.e. as a normal save with quality at "12", which is the max)...
I'm surprised you say that... :/

How did you bracket your pictures?
+1, 0, -1EV (made with the software, not "in situ")

Here are a few of the shots I had on my card from ages ago. Nothing special.

I love the chess one, you should play around taking more shots trying to get some really cool angles, and play with the DOF too.
