The "war on police" in America

De Blasio is mayor. His desk is where the complaints find their final resting place. If tensions are rising he cannot control the citizens. He can control the police who work under him. It is not unreasonable for him to suggest they look at where changes can be made.

valid post i wish you were wrong .. all well and good as the most excellent Mayor De Blasio isnt the target of an assassination ;/ a political nightmare and i fear the cops will suffer the most of all in this

i dont know about a civil war but to say there is a divide in the country would be an understatement

would it have been better if they got the assassin in custody before he an hero'ed ? worse ?

dark times ;/

Neither. He killed officers in the name of a cause. No matter how prominent he was or wasn't in the leadership of that cause it puts the police on edge. I wouldn't be surprised if the police don't develop faster trigger fingers. Those who support police will say they are justified because of this. Those opposed will claim it has just brought to public light what everyone has known.

At this point, how this plays out will be up to law enforcement. It only takes one officer who is made paranoid by this to set off a firestorm. It isn't too late to diffuse the situation, but it is approaching the point of no return.

This.

But with the side note that it doesn't only take one officer. If another disgruntled citizen shoots a cop I can see this spiralling completely out of control.

Oh dear, before this happened then the "cause" had the moral high ground, and whilst what they are fighting against is still a valid argument acts like this devalue the message of violence not being necessary.

If what I have interpreted correct from my local news, I don't understand why he would go all the way from Georgia up to New York to do this...
There have been just as many protests down here as there has been up there.

You get a lot more press and national attention if something happens in New York than just about anywhere else in the world.

True.... but why?
I just don't understand why someone would go from, basically, pole to pole to kill cops, then to suicide. It makes no sense as why it never happened down here.

On the other hand, I am somewhat pleased it didn't actually happen down here. I'm sick of hearing/watching "__ cops killed by ___ man with ____ (assault rifle mostly... illegal always)" every frickin day.... let alone, assault rifle is thrown around down here like this:
Journalists+Guide+to+Firearms+Identification1361654850.jpg
Everything is an assault rifle or the other one, everything is a Glock... Gets annoying when every time someone tweets them the actual gun and they have to correct themselves.. anyways.
Just the last week we had I think the worst attack/ambush on officers recorded.
I also read a stat yesterday, that the amount of cops killed so far this year is below average (by four I think) but those ambushed (12) is up 3x the normal amount, that's nationwide too.

People are ridiculous. I think the jar of people is full and the dumb/mentally insane (not ill, having Alzheimers is ill but killing cops is insane) have found the way out first and one by one are killing themselves along with helpless others too...

Live leak has a video, they claim was taken from his Facebook feed before it was deactivated, that supposedly shows him being forced into an illegal search of his bag a year ago after a drug sniffing dog reacted to it, despite nothing being found in the search. He argues with the officer and then the officer forces him to stop filming. Watching it, at least one rights violations clearly takes place. Questions have been raised if the incident, assuming the video is authentic, played a role in raising his anger.

Embedded media from this media site is no longer available

I'd be mad too, if this is real which it seems to be...then one he was profiled most likely, and then claimed that some how this authority is a mobile private operations facility that when they claim so can have you stop filming in a public facility cause they're doing the investigation...

However, that's all I would be is mad and finding a better solution to deal with what lack of respect my rights as a citizen were just abused. And that's not counting the bully tactic of one guy stands and waits a bit suspiciously (most likely to make sure he didn't leave the bus), while the super dog guru comes back with the bogus probable cause. And it becomes apparent when he tries to cut off the non-hostile as he questions the "officer" that they were searching because of other reason than the actual dog.

But that's how I'm calling it some may agree others may not.

I don't know if it means anything. He could have already been anti cop when this happened, which just reinforced his view. This might have been what go him into the anti cop mindset. Either way, it needs to be understood, particularly by police, that this one man does not represent the protesters or their cause. The fact that he has a history of filming police interaction makes him look like any other member of PINAC, Cop Watch, Cop Block, etc.

He probably was to an extent, and this just maybe pushed him over or rather started it, in any capacity it didn't help or achieve anything other than anger an individual. Which doesn't excuse what was done and what others may do because of it on either side of the argument, but perhaps a more analyzed approach is needed on many aspects of this.

I would say that he was already suspicious of police prior to this filming hence his filming, but then again we don't know if he actually knew he was going to be filmed, he could have just had the camcorder to film his trip or whatever it was that day and they just happened to get filmed.

Legitimate question. Does a sniffing dog give legal probable cause for a search? When is it legal for the cops to allow the dog to sniff?

Let's also keep in mind that drug dogs can also "give" false positives if the officer that has the dog trained him to give it on command. A drug dog in New Mexico called "Leo" has given a New Mexico town at least two lawsuits from illegal searches based on evidence provided from that dog. [I can also recall a third search conducted in a similar manner to the other two]. All charges that resulted from the searches were ultimately thrown out.

An autopsy report on Ezell Ford - who was shot by Los Angeles police in August - reveals that he was shot at close range in the back:

http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2014-...man-ezell-ford-in-back-autopsy-report/5993168
According to what I read, the autopsy is consistent with what the officers involved said happened. That Ford tried to grab the officer's weapon in a struggle, was on top of the officer and gaining control of his primary weapon, the officer withdrew his backup pistol and shot him in the back at point blank range.

If I recall correctly the LAPD is in a scumbag class of their own.
You're going to condemn thousands of police officers for the actions of a few that you read about on the internet?

You have admit, they have a bit of a PR issue. They have paid out millions to victims of their actions this year.

No. I prefer not to pull things out of my ass when discussing things.

I remember watching a documentary about the US police and it became painfully obvious that the LAPD have a very poor reputation compared to the rest of the US.

We have that same issue here. The police in The Hague have the same poor status. Where as the police corps of Het Gooi (my region) are viewed as the sissies/laughing stock of the police.

Ahh, so you saw a "documentary" and so it's ok to condemn thousands of police officers because of the actions of a few. Of course because it's a "documentary" it couldn't possibly be biased or have a hidden agenda, I'm sure it was put together purely for empirical research on the LAPD and not to capitalize on whatever was the hot topic of the day.

Would it be a smart idea to retitle this thread to "War On Cops"? Two officers of the Durham PD in Durham, NC were shot at since Christmas to try to replicate the New York cop executions. One officer fought them off with his service pistol, the other got away with just a broken sliding door.

If you don't believe that a war is coming on our law enforcement, your wrong.

While, rationally speaking, this is a victory for society (let's face it, this guy was unstable as hell), the dumb and irrational crowd will yet again find a way to claim this to be the cops' fault, only further escalating the problem.
Because of past "mistakes" (the quotation marks are my way of saying I am trying to NOT take a side), people feel as if the police won't protect them. I sort of liken the police force to bees. They won't sting you if you do not anger them (follow the law).

The Ferguson police chief has stood down following a report into the shooting of Michael Brown and the police department's response to it.

Reports are emerging that two people - possibly police - have been shot during a protest outside the police department.

I can confirm that it was two Ferguson police officers that were shot outside the police department building. One was shot in the face just below the right eye, and the bullet is still lodged at his ear. I have no idea where the other officer was shot. Both are expected to survive their injuries, thank God.

Not sure how I missed this thread.

I have to say that I already don't trust the NYPD. For quite some time now they have taken a break from pursuing many crimes. In theory, this should allow them to focus on more important aspects of police work. But when I was there in October, they couldn't even manage to put my crash report into the system which was effectively a hit-and-run because the guy who hit me ran away. If they can't even do a simple task like that then what the hell use are they? Why would I trust them with my life or anything like that? Not only did it take them nearly an hour to show up, they botched the job anyway. Complete waste of time.
