Australia's in middle of a terrible drought, isn't it?
Is it pretty rare to have those restrictions? We just had them two years (or was it three...?) ago when there was a serious drought and forest fires were rampant.
The restrictions suck, really. Big businesses and golf courses still waste lots of water, if what I've seen is correct in Australia.
It just has big knock on effects. Farmers are losing everything, a couple of weeks ago they were saying how many farmer suicides their have been this year. Crops just can't be grown, which in turn bumps the prices up higher, then it causes more farmers to struggle just to feed their families. In addiction, the everything here is so dry, that fires just go on forever. This fires which I posted about on the 9th of December are still burning. And have burnt down 800,000 hectares of forest and houses. It even made the headlines in the international section of the Japanese news. It said something about how Australia had to lower their GDP projection, due to the severeness of the drought.
I can't even remember the last time it snowed around Christmas. It's confirmed, that there will be no snow at all before or even after christmas here....This will be the first christmas in all my life without snow. Last year at this time in Ontario Canada, we were digging our cars out of the snow. Its too awkward.
Yup. I can hardly remember the last time it rained properly. We had a few drops last week, but not a proper shower.
Where I live, Melbourne (Bottom right of the mainland), is introducing Stage 3 Water Restrictions on the 1st of January. Which are:
*Even numbered houses can water on Saturday and Tuesday; odd numbered can water on Sunday and Wednesday.
- Lawns cannot be watered by residents, businesses and local councils. There are some exempt playing surfaces that can be watered. (Pretty much all the lawn around here is completely dead already)
- Manual dripper systems can be used between 6am - 8am and 8pm - 10pm*.
- Automatic dripper systems can be used between midnight - 4am*.
- Hand-held hoses fitted with a trigger nozzle can be used between 6am–8am and 8pm-10pm to water gardens.*
- Vehicle washing. Hand-held hoses or high pressure cleaning devices cannot be used for vehicle washing, at any time. A bucket filled from a tap can be used to clean windows, mirrors and lights; and spot-remove corrosive substances. A commercial car wash can be used. (My car is so dirty, I haven't washed it in about 2 months)
On the what is the weather like today, well, It's not raining. And it's about 36C.
To be honest with you, these fires are a waste of time to be fighting seriously; as soon as you've spent days and days on end coming out on top with one front, another one just as large will start somewhere else. We might as well just let Australia burn and have it all done over with. (I'm sick of this smoke...)
