The University Thread

Just got my AS results, only one year away from Uni. :D :D

High A's in Maths and Physics (Including 99/100 in maths mechanics and 116/120 in my summer physics exam.) :D :D
Mid B in Computing (Me and my parents feel I should have got higher and that my teacher marked my coursework down unfairly, however still not a "bad" result.)
Mid B in General Studies
C in History (Dropping it so it doesn't matter.)

If I keep these grades up I can get into Warwick to do Mechanical Engineering (Which is where and what I want to do.)

Just started writing my personal statement, is there anyone here by any chance who may be happy to give it a quick read through when I have finished it so I can have more peoples opinions on it, thus meaning I can improve it more. :D

Welcome to my part of the world. I work in Leeds city centre 👍

I enjoyed my time at uni. My first year didnt count much and was more a test bed for what you really wanted to get out of the next two years. Final two years were better and the lecturers were great. I studied at De Mont Fort Uni in Leicester. Good luck and I might see you about.

Well done to you guys getting your results.

I'll be on the phone all day for Clearing. Which will be fun. 👎

I have an email from my college asking for a certificate to be sent to them as confirmation, but no emails from Uni or anything yet... :indiff:

Got that early confirmation of my placement at Exeter by text, so that was all good.

Mostly happy faces at school, not too many tears. Personally I was A*AB, with the B only 14 UMS off an A :grumpy: Though that A* in maths is excellent news :D course I end up doing my worst subject at university too  ah well ...

Hi everyone. Any chemistry students here?
I'm a third year student of the MUCTR (Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia).

In my first year of studies, Mathematic Analysis was my general pain in the ass. :D
But then I realized that it was only the beginning, and the hardest courses are coming...

Holy ****. This charcoal drawing I'm working on is terrible. My art teacher hasn't been here all week and I'm just out of it. This drawing looks like some kindergarten dyslexic kids.

Do you have a copy of your degree plan or curriculum? I'm curious about what you guys do over in Russia. I have an AA in biology and chemistry-- getting a BS in biology by Christmas time. Would only need to take analytical chemistry and physical chemistry to get a BA/BS in Chem too. The labs are a pain in the ass and I'm not terribly inclined to do all that math, so I chose Bio. Also, I wouldn't want to get a chem degree unless it was ACS approved. You can take that curriculum but it also requires that you take classes to become fluent in French, German, or Russian. Since I took Spanish, that'd take me like a whole year and a half extra for just the language classes.

Mildly ironic this thread popped up. I've been giving serious thought to finishing my finance degree. I have a BS in business administration with an emphasis in entrepreneurship, but I've always felt if I had finished my finance emphasis (to which I only needed three more classes) then potential employers would give me a more serious look. Most employers are impressed I went the entrepreneurship route, but simultaneously wondering what good am I going to be to them. In my experience finance experience and qualifications are always looked highly upon.

I'd say go for it. The more education you have the better the job outlook, at least right now

/ Does anyone have crazy times In between classes because I have a 3 hour gap before I start my class. Our sub went out so I can't drive back home. I don't want to bike because I'll sweat to death.

Yikes. I'm an RA on campus this year, just had my first meeting with the people on my floor. Don't think I've ever been in a more awkward situation in my life, outside of the two ice breakers we did, nobody seemed willing to say a word other than me. Basically was me talking to nodding heads about the rules and regulations.

Everyone seems fine though, they're all good to talk to one on one and the pairs of roommates seem to get along well, so hopefully in time once everyone gets to know eachother things will be better. Most of the people who were there today are either international students who tend to be more shy, or 1st year students leaving home for the very first time, so it's understandable that they weren't exactly the most chatty bunch.

My thoughts are a little late, my apologies.

You should absolutely do the finance emphasis if it doesn't add much time to your degree program. I feel like finance and accounting are the two business concentrations that are actually sought after, and either can open a lot of doors.

I think I've always thought about the entrepreneurship emphasis is that yes, there are certain lessons and and important information that can be learned in class, but real entrepreneurship is learned by doing, and often times learned by failure, in an unstructured setting. Being in class, and even projects where you have to go start some sort of business just doesn't seem enough.

Yup, I've had that before. Use this time to go to a library and develop good study habits. Start on homework and readings early so you know what is coming up and how difficult the assignment would be, so you have time to go to office hours if you need to later in the week.

This is what I'm doing, my original plan was an accounting major followed by professional accounting designation. Decided I may as well double major in Accounting/Finance. The fields are fairly similar, and there's a ton of overlap in the courses required for either major. Financial Accounting classes go towards both majors, as do 3rd and 4th year Finance classes. I might even be able to fit in a year abroad and still graduate in 4 years if I take enough online summer courses.

Just having a bit of a "Oh frock" moment.

I'm currently at a community college in California, looking to go into Mechanical Engineering. The catch is I'm not even taking Pre-Calculus yet, but when I get that finished up next semester, I should be able to transfer after only a single year of CC.

The problem I currently have is that it appears that all CSU campuses want you to have finished math through Calc 4A prior to transfer.

Do they actually expect me to stay at Community College for and additional 4 semesters? That's 1 semester longer than everyone else, and 3 longer than my 60 Units.

Does anyone know if you can transfer undeclared?

I would go talk to a counselor, I signed up for a meeting with the Transfer guy 2 weeks ago,and I wont get to see him until the 12th...

Ah well.

MUCTR has 100-point rating system for each course.
55-69 is the "alright" grade, 70-84 is "good", and 85-100 is "excellent".

So I've been looking over all the activities available over the 2-3 weeks after I arrive, and along with all the necessary stuff (orientations, moving in, shopping, getting a bank account, etc.), I'm realising that it's going to be a helluva two weeks. I'm going to be exhausted. And then classes start!

You also need to check if your university has given you any pre course tasks.

And things like bank accounts need to be sorted quickly as the paperwork can take a while to clear.

How do I check for pre course tasks?

The bank account shouldn't be a big problem; my dad will be here to help me with that.

Ask the uni as where they put info is different in every place.

It might be simple. Like mine has asked me to watch the channel 4 news regularly for 2 weeks.

Well let's see if I can resume my academic route.

I entered University one year later, and I started at (what it seems) the wrong degree.
My first degree (which I didn't complete) was a degree in Materials Science and Engineering by Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon Tech), one of the best and most renowned Engineering faculties of my country. The thing is, when you are at one of the best faculties, you have to expect a certain degree of demand, something I wasn't ready and didn't have the bases for. Result?: Failing miserably one the first year, but kind of got up in the second year. The thing was, I wasn't into the degree anymore, so after two years, I decided to change my degree.

Now, I'm taking a degree on Biochemistry, by the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologias, I am now in my second year and I am both loving my degree (always liked chemistry and labs) and I am really into it.

If only mine was that easy. Fat reading list to get through, there's no way anyone can read all of it in time.

I wouldn't worry about it, most reading lists are only advisory and not compulsory. If they do ask questions on it, which I doubt they will, other people will have done it and will answer.

Obviously read some books, perhaps ask your lecturer which are the most important ones. But you don't have to read everything on there.

I've been thinking about Uni recently...
Anyone who goes to/went to a Uni in Australia? After year 12 I'm looking to get into Mechanical Engineering at the local Uni (Deakin). Can anyone share anything about getting the degree or other good Uni's?

Just got finished with my philosophy exam. The teacher wanted 15 sentences for each argument. I simply did about 13 for each. I can't ramble on about stuff sadly. Its my weakness for that class.
