Thrustmaster TH8A Shifter Thread

Which mode do you mostly use with your TH8A?

I think someone makes an adapter to use a TH8 shifter with a G27, but not sure who it is. Maybe someone else will let you know who makes it.

thanks for the reply... any idea what can i get as a sequential shifter for the G29 on PS4? basically i just wana use it as a handbrake...
thanks again!

With the G27 people used to do basic mods to the shifters to achieve that. - you would have to buy the G29 shifter and try it. .. otherwise there might be some conversion kits I believe.

Does anyone have any tips for how to get the most out of this shifter ie how to use it in general?

I find I keep putting it into the wrong gears as there's no resistance stopping you like there is in a real car. Particularly in the middle between gears 3 & 6 I'm all over the place at times.

I take it that is supposed to be consistently loose between gears & that it can't dynamically change?

I've just bought the t3pa pedals as well but find I'm not using the clutch as 1. I seemingly don't need to in order to change gears 2. I'm used to using the basic brake/accelerate pedals that came with my T300Rs 3. The time it takes to bother with it ie I'd have been as well leaving my left foot hovering over the brake with my right on the gas.

Ive been mainly playing project cars & driveclub using a next level wheel stand. Cheers guys.

If you are really having trouble with wrong gates (e.g. 5th/6th when you want 3rd/4th) there are two options:
1. Practice more
2. Mod the shifter, either by adding a plate without 7th gear or by using plastic stoppers to make the gates feel differently or by adjusting the gates for instance to make 5th/7th gates both give you 5th gear, using the shifter calibration software which you can download from Thrustmaster.

Personally I'd suggest you practice more. 3rd gear is never about forcing the shifter, you just cup it out of 2nd back into neutral then apply force straight forward into 3rd. Once you get your head around that, it all becomes easier.

As for using the clutch: most cars in Driveclub are modern supercars and don't even have a clutch pedal. In pCARS you need the clutch for the slower road cars and older race cars, and also when the car is stationary for modern racecars (hold clutch off the line, put it into first with paddles or shifter, then shift without clutch afterwards).

There are also some interesting hybrids, for instance the Ginetta junior can downshift without clutch but you must clutch the up shifts. Well, as long as you don't have auto clutch enabled :)

Most of the fun of using the shifter and clutch is that it is harder, you will be slower until you get to grips with it. Just set everything to fully manual H box and enjoy the experience.

And everything else you said great advice & thanks a lot. I just found I was much better with sequential & it still gave me an enhanced driving an actual car feel but wanted to get the most out of it rather than going for the easier option.

I'll persist with it & try changing the settings on project cars. Had a feeling that might have been a good shout. Hopefully I'll soon start actually using the criminaly neglected clutch!

There is also an adjustment screw that will tighten it a little. I set mine as tight as I could without it feeling like it was scraping.

Also a shorter shifter shaft makes it much more natural in my opinion- there is a guy on here Seth Francis who makes nice ones or you can make one yourself. You could do a basic addition for the stock one like I first did. They are vacuum caps, just makes it a little harder to put into 7th and reverse.

Here is with the vacuum caps.

Here is my $17 DIY short shifter kit. - if you want to try and make one info is in my blog found in my signature.

There is also an adjustment screw that will tighten it a little. I set mine as tight as I could without it feeling like it was scraping.

Be careful about doing that though. I made the mistake of making it too tight and scraped off all the grease. I had to take it apart and regrease everything. When I reassembled it I didn't tighten it as much and it's been fine for quite a while now.

But once you get to grips with it, using the clutch is faster. The game programs auto-clutch shifts on the slow side. In PCARS, on cars that actually require a clutch, I consistently lap about a second faster on Spa when using manual clutch vs auto clutch.

Hi guys, just a quick question:

In all the games that I've tried with the TH8A (PCars, SLRE, The Crew), even with manual clutch on, I'm still able to change gear by just lifting the throttle and engaging a gear - it's the same when downshifting as well.
Is this supposed to happen?!
Thanks

That doesn't work for me in PCARS or The Crew. In PCARS you are meant to be able to do that with certain cars, but certainly not every manual transmission car.

Yeah, even the old Zakspeed Capri was doing it? Surely that isn't right?!

So for sure something is up?! Is there anything that I may have done accidentally to cause this?

You said that the same happens in several games, so I would imagine it's some hardware issue. But I have no idea what it would be. Are you on PC or PS4?

PS4. I guess it's a hardware issue, will probably email TM and get their take. Thanks for the help anyways!

Thrustmaster TH8 Sequential Knob
Added to original post (OP).

Summary: 100% metal, screws directly onto the TH8A and TH8RS shifters and optimized for sequential mode.
Size: 11 cm/4.3” tall; 4 cm/1.6” in diameter
Weighs: 0.5 lb/220 g
Cost: £24.99

Not cheap for a shifter knob when there are heaps of aftermarket options available online. Quality might be much better than similarly priced aftermarket options, however this screws straight into the shifter rod.

Ideally should be bundled with as part of the package in the future without having to buy this separately. Currently available in the UK store.

I already have similar style knob so I won't be getting one. But if you do, please let us know.

PS: If anyone have any other mods that I haven't listed under OP please let me know.

Hey Guys,

I just bought a T300 to replace my g27 so the thing is when I had the g27 I bought a wheelstand pro v2. I found out the t300 also fits nicely on that one but now my question I also got the mount for the g27 shifter. Does anyone know if the thrustamster shifters also fit to the same mount or should i see if i can order a different one. Any help is greatly appreciated!

The TH8 shifters can either bolt down or clamp down. The clamp is nice and strong. I made my add on shifter mount for my wheel stand pro and was going to bolt it on but the clamp is so strong I never bothered. You should have no issues.

Also the TH8a is an awesome kit.. it is not perfect but easy to mod for short shift if you want and feels great.

The official WSP v2 deluxe version for Thrustmaster wheels comes with a shifter mount for the TH8A which has proper screw holes and fits nicely, although I agree with @Spitfire77 that you could clamp it to any flat piece of metal/wood and it will stay put... Excellent clamp.

The TH8A blows away the G27 shifter comprehensively, I love mine.

WheelStandPro also has this available for pre-order: http://www.wheelstandpro.us/rgs-module-realistic-gear-shifter-kit/

I couldn't stand the position of the shifter using the standard mount that comes with the stand when I used mine.
Yeah I hated how far forward and high it was. I added a cheap extension to mine. Just some scrap angled aluminum.
The old mount from the G27 wheel stand pro is closer to this position so he should be fine.

Thanks a lot guys! I know enough.

finally ordered the add on TH8A shifter and T3PA pedals. Installed it and now ready for testing. Thanks for all the usefull information on this forum (at least most of the info ;) )

Anyone here who knows if I get 2 TH8A and use one as SEQ shifter and one as H-pattern, can I just switch tha cable between them in the game or do I need to choose one shifter before entering the game? Another question is It possible to have both connected at the same time and just choose which one I use?

On PC you could run three TH8A shifters all connecting to USB at the same time: One for H-pattern, one for sequential and one in handbrake mode. Almost all games would support that many peripherals, you just bind each specific shifter action to a specific function in game.

On console I think the limit is one TH8A, but you could obviously buy two and swap USB cables between sequential and H-pattern. That shouldn't be a problem.

Great! I was thinking of getting a usb hub and have both connected and just remove the cable from the one I dont use, should work?
