They really didn't have a choice.
Exactly. They wanted to stick it to their own customer base, but only after it became possible that Xbox One could end up as the next big flop, they back off by patting themselves on the back "oh, yeah. it's about our customers, we listen to your input & stuff...".

Don't get me wrong, I am glad for the Xbox gamers, but petty person like me, I'd buy Playstation out of spite.

Someone disagrees with MS latest stance :

the-xbox-one-just-got-way-worse-and-its-our-fault

I get the point he's making, but he also seems to have a lot of faith in corporations. I've observed cost/price control by another beloved American corporation, and they are out to bend over their most loyal of their customers at every turn.

This guy is pretty much claiming that Microsoft is looking to make gaming cheaper, and its DRM policy would have saved money for the gamers. Big claim to make without any proof. I'm not saying he's wrong, but it was starting to sound like a campaign speech by a politician.

I am skeptical about getting cheaper games part, from MS track record, I don't think that would ever happen and publishers won't reduce price easily - they want to maximize profits not limiting it.

Games are still being offered through the cloud though. You can choose to buy a disk and install your game, or buy your game through the marketplace. This was one of the best features and it seems with recent news that Microsoft has moved more towards a "PC in a console" type of deal. Install the game and reduce loading times, or download the console day of the release and not leave your house.

I'm hoping they'll take advantage of background downloading. Say you pre-order a game and pay for the full price on the marketplace. It downloads the game for you in the background a day or so prior to release so that it can be ready right when the game launches. This would be a great feature.

Probably not much of difference for multi platform titles, developers would want to give streamlined experience to all gamers on both consoles. We may see texture quality, view distance, lighting, visual effects differences, maybe anti aliasing as well - both consoles will aim for 1080p 60fps, unless a title like BF4, if the dev wanted more graphic fidelity or one of the console is struggling, maybe 30 fps could happen or sub 1080p, who knows.

In a few years, the PS4 games will begin to shine based on that IGN story. I also see the the PS4 multiplatform games being held back when developers want to use over GB of RAM.

Indeed sir. GT7, Uncharted 4, etc., running with 6-7 GB of RAM will be a site to behold.

If GT6 can do great with low RAM, I can't imagine 7 GB of epicness, PD's magic in graphic engine with the latest features - tesselation, real time reflection, would bring tears to my eyes

Yeah, I would have imagined that if price decreases on games were part of the strategy, that would have been one of the first things to publicise. "Here, we have this DRM that's kind of a pain, but it'll let us bring you games much cheaper!"

People would have understood and maybe gone along with that. Even had they announced that now, it might have flown. $500 Xbone with $40 games versus $400 PS4 with $60 games? Seems sort of interesting if you're the sort of person that buys more than half a dozen games per gen.

People will put up with a lot of crap for the right price. MS can monitor me all they like if the games are gonna be $5 (although I reserve the right to put a blanket over my Kinect and put chewing gum in the microphone :P).

Instead they rescind the whole policy, which makes me think that price decreases were never an option.

No matter the policy. Its what they set out to do in the first place that pushed everyone away, now there panicking about it. They copied ps3 with the xbox slim with integrating wifi, bigger memory, black gloss, added features..... Now they've adjusted there policy to similar style as sony. All in all, Sony is a good business after all ps3 has now taken the lead of last gen, just like they said, 10 year plan (sorry but new 360 super slim is again copying sony). As a whole, sony aim it at the gamer market, as they sell pcs, laptops, tablets, phones, tvs, blu ray players, surround sound etc. so its a focused unit which is why they'll still excel. Xbox1 will just drain more power for jobs it isn't being used for. Not a fanboy but looking at the big picture. Nintendo just watch in the wings while they have fun making wonga........

Integrating WiFi, a bigger hard drive, painting it black and "adding features" is copying? Seriously? In that case the PS3 copied the original Xbox.

I liked the idea of game sharing

Thing is with game sharing, its one person at a time so cant play with anyone or access it while another person is hogging it. Ok for indie style games and small platform games but FPS'/sports/racing/RPG take time to complete.

Well in a way, xbox then copied psone. But it was the evolutionary version of the xbox360 that copied the original ps3. Given that the designs are similar does seem odd for a Mk1 but xbox are playing catch up again.

Someone at microsoft labeled de PS4 - PS3.5 because it was the same concept and just an upgrade... and the XBone was a totally new concept. Now its not so new anymore therefore the joke... maybe that was the intention of Monatsende

Someone got me right!

As far as I'm concerned, each console should only be an upgrade. Upgrade hardware, update software, and add new features. When you make a totally new product then you lose sight of what makes your product individual.

PS4 is better for people who want strictly gaming. It's more powerful and doesn't require you to install the game, leaving more space on the hard drive for DLC and game saves. Xbox is better for people who primarily game, but also spend much of their time doing all these entertainment options on the side.

I'm in a bit of a pickle. My friends are most likely all getting the One, but I have little use for all those features. I don't have a good enough Internet to stream an HD movie or TV show. Or download a lot of my games. This can really hurt people in the end.

Well in a way, xbox then copied psone. .

The PSone didn't have a hard drive at all or integrated wifi (neither did the original xbox, for that matter) nor was it black. The PSone also didn't have network connectivity or HDMI out or a disc feed mechanism. It also was quite small.

They're black plastic boxes, it's hardly copying to make them smaller, better and more efficient over time just as it's not copying to include built in ethernet or hard drives (Which with your definition of copying Sony did).

The PS3 was totally copying the Saturn, though.

Hard to program for, horrible marketing in the first year that completely destroyed all of the goodwill the company built up, theoretically more powerful but only because of the obnoxious way that it was designed, black exterior, lots of multimedia functionality, outrageously expensive compared to the competition, was much better to play fighting games on, etc.
