The University Thread

Ahh philosophy.

My worst A level result was in philosophy. I took it hoping to do political philosophy but got God, morality and whether the world exists/can we trust our senses.

For me studying about moral philosophy seems much harder too. :boggled:

I just had a mock Pre-U Philo/Theo exam on Monday. It was godawful and I hate it. Especially Hick and Polkinghorne. Damn them.

Just applied to Auckland University a few minutes ago. I'm going for a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and minoring in Anthropology. I'll be able to move straight onto a Stage II (2nd year) course in French, and hopefully a Stage III course by the second semester, which is cool. :D

Very glad I elected to not take philosophy based on what I'm reading so far...

Also first post in this thread so some quick info:
>School: Kennesaw State University
>Major: Information Systems with Information Security Assurance minor
>Expected to graduate Fall of 2014

KSU is pushing their "Hybrid" courses big time, which is a mix between face-to-face lectures and online classes. We meet once a week and do the rest of our stuff online. A professor for one of those hybrid courses I have this semester missed the first class session and was out of the country last week, so four weeks into the semester we've only seen her once and just had a project deliverable due today as well as an exam. And it's Systems Analysis and Design, which is one of the more important classes I've taken... so not a fan of this professor so far. /coolstorybro

Also, group projects... group projects 🤬 everywhere. 4 of my 5 classes this semester have one :grumpy:

Just sent off my university application.

I've applied too:

Bath Uni
Loughborough Uni
Surrey Uni
Warwick Uni
Portsmouth Uni

All of them to do Mechanical engineering. My predictions are A*AB however I'm probably going to finalise Warwick as my firm (AAB) and Portsmouth (Much lower entry criteria however course looks pretty good there) as my insurance.

Starting to get excited, only a years time. :D :D :D

👍 I applied to Bath and Loughborough. Both wanted Calculus, which I was taking, but it meant that I'd have to pass another exam and Leeds had accepted me unconditionally. Also, I'd rather be in Leeds. I hope your applications go well! I got a response from Coventry University pretty quickly, but I didn't hear from Leeds until January. Louhgborough sent me an e-mail fairly promptly asking about calc, so I decided to withdraw my application from there, though they had offered me an alternate way to get into my course. Bath accepted me conditionally in December, IIRC.

Got my university ID today, so I'm officially a student!

Congrats on getting in to uni. :D

May I ask though, have you done all your education in the UK? just because I have never seen anything about calculus mentioned in any entry requirements for A-levels, they just specify A Level maths.

He moved here last week I think it was. Before then I believe he lived in the USA.

Been a crap first year at Uni,pretty average grades but failed math in 2nd semester which I just had to redo a few days ago (Didn't go that well but hopefully I'll pass).

My university in fairly difficult and requires alot and I do mean alot of studying, will start the 3rd semester majoring in Mechatronics in a week hopefully I could improve upon my grades but to be honest Just want that period of my life to finish as soon as possible :(

Thanks! I've done my education up to now in America. Can you take Calculus before uni in the UK? Because if not, it means I'll get at least a refresher on all the integration and differentiation methods.

Yep, this.
I think they accept IB grades.
I don't actually have any IB qualifications, unless American Advanced Placement tests count. The UK university system seems very open to international test scores, though. I'd say that they're more open to American test scores than American universities are .

Yep, maths in the last two years is very much calculus based, from my recent experience.

So I leave for Oxford tomorrow, and I am terrified. Any advice on uni life?

Are you entering the Oxford university?

Well first and foremost I can advise you to decide roughly on which class to take , to make preps for subjects that you're going to do lessons. And if you're planning to get a room in a dormitory you ought to ponder on what to bring as commodities for living with you.

Yep. Scared that everyone else there will just be genii and I'll look a bit stupid.

I think that happens to everyone at Oxbridge, even the genii. Don't worry about it. Enjoy being at uni, but make sure to study hard.

Geniuses, you mean? Don't worry. Take the opportunity as a freshman to make as many friends as possible-- especially with the geniuses-- in all kinds of fields. Otherwise, you'll be miserable.

If you ever get intimidated, remember this: God let there be people smarter than you so that one day you could hire them.

Why do Philosophers have to be so hard to study? I have a test at 8:00 AM and It's 2:10 AM. I'm getting lost in the garbage of Peter Singer. Equality of animals.. not a bad topic but dude... So many words. :(

 To the OP for creating this thread, I only just stumbled upon it.
Just had my mid-semester break, and now it's three more weeks of learning, study and assignments before the exam period throughout November (it will be rewarding though once finished-the ps4 releases the day after the exam period is finished :D).

Only just found this thread as well 👍

For me I'm in second semester and had my mid-semester break a few weeks ago. Good timing with exams like inferno, mine are all early November so I get about 3-4 months to try the new releases :D

Uni timetable isn't too bad because I'm at a satellite campus due to main campus being a bit far away to travel to but I'm gonna have to trek it there next year. At least I'm only going to uni 3 days a week :)

In the meantime I'm trying to prepare for an ethics essay I have to write :( I don't even know how business ethics is a subject let alone having lectures for it as well

Got word back today from the university I graduated from that I cannot go back and finish a degree. I have my BS/BA but I wanted to get a certificate, a license, and finish my finance degree. They kindly told me that I cannot take those three classes, but instead have to start from scratch like I'm a freshman. I would understand that for someone who has been out of school for a very long time, but I graduated less than five years ago. That news really made me angry - I was really looking forward to going back and taking those classes. So take it from me, don't graduate until you've taken everything you think you want to take.

Well then, is there nothing more university-worthy than helping someone so drunk they can't stay awake get home while you yourself are absolutley pissed? :P

I'm guessing that Oxbridge 1st year marks don't count towards your degree, like other British unis, so use that time for socializing!

We have a High School thread for general discussion about High School, but no thread for college. This seems very odd to me since it seems like the average age of a GTP user is around 20. A LOT of us are in college.

So where are you attending? What's your major? How are your grades?

Right now I'm attending the University of Kentucky and majoring in Architecture. I commute about an hour round-trip every day, and then walk upwards of two miles just to get to all my classes. The UK basketball team is poised to win a ninth title this year :).

So, how's your college going?
