yes it is, we had a light shower for a second earlier, but not enough to wet the ground, the clouds look dark to the west

Australia's in middle of a terrible drought, isn't it?

Yup. I can hardly remember the last time it rained properly. We had a few drops last week, but not a proper shower.

Where I live, Melbourne (Bottom right of the mainland), is introducing Stage 3 Water Restrictions on the 1st of January. Which are:

  • Lawns cannot be watered by residents, businesses and local councils. There are some exempt playing surfaces that can be watered. (Pretty much all the lawn around here is completely dead already)
  • Manual dripper systems can be used between 6am - 8am and 8pm - 10pm*.
  • Automatic dripper systems can be used between midnight - 4am*.
  • Hand-held hoses fitted with a trigger nozzle can be used between 6am–8am and 8pm-10pm to water gardens.*
  • Vehicle washing. Hand-held hoses or high pressure cleaning devices cannot be used for vehicle washing, at any time. A bucket filled from a tap can be used to clean windows, mirrors and lights; and spot-remove corrosive substances. A commercial car wash can be used. (My car is so dirty, I haven't washed it in about 2 months)
*Even numbered houses can water on Saturday and Tuesday; odd numbered can water on Sunday and Wednesday.

On the what is the weather like today, well, It's not raining. And it's about 36C.

Is it pretty rare to have those restrictions? We just had them two years (or was it three...?) ago when there was a serious drought and forest fires were rampant. Reservoirs drained down to their last 10% before we got rain. On that year, in the end we were not allowed to sprinkle lawns anymore, at all.

The restrictions suck, really. Big businesses and golf courses still waste lots of water, if what I've seen is correct in Australia.

It even made the headlines in the international section of the Japanese news. It said something about how Australia had to lower their GDP projection, due to the severeness of the drought.

We've been at least on Stage 1 restrictions for years, possibly late 90s, Stage 2 came in a couple of years ago. It's only Stage 3 in metropolitan Melbourne though as well. I was down at Phillip Island a couple of weeks ago (Where the MotoGP and V8s are held), and they're on level 4 restrictions, where basically you can't use water outside at all, because the dam capacity was down to 11% or something.

Down here at least they've got pretty tight. Golf Courses are only allowed to water greens as far as I'm aware. Most sporting grounds aren't allowed, I've heard they're already canceling next years football season in some areas because the grounds are just too hard and can't legally be used. My brothers league is talking about doing the same also.

It just has big knock on effects. Farmers are losing everything, a couple of weeks ago they were saying how many farmer suicides their have been this year. Crops just can't be grown, which in turn bumps the prices up higher, then it causes more farmers to struggle just to feed their families. In addiction, the everything here is so dry, that fires just go on forever. This fires which I posted about on the 9th of December are still burning. And have burnt down 800,000 hectares of forest and houses.

Okay then, at least you guys manage the water better than us. But when I talk "restrictions" its only for the summer beginning June ending September. Outside of that period, you can water as much as you like. (Not that you'd want to give more water to an already-watered lawn from rain, anyway.) We have never had restrictions going on for years.

It's confirmed, that there will be no snow at all before or even after christmas here....This will be the first christmas in all my life without snow. Last year at this time in Ontario Canada, we were digging our cars out of the snow. Its too awkward.

We here in Colorado are in the middle of a blizzard! 16" on the ground already and another 10" to go by morning. I plan on posting some great pictures when its all done.

I can't even remember the last time it snowed around Christmas.

here's the Yorke Penuinsula:

half of it's in the Summer, but still, it's very dry

some silly people were watering a golf course in 35+ heat C yesterday

Yep, and with us guys in Melbourne soon recieving stage 3 restrictions, it's a good thing we have a permit for our pool early enough. I couldn't imagine not being able to use my pool, having just one massive hole in my backyard and staring into nothingness. (Though, skating it could prove dangerously fun)

To be honest with you, these fires are a waste of time to be fighting seriously; as soon as you've spent days and days on end coming out on top with one front, another one just as large will start somewhere else. We might as well just let Australia burn and have it all done over with. (I'm sick of this smoke...)

They are trying to save peoples homes, I bet if your home was in the path you wouldn't feel like that.

Again, where in for some nasty, unheatly (air polution) winter weather today but luckly not too cold though.

completely off topic: I just found out if you click on the amount of replies in the GTP forum thing, you can see how many replies you've entered in that particularly thread, hehe.

Let alone what green grass feels like under your feet, or rather the taste of something non-frozen. (Damn it's hot...)

According the the Bureau of Meteorology. It got to 37.4 today
(and remember that's shade temperature,in the sun it's about 10C hotter, that's why they were saying it read 53C in the middle of the ground in Perth last week during the test.).

Which isn't that bad. The bad thing is that it's almost 10pm and it's still 33C.

Just curious, which part of Melbourne are you from?
