The Carrera GT was only made after a GT-1 race car was scrapped due tothe old GT-1 class being scrapped. Thats what killed the original TVR Speed 12 too.
 
As live4speed said, the CGT project originally was intended to be a Le Mans racer until the class was scrapped, so they decided to turn it into a road car.

The Maserati MC12 was designed to race at Le Mans, but that too, didn't pan out because of rule changes by ACO.

Well, except for the C6.R and Z06, which were developed side by side using much of the same technology.

Don't get me started on that whole C6R/Z06 thing again - the two cars share an engine block - thats it.
