Snortin Norton That nor fair man. You aren´t playing by the same rules :)
Nice tuned body :):):) and wonderfull detail on the "bumpers".

Hehe, thanks. I was thinking of watermarking them with something instead, because the floral patern near the left (her right...bumper) on the bottom strip was getting kind of hard to see in the contrast setting I had...

Snortin: Add detail to the eyes. She looks freaky without them! Looking good though!

Well I was thinking of it, but every attempt I made, it made her look slightly stranger (ie. cat, alien, etc.). I still need to work on some of the oval stuff and shiny circles, it'll get better though.

Yeah i agree Nice work Norton. A few jagged edges on the body; were you using the lasso tool without anti-aliasing selected?

Well I was, but in my room I'm surrounded by "The Twins" posters, from GTA: VC, and they're kind of sharply angled, some parts aren't smooth and fluid. I guess I kind of mimicked the style. But yes, it was AA'd.

Although, I've noticed that "filling" and paint bucketing yeild drastically different results. :scared:

Still need to work on headlights...ergh.

Same here. Except I turn it into "make selection out of path", and then I fill.

Oh my god! Next car: Z4.

Too good to attempt, or too good to not to?

She may end up like Eleanore...

How do you get the hair so uniform?

It was pretty easy to be honest. I started with the everything that i wanted to toon as a coloured object; this is my base. The base had a rough shape of how the hair would look. I then added a layer over the base which i used for drawing in the darker hair (was was most of it). This dark layer also contained the hair that falls over his face. Then on the same dark layer i drew thin strands with the pen tool; pretty much just 2 anchor points with a slight curve between then. Then on another layer above the dark layer i used the same dark colour but set the layer to 50% opacity and drew the really thin strands that went both out of the top of his head and over his face. Then on one last layer i drew a few strands of lighter hair. Then later in the production i coloured in the base layer around his head with the colour i wanted it (using ctrl + U).

Hope that's understandable!

Yeah if you read "The Colouring Stage" of my Vector Tutorial V2 i cover exactly that. If you use a selection instead of a path you do get better results with the brush than the bucket.

I hope you mean that in a good way :P

Wipped this up tonight:

I still need to work on headlights, although I think these are quite better.

What's the difference between cell-shading and vectoring?

I know one's for video or animated things, but isn't the technique similar?

The technique is similar if you use the pen tool for the cell-shading, but you can only scale vectors to different sizes without loss of quality; it is all based on paths. In Photoshop you generally only use paths to make the shape and then delete the path afterwards, but if you use the pen tool option to retain the paths you can create vector images in Photoshop. I'd look it up on wiki or something if i was you! :P

Here's the final:

Now, before you say anything, I'd like to mention a couple things:

First, I happen to know a couple of little eye tricks. One is that if something is asymmetrical, it grabs your attention. This is probably the reason ugly people are always stared at, and why advertisements are always to the side of something. It causes a subtle disturbance, basically. (Latest Murcielago employs this with some scoops, vents, etc)

Second, I've purposely lightened and darkened a few select areas that are contrary to the dominating shadows/light sources, to further make it stand out and add a little more contrast to the image. It just looks neat.

Hope you enjoy! I might start the Z4 soon...

Front wheel ;)

Everything you've said in the last 4 pages has been spoken with all-knowing authority, yet I've corrected or bested you since, and haven't seen you contribute anything.

So why should I head this "Front wheel" criticism from someone who doesn't hold the same clout as db?

Because that was a visual error that anyone can see. I don't have to have a gallery as huge as Donbenni's to see such a basic mistake like that; or to provide some constructive criticism. If you can't handle people trying to help you progress your work, you shouldn't be posting up anything.

agreed with GT, im far from an expert at doing this kind of artwork, its not my thing but i enjoy looking at it and giving some help to the very talllented artists, i happpen to like your style its very toony looking and thats cool but just look at the front wheel, the body is digging into the tire. Dont be mad for someone pointing out such a glaring mistake.

Except the thing is, you didn't provide constructive criticism, merely criticism.

Plus, from the angle of view, that IS how the body work clings over the wheel. The wheel is at a slight angle, and so is the shot; in the original non-vectored image it's just like that.

The vectoring process merely emphasised or exagerated it a bit. I could pull it away but it would look even stranger, so I kept it. I just didn't think it would have caused so much hoopla.

I guess all we have to blame is the photographer for not being so skilled at taking pictures of moving vehicles.

Guys, guys.

GTRacer is correct, the front wheel looks wrong and i also agree that you don't have to be me to post criticism in this thread, it's open to everyone and GTRacer has actually posted very helpful comments here of late.

Snortin, i love the toon 👍 Very impressed you tooned the background and interior + driver, looks great. The front wheel is off though. It does look different in the photo so you must have just followed a wrong line somewhere with it. It isn't really a problem, just requires you to check the toon against the photo more often, i've done things like this hundreds of times. Hope you've got another on the go.

I've been working my socks on my latest Eclipse toon and am really happy with how it's coming.

if you look at your vector compared to the original the original has much lower profile wheels, with your wheels having larger tires the body work would have to be cut off in order to compensate.

I didn't mean to say he couldn't post criticism, it's just that everything I've posted GTR4 has had something to say about it; it was ultimately his attitude about things that irked me.

But I can trim the wheel-well back a bit, since that's the thing that looks odd to me. I didn't want to start a flamefest, I just wanted GTR4 to know that I didn't appreciate the cockyness.

If you find me confrontational, then I guess all I can say is that I was keepin it real. I tend to deal with things as they appear.

Snortin Norton
So how long does it take you to do a tread pattern?

Not entirely sure on that. Perhaps half an hour. I sat down with Spinal Tap on dvd and was still working on the wheel when the film finished, so maybe 2 hours for the whole thing. Getting the writing on the tyre took quite a while too, and still doesn't look quite right.

'Tis all cool Snortin ;)

I think I figured out what I was doing wrong, I used too many shades, and they didn't flow, they were like stripes. I need to make it curvier, but still flow. I started a new project now, it shouldn't be too hard to guess. LOL.
Here it is.
I think it's a lot better than my Alfa, and I'm inspired to finish it.
