If you buy a complete PC system and one thing goes faulty, you have to return the whole damn thing, and I mean even the keyboard and mouse if you want your warranty honoured, you cannot open the PC case because it will have tamper proof stickers on it.

On the other hand, if you build your own PC then you can do whatever you like with it, but I doubt if anyone will be building their own Thrustmaster wheel anytime soon ?

I have never seen a desktop "PC" that the side cannot be removed to add something to the available slots. Such as an updates video card, sound card, etc. Or adding a slave HDD in the available bay. I have had HP send me replacement parts. And then there is memory stick upgrades...

Laptops and Apple products, yes I can understand. They don't want you fiddling around internally. They are not designed to be upgraded by the consumer.

 Apple towers, by design, have been some of the most accessable pieces of hardware in the PC world for almost 15 years. A simple button press on the G3/G4 case allowed you open the hinged side of the case with easy access to nearly every component.

The G5/Intel Pro case is a simple latch to remove the entire side. Unless you're talking about an iMac which doesn't really have upgradable architecture and wasn't designed to, your statement could not be further from the truth.

That said, there's a difference between a PC tower which is designed to be opened and allow you to replace individual components and a closed unit like the wheel which is really not designed to be opened and fiddled with. It's fine if you're familiar and comfortable doing that. But for the average person, it's not a viable solution. I think at this point, Thrustmaster realizes they have a problem with the fans and they're just looking for the cheapest solution for themselves.

In the USA that warranty from HP and Dell etc will be "CSR" Customer Self Replace - they send you the part with a return UPS or Fedex lable and you open the case replace the part and ship the bad part back at their expense.

That is how a real technology company honours their product warranty.

This nonsense about having to ship a product back at customer expense is just that - nonsense.

At this juncture TM needs to be careful they don't set themselves up for a class action lawsuit. Because if it can be shown hat they knew that they where shipping junk and they conspired to hide the fact and stall people until the warranty expires or refuse reasonalble requests to honour their warranty they might end up spendign more to defend and then settle than they would have spent just recallign and fixing the bloody things int he first place.

Hell, they could even arrange to have the retailers regional service centers around the US and other countries be used to perform the upgrade/repair.

Excuse me if you have mentioned this already, but is the fan on the current T500 you are using right now functioning quietly, or does it act up like practically every other T500 out there?

Yep - the replacement T500 will start wailing its fan about 20 minutes into a session. It comes and goes. I expect one day the fan will simply stop working.

wheel is incredible

Lol .This is what i do also . It takes me back to when i was young and we had had our first colour tv's and my dad used to bang the top of the tv to try and get a picture.

But 9 times out of 10 i cant hear it anyhow as i have either my headphones on or the surround sound is cranked up.

:) i think i might pick it apart one day as it sounds as though its a cable hitting the fan.
cant think of anything else that would make it sound that way :s

love the fact that you actually can fix it though with a simple slap ;)

LogiForce
I had the same thing with mine. Only a week after purchase and it craps out.

I'm thinking of this one: http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/std/sku=papst_60mm

16db instead of the 19.9db of yours. Plus Papst is a very reliable fan maker. I have experience with their fans in my pc.
Keep me up-to-date on this if you will.

Oh and I have a V2, if that matters...

I've gone through the hoops of the TM support, uploaded a video and all that jazz!! Waiting for the top cover and fan to arrive. I'll report back once I have it apart and replaced.

I'm always checking to see if the wheel base actually feels cool and not like it's overheating. Most of the time I game with surround headphones, so it helps in drowning out the noisy bugger when it starts up.

As long as the fan keeps doing what it's suppose to do, I can live with it for now. I will keep the hand slap suggestion in mind though. :)

My fanatec pwts does exactly the same, its very loud and it can also be cured with a slight handslap, actually i tell a lie. it used to take a slight handslap but now it takes several very hard hand hurting slaps. will change the fan soon

same here, i use beats by dre studios which has noise cancellation aswell so i cant hear anything when the engine is on :) not even other peoples mics etc.
but as soon as you stop driving you can hear it slightly.

ill give you an update some day, i havr to see how it looks inside and what is causing this.

I recently received my T500RS V4. Having read all the issues that could happen, I made sure to checked them out.

For example the screws that could come off etc.

So far so good and I hope it stays that way. Normal play time is typically 1-2 hours on GT5, fan seems ok and it does not seem to be so hot.

My setting on the T500RS is 80% FFB from the tuning menu via PC.

Impression so far is really good and I would hope that TM did indeed step up their QC for these wheels.

Cheers

I so badly want this wheel now, especially with that fantastic looking Ferrari F1 rim they are releasing.

So my questions, I have a G27 currently, almost a year old (got it November last year for GT5), is it a worthwhile upgrade? I can almost halve what I actually pay through selling my G27 for around £200 and paying £150 hard cash on the T500, then another £129 on the rim so money is not much of a bother to me.

Is it definately worth the upgrade?

No question, 100% for sure, certain. The G27 is a great wheel, but seriously, the T500 makes it feel like a toy.

It'll rip your arms off ;)

You may wanna wait a couple of weeks though to see what people have to say about the new Fanatec CSW

Depending on your current preferences, you might also have to factor in the price of the standalone shifter too.
Even though I'm looking at the F1 wheel add-on as well, the shifter would still be a must-buy for me to complete the options open to me.

Having made this move. I will say that the T500 is a very solid wheel. Much more precise, realistic, powerful, and faster.

So with that I would say yes. Major upgrade. However there is the fan issue coming up in many units. Seems they want the wheel sent to them or send you a "fan and cover" so you can repair their faulty product. Genius if it's even legal. Hahaha

As well previously mentioned, if you can wait a bit. It be a good idea to see what is coming from Fanatec.

Also don't sell G27. Keep a back up wheel if you are a daily racer. :)

Not overly concerned about the shifter. But again, not much of a bother for me if I chose to upgrade to that also. Problem I have with the Fanatecs are price. I have seen the T500 for as low as £344. Whic after selling my G27 could easily become £144-£190 depending on how much I get.

As you're in the UK, I'll let you know that when my fan went wrong, TM collected the wheel from me, took it back to France, repaired it and got it back to me in 2 days.

I don't know if this was because I was an early adopter and they have changed their policy or if the outrageous fix it yourself model only applies in places like the US.

My concerns with the new Fanatec are the same; price which we're not really sure on yet for the UK (Prob 600 quid with pedals and maybe another ton if you want fixed paddles) and if it will actually be any better than the T500.

Not to mention I want the Ferrari F150 wheel add on so much! :P

Sounds like good service if they came to pick it up and bougght it back to you! Must love us Europeans :D

After my dealings with warranty. There is a bit of envy for his treatment for his warranty claim.

Oh yeah, the French and us have a wonderful history of getting along famously ;)

As I say, I'm not sure if the reason for the service I got was the time or location.

And yeah, I'm kidding myself that I'm not gonna buy the f1 wheel and game on release. :D

WARRANTY INFORMATION
Worldwide, Guillemot Corporation S.A. (“Guillemot”) warrants to the consumer that this Thrustmaster product will be
free from material defects and manufacturing flaws for a period of two (2) years from the original date of purchase.

Should the product appear to be defective during the warranty period, immediately contact Technical Support, who will
indicate the procedure to follow. If the defect is confirmed, the product must be returned to its place of purchase (or any
other location indicated by Technical Support).
Within the context of this warranty, the consumer’s defective product will, at Technical Support’s option, be either
repaired or replaced.
Where authorized by applicable law, the full liability of Guillemot and its subsidiaries (including for
indirect damages) is limited to the repair or replacement of the Thrustmaster product. The consumer’s legal rights with
respect to legislation applicable to the sale of consumer goods are not affected by this warranty.

This warranty shall not apply: (1) if the product has been modified, opened, altered, or has suffered damage as a result
of inappropriate or abusive use, negligence, an accident, normal wear, or any other cause not related to a material
defect or manufacturing flaw; (2) in the event of failure to comply with the instructions provided by Technical Support;
(3) to software not published by Guillemot, said software being subject to a specific warranty provided by its publisher.
Additional warranty provisions

In the United States of America and in Canada, this warranty is limited to the product’s internal mechanism and external
housing. Any applicable implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose,
are hereby limited to two (2) years from the date of purchase and are subject to the conditions set forth in this limited
warranty. In no event shall Guillemot Corporation S.A. or its affiliates be liable for consequential or incidental damage
resulting from the breach of any express or implied warranties. Some States/Provinces do not allow limitation on how
long an implied warranty lasts or exclusion or limitation of incidental/consequential damages, so the above limitation
may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other legal rights which vary
from State to State or Province to Province.

The legal requirements will vary in different countries, even states as described above to what your consumer rights are. In some countries the manufacturer of the product will be responsible for carraige costs for returned and replaced items. This may NOT be the case in all territories. What seems clear is that they will only offer the legal rights you are entitled to for your region and is one reason we will have conflicting cases reported here for what was done/offered regards postage etc.

I would suggest to anyone that has a problem to contact support and put forward your case in a pleasant but concerned manner. Do remember these are people you are dealing with and in such a job will come across all manners of attitude/frustration on a daily basis. Their knowledge of the particular product may not be that great as the company makes lots of products. Their job is to record and forward the complaint/case to the required department or staff.

By all means express what you want and make them stick to upholding their warrenty conditions/responsibilities. You are not by law required to send a video etc. That may help them but that is their job to determine the fault and determine repair or replacement. You will have to go through the "dummy questions" which seem obvious but in many cases the problem is something simple the consumer hasnt done. It is their duty to go through that process of elimination.

Furthermore, Thrustmaster sending a part to the customer to d.i.y fix the component is strictly against their own Warrenty conditions and should not have been authorised or dealt with in such a way. I would not accept any short handling on their part and hold them to their own terms and conditions. Be firm but be polite and you will usually find "customer service" is a two way thing.

Any of you that decide to replace your fan are in breach of your WARRANTY so do so at your own discretion. If further problems happen do be aware you have invalidated your WARRANTY. Long story short trying to fix a dodgy fan issue yourself could create a bigger problem later. Its your call on what to do.

If I get the problem with the fan which could happen in the future Ive already decided to go the "Customer Service Option". Though having a spare wheel around reduces the pain.

Man what has this thread devolved into?:( just a few weeks ago if a newbie came in this thread asking if he should order a t500rs everyone would give him a united answer (hell yeah!).

If I was running Thrustmaster I'd have a representative at this site. All site members will deal directly with that guy and he'd make 100% sure that you guys are happy.

[quickie edit] Granted, since I know MildAshers runs iRacing I happen to know a few t500rs owners do run with CSPs. So you might want to keep that in mind if you know what I mean. Not sure how much better the CSPs are but I do know they are regarded as clearly superior.

I still want that F1 wheel too but keep in mind the middle dials do not work. Doesnt bother me much personally cause I can still map 25+ buttons on the PC but keep that in mind too

I think the answer is still hell yeah with a couple of caveats:

- There is a known issue with the fan which some folk have been asked to fix themselves.

- There is a new high end wheel coming from Fanatec imminently, which may or not be better.

I received my wheel last week and put in nearly 8hrs on it. I have not experienced any fan issues at all. I actually thought i had a defect because it would never turn on even after an hour on GT5. Just a couple nights ago i did finally hear it after playing Dirt3 PC but it was barely noticeable. Seems like the fan only turns on when it needs to. Perhaps an improvement was made here? 👍

I'll check my version number. Is it under the wheel base and is it easy to identify? I didn't see anything on the box.

edit: Checked under the wheel, its a version 4. It did not have this marked on the box.
