I've been interested in some more stats on the time trial results for a while, so spent an hour at work today finding a way to get the results without encountering issues caused by multiple people having similar nicknames.

In the 15 time trials completed so far 432 345 unique PSN IDs have completed a time trial. (+ a handful that are now deleted or banned)

Out of those, only 246 unique IDs have golded all 15, so if you're one of those, congrats. There is one duplicate nickname in those 246, so could be one player with two accounts, or just a coincidence.

Out of those, the player with the lowest average finishing position has a dr-sr of E-B.....
His nickname is E. Johansson, and appears to be a Swedish real life racing driver, so he clearly sees no need to race in GT7 daily races. Either that or he has an alt account that lets him get out his aggression by ramming people anonymously after a tough real life race. His average finishing position is 51.87, with the best being 10 at Lago Maggiore with the nissan z, and the worst 143 at dragon trail seaside in gr.4.

He is quite a few average positions ahead of 2nd on the list, N. Romero with 88.67, and 3rd jack Garcia with 191.20.

Honorable mention to VQS_drifter who has an average position of 16.91 after participating in 11 trials, and to V. Vendetta, L.Pobric and doodle for having won two time trials each.

Like everything in GT7, time trials feel underutilised. Pd could easily make some stats like these available in game, and a lot of people would probably be motivated to drive more and push their times to get name recognition and clout.

Coolt stat!:D
Didn't realize I was first, but I guess that is because a lot of people (aliens) skip rounds they don't like or just gold it and call it a day...

How are you all finding the new TT challenge with the Cayman on Nurburgring GP?

For me it's probably my least favourite and most frustrating, there's just no grip. Why Sports Hard tyres? Can't make any settings changes and wondering if anyone can share any wisdom.

Anyone know if they plan to release more challenges/races concurrently? The selection is super limited. I love the time trials generally so getting a naff one is disappointing, though I suppose, some will love it.

I guess I just didn't notice before, but as more people do this challenge, does it become harder to get a faster time? I am sure yesterday a Silver was in the 2:18 range - I got a 2:18:1xx earlier thinking I'd managed a silver, only to then see it was now in the 2:16 - I presume that's becuase some other folks got faster and that time was now the minimum to be within the 5%, right?

The medal requirements are for being within a certain % of the top time, so as that time lowers, so do the requirements.

As for the TT itself, I found it pretty easy. Set a 2:12.9 after about 3 or 4 laps and that'll easily see me through the next 2 weeks. Road cars are generally my thing, so I'm used to the low grip they put out.

Main thing with Nurb GP is that track limits are just a suggestion. Run super wide on the last corner of sector 1 to carry more speed, and turn in early on the chicane so you can just fly over it. Easily a couple seconds in nothing but abusing those corners properly.

Crikey. That's a cracking time. I'll have to do some sight laps then to get a feel for the limits.

And just to check that's bog standard, no mods at all? I tried a few tweaks but I saw they were all removed so I guess so.

Yeah, completely standard - in most of these events any changes to your car are restored to default, and any aero/body pieces have no effect.

^^^^ All bow down to your time trial overlord ^^^^^

Think an arguement can be made that you're one of the aliens given that your consistency and pace is second to none in the time trials by quite some margin.

How much time do you normally spend on a time trial? And do you do daily races/gtws on another account at all?

Your post also reminded me to look into the aliens specifically.

There's 39 S rated drivers in the list of participants. I know some of the world series drivers haven't been given an S rating yet, but of the ones that do have one 5 have done all 15 time trials, 5 have done 14 of them, and then it gradually declines down to the couple that have only done 1 (on their main account anyway).

Interestingly, for anyone that feels bad about not golding all of them, there are 8 cases of s rated drivers getting silvers (2 at Suzuka MP4/4, 2 at nordschleife, 3 at Watkins glen Corvette c7, and 1 at nurburgring go gr.3). Although it's probably fair to assume it's just due to lack of effort, and not lack of pace for those guys, some of the TTs really required some effort to get gold even for the best players.

I gave it a couple of more laps to try to improve my 2:13.7, but no luck, I had a great lap that was 2:13.2 but got a penalty in the chicane. Even worse - I really messed up the chicane, if I went through it well, I wouldve saved at least those 2 tenths and wouldnt get a penalty, so my first prediction of the "ideal" 2:12.9xx lap were correct, I just need the spare time to try harder.

What baffles me - I watched couple of alien replays - I literally take the same racing line, I have the same braking points, I have the same throttle input, I have the same gear for each corner, on replay, if you hide the time, they look the same. But somehow I am 3 seconds slower...

Heh, well thank you

So, I usually go out pretty late.
I tend to start doing a few laps om tuesday, figure out what car I want to use, or fgure out a setup if that is allowed, and see what time I get, or think I can get. Then I watch the top guys how they drive to see where I can improve. then do a few more laps until I feel confident in the car/track, and set a goal time I want to reach. Then I go for it on wednesday. Thing is, I more often than not find more time in the process, so my final time is usually faster than the target time I set for myself on tuesday.
All in all I'd say about 5 hours of testing, watching replays, and grinding for each TT. Sometimes more, sometimes less. :P

If you're looking for more stats regarding the general playerbase's performance in the TT's, I know @NAXEHT has a pretty neat spreadsheet for that. :)

Damn I wish I'd had more time and motivation for the NSX at Nurburgring. I'd be joining that list!

You and 164 other people in that boat.

411 people have gold in all the 14 other events.

Yeah that's what I always think about too. Laps can look so clean but be way off pace.

Makes sense when you do the maths though. The track is 5148m long. For a 2:11 lap that's an average speed of 141.5km/h. For a 2:14 lap it's 138.3km/h. Hard to notice the difference to be honest if it's evenly spread throughout the lap.

Alternatively, you could still be averaging 141.5km/h but he slightly off the perfect line, say accumulating to you driving about 1% or 50m longer, and that'll cost you about 1.2 seconds.

In reality it's usually a combination of minor things which makes it even more difficult to understand. Shame there's no proper telemetry in the game to accurately identify where time is lost.

I used to compare my lap to aliens laps and I was using video editing software to lay over one replay over another replay to see exact difference. Maybe if you are interested you can try to do that to see exactly where you can improve or where you are losing milliseconds. And I agree with you, it's incredibly small difference in braking or acceleration that "looks exactly the same" but at the end of lap means a second or even two.

2'13.524

It's probably good enough. I don't think anyone would be doing a 2'09.634. I thought this car was kind of a chore to drive. I have a Cayman GT4 that I tuned on Sport Softs, and it's one of my favorite road cars in the game. But this one on the Sport Hards and BoP I think drives like ass.

I just started doing the Time Trials. I just started playing the game in November, and I was busy doing single player stuff and didn't pay attention to the time trials. When I finally finished most of the game, the time trial was the NSX Nurburgring one and I had no interest in doing that. Got an easy gold on the Gr.4 Sardegna though.

Once again, I have no problem whatsoever with the car. The Cayman is very well balanced, and sports hards are the tires I use by far the most in the game (because of Tokyo grind). I'm not a huge fan of Nurnburgring GP, even if I do know it rather well as a Nordschleife enthusiast. Those super long mid speed corners are clearly made for high downforce cars, and you kinda do get bored with the Cayman in the middle of them. As in, you get the urgency to 'drive more' rather than just wait for the tires to do their thing.

I am only just on a gold time after two short sessions, and I do have a problem with track limits here. Especially the chicane. If there is a pole in a chicane, how on earth is it not a track limit violation to bulldoze all over it? I really try to stay out of that kind of pushing the limits, but it might prove tricky to find the extra time elsewhere if I take the chicane cleanly. I really don't like the concept of a race for who makes the most mockery out of driving on a specific track.

TLDR: car good, tires fine, track selection and track limits on it bad.

This TT sucks. Cayman on SH handles like a whale. I don't get it. How is this supposed to be fun? Keiichi doesn't get it either and switches to softer tires.

Keiichi is also on a 6 year old game with completely different physics and handling, so it's not really very relevant.

I don't think the car handles that badly. You're whipping around a road car on non-racing tyres. It's not meant to handle like a race car, and neither should it. Road cars take a different skill set to drive properly fast in.

Not to mention it's a Porsche, which understeers unless you get some slip angle.
