:ouch:

Pinkie with mane down is best Pinkie.

To start off, I didn't mind the whole Alicorn thing. To me, it seemed like the natural progression in the overall storyline. But this episode set a new low for the show. As in being downright abysmal. The first problem for me is the damn songs. Basically, if you dislike the songs in the show, the episode is near unwatchable. I'm dumbfounded by how the majority of these songs are every bit as literal as Rebecca Blacks, Friday. C'mon, put some effort into it.

Well if you dislike the singing normally in the show it's not really their fault if that's a the reason you don't like the episode. I loved the singing over the rest of the show with the rare exception, but most of the songs in this one were very poor compared to what I've come to expect from the show.

What makes all this worse, is that the last 2 episodes (as in the ones before EP.13) have been utterly pointless. Nothing was achieved. In other words, this episode could've easily been a two parter. Something it clearly needed to be in order to tell the story properly.
11 and 12 were great episodes....

More was achieved with those than the vast majority of episodes in the past 3 seasons, save for finales and intros. The thing that makes the show what it is is that it's mostly day-to-day adventures with no real effect on the future episodes other than the rare plot development episode. It's a fairly unique formula, come to think of it. Day to day stuff with an overarching plot that's developed little bit by little bit through little details in the episodes.

Few other problems that struck me as odd. Why would Twilight, someone who's supposedly really clever, use a spell that she, A, doesn't know the effect off, and B, doesn't know if she'll be able to counter, should things turn bad.
Because she's incredibly curious and lets that get the better of her sometimes. Want it need it spell is another example of her using magic she doesn't fully understand. She learns by trial and error when there's nothing to be found in a book. I mean...why would Twi travel back in time to warn herself not to travel back in time? She's just like that sometimes.
Also, how come no one in the Apple family reacted to Applejack missing, and Pinkie attempting to do her work? Same with Rarity's sister.
They had 22 minutes to make the episode. Most of this is to be implied, which is exactly why it would've been better off as a two, or even 3 parter. But again, that likely wasn't up to the writers.

It no longer has good writing, or clever jokes. Selling toys has become the nr. 1 priority, and Faust's abscence is really starting to show. In my opinion, we went from a great 1'st season, to a very mediocre 2nd. season (with a few exceptions), to a mostly horrible 3rd. season.
...

Gonna have to disagree strongly on all points, here. I don't know specifically why you think that so I can't really try to dispute it.

And don't worry about stepping on toes. No one here should have hard feelings toward anyone for disagreeing, so long as people are discussing it reasonably.

Also, it should of been much, much later on, like at the earliest, season 5. Atleast the whole becoming an alicorn thing was cooler than I expected.

Yeah, this is the another reason I expect that this was planned out long before anyone had confirmed a fourth season.

Also, you might get a kick from this remix:

Oh, I did. So glad he didn't screw with the vocals and make another Chipmunk cover of Love Is In Bloom.

Again, totally putting aside any pottential effects on the show's canon mechanics, I. :censored:ing. Love. Her. Wings.

HNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG

What makes all this worse, is that the last 2 episodes (as in the ones before EP.13) have been utterly pointless. Nothing was achieved. In other words, this episode could've easily been a two parter. Something it clearly needed to be in order to tell the story properly.

The only thing they could have done to make those 2 episodes better would have been to ditch the 2 week gap separating them. I wouldn't mind if they were a week apart though, and there's nothing wrong with trying something new in terms of how both episodes intertwined. It's a really neat idea, in fact. The second part to that is one of the top 3 episodes this season IMO.

While I won't stop watching it altogether just yet, I don't think the show is ever returning to what made it great. It no longer has good writing, or clever jokes.

Untrue. This season has had predominantly well written episodes, save for the odd hiccups like the Crystal Empire two-parter, Keep Calm and Flutter On (with how suddenly Discord was reformed) and the season finale. M. A. Larson, Corey Powell and Dave Polsky did excellent jobs with "Magic Duel", "Sleepless in Ponyville", "Just For Sidekicks" and "Games Ponies Play".

I have noticed that most of the clever jokes dropped off towards the end of the season, but that didn't make the last few episodes worse at all. Plus it wasn't one of the reasons for the finale being bleh.

Selling toys has become the nr. 1 priority, and Faust's abscence is really starting to show. In my opinion, we went from a great 1'st season, to a very mediocre 2nd. season (with a few exceptions), to a mostly horrible 3rd. season.

I thought the first 2 seasons were great. The second didn't have the same feel as the first, but there was plenty of great episodes and well-written stories. The S2 finale was considerably more entertaining that the one we got in S1 as well. Season 3 may have been half of what the previous 2 were, but since Too Many Pinkie Pies, there have only been 3 episodes that didn't hit the right notes. The majority of the other ones were good/great.

Also, Faust's absence really isn't the reason behind the show apparently becoming "mediocre". But since S2 there has been a clear increase in terms of pushing new merch on Hasbro's part. It paid off in season 2 though, with the Royal Wedding being a success on the whole. But in S3 you could feel it even more, and while the results aren't exactly great (S3 premier and finale episodes), I still think the rest of the episodes this season make up for it.

And I appreciate you posting. I may not quite agree with some of the things you listed, but you aren't being unreasonable. 👍

Faust was involved with the writing of the second season.

Personally I thought Season 2 was better than Season 1 while Season 3 was the same as Season 2. Just my opinion.

So yeah, yesterday's episode:
It was surprisingly worse than I would have expected, even with the whole Twilight becoming alicorn thing going on, the episode itself was pretty broken, and really bad structured compared to older episodes and more recent episodes.

First off is pacing, and my god there are some serious issues with it, pretty damn big ones as the whole foundation of the episode(Twi's accidental spell) is shown in a flashback, out of nowhere. No background or buildup to the story to be had, it literally skips the first act and jumps straight into the second to then show a brief mention of what it used to be the first act, second act is just songs used as an expository device, which is well done but the songs themselves were ... boring, like really boring, the VA can have a good voice, but these songs work more like a musical, not having a good beat or tune for it makes the episode really hard to watch, as for third act...

Well, third act and the whole episode premise encapsulates everything, how come across that Twilight's screw up fixing automatically makes her a princess? why is the main cast acting like a supplementary plot device rather than active characters in the story? (as it has been for ... pretty much the whole series) who thought that making Twilight a princess wouldn't affect her interaction with other characters in future episodes? and most importantly, who thought that the show should shift focus from the message(friendship) to Twilight?

It's been a thing going on for quite some time now(several episodes of S3 showed this), and now the only few good episodes I can relate on this season are pretty much the ones where Twilight is absent, which shows how the show used to be. I'm not sure what to think to be honest, but I saw it coming so it's not that surprising. I guess I'll just look forward to the slice of life episodes, the ones that hopefully wont be affected by this whole thing and can maintain the same charms that the S1 and S2 episodes once had.

There is a great sense of disappointment by this, in one hand how the story has gone, and in the other is how poorly written and poorly paced the series is becoming.

There is a great sense of disappointment by this, in one hand how the story has gone, and in the other is how poorly written and poorly paced the series is becoming.

If you were only referring to the finale in relation to the writing quality, then I can agree to an extent.

The episodes preceding it this season were fine in terms of pacing, apart from Keep Calm and Flutter On. If you think about it, the writing hasn't been exactly consistent in any of the seasons, since each one has a select few poor episodes anyway. I just hope season 4 doesn't mainly consist of episodes on-par with the Coronation.

Every season's had their bad episodes. These just stand out more because there were only 13, as opposed to the few duds being buried under 26 episodes that are good.

But yeah, this Twilicorn thing will definitely affect interaction, but how much and in what way we can't be sure. With the right spin they could bring the focus back to the others. The focus on Twi seems like it was meant to be building toward this with how much stronger it was in Season 3, so now that she's already an Alicorn she doesn't have anything to prove about how powerful she is.

And it wasn't her fixing the screw up that made her a princess, it was how she did it. Celly even said outright that writing her own form of magic is something not even historically great wizards like Starswirl have managed. It's just that with 22 minutes of time they had to get the big points stated and hope the audience would fill in the blanks.

Think I'm gonna try to lighten the mood here because it feels abit down.

Hey Garrett, if you're not happy with being Daring's BF, then I can take over.

They're not even good guys to be married to.

It's not the fact that they're guys I'm worried about. It's which guys.

The last one isn't gay if you consider that I went to a formal get-together with friends or something (I don't even know these people D: )

Understandable.

And Glaze and Omnipony could be there as DJs for the music. So...you get get back stage, so even better. : D

Wow. Got more responses that I thought I would. I can't possible try to refute all of them without writing a comment taking up the entire page, and regardless, I'm sure most of you aren't interested in me doing that. But if anyone wants to, I'd be happy to continue the discussion via PM.

I will try to further my point in here a little, though.
I want to compare it to the season 2 finale. I know they are very different, though I think that has a lot more to do with the amount of time they had to work with, rather than what they actually wanted to do. One o you say that they used the songs to advance the plot, but do you honestly think this was a good idea? Isn't there a point where songs become to literal in thier lyrics, to actually be considered good? In my opinion, there is. Which is why I dispised the songs of the episode.

This was also a slight problem in the season 2 finale, but it wasn't filled to the brink with songs, and the last song was actually good. As in, it sounded like a real song. For the first time, we had a song that wasn't discribing what was happening in the scene. Instead, it aimed to bring a happy and emotional tone to what was happening. They tried to do this is the season 3 finale as well, but it fails on account of the lyrics just being silly (IMO).

I certainly don't want to give the impression that season 3 hasn't had any good episodes. Trixie's return and the Wonderbolt Academy were both standouts for me. Scootalo's episode had a ton of heart, with some humor mixed into it. But when you have massive potential in the likes of Keep Calm and Flutter On and the season finale, and you screw it up due to time constraints, I just have to question what they're doing with the show.

I'm sorry for the long posts. This is why I'll keep any future talk about the episode over PM, as I'll otherwise just fill up the thread with my opinions. :)

Good day everybody.

I thought of that, actually. I'm not a big fan of their Dubstep efforts though, but a free pass is a free pass.

I don't think it was a terrible idea, but the majority of the songs were disappointing and certainly below-par for this series. They seemed to serve more of a key role in this episode in order to get everything over and done with in 22 minutes, and apart from 1 or 2 songs that were well composed - not to mention brilliantly sung - the rest of them fell flat.

Good day everybody.

Please...

The long posts this thread use to see dwarf anything we could put out about a single episode. We use to fill entire pages with page-lenght posts made entirely of text when The Night That Never Ended was updating.

And advancing the plot with songs was a good idea, but only because otherwise it would've been them just literally stating everything that was going on. Which would be just as cut and dry without the speed that comes with the music. Seems like their choices were "Plain dialogue to get the point along quickly" and "Plain lyrics accompanied with a beat to get the point along slightly faster", I think they made the right choice.

And I love This Day Aria, and still liked BBBFF. Most of the music in the series has been along the lines of Disney stuff. There is a point where music cab be too literal, yes, but at the same time they can use it to further the plot in a meaningful way without making it sound like they're just adding music to their usual lines. Smile Smile Smile, This Day Aria, Winter Wrap Up were some great examples of this. They were songs that managed to further the plot rather than just accompany it, and at the same time they were all great.

8: Me and Cheerilee become best friends. (Seems legit... Though I would fear for Cheerilee's sanity if this were to be true.)

10: Get Doctor Whooves' cutie mark. (Do I get the TARDIS with that?)

14: Fluttershy and me win a million bits. (YEAH!!! Money!!)
15: Got drunk with Discord at Screwball's Christmas Party. (But I make a conscious effort to not drink alcohol... EVER!!! How does that work?)
16: Get banished to the moon with Silver Spoon. (Good, I would need a punching bag while I'm there... I mean, no, no. I'm not THAT cruel... I'd put some padding on her first)
17: Go to the Grand Galloping Gala with Big Mac. (This means I am either: Gay; using it as a way to the Gala in order to see Luna, or we're there to make the Gala go completely wrong for everyone else... Again.)
18: Switch lives with Applejack. (NOOO! That involves too much working, and not enough being lazy and useless!! But other than that, seems legit.) (Wait, only for one day, ah that's good then)

So yeah, #5 is still the best one so far.

And yes, I saw the first one of these things when the idea was first started, only just now have I figured out how to actually do it, because the description of the idea was confusing.
