Hey guys, sorry if I killed the momentum. I just a bit busy, I ran 54 laps (27km) on Friday. Skython, would you mind if you could give me some constructive criticism on my shots?

OK, here goes.

Top Gear Comparason #2: Small car.

- Each of you has been given $10,000 and asked to buy a small, used car.
- You have 42 hours from the time of this post to obtain your car and announce it here. Give the make, model, year and purchase price.
- Your car must remain absolutely stock. Wheels, oil etc are not permitted (yet) as such things do cost money in real life.
- There will be a number of challenges during the week which may require additional funds, so try not to spend all your money at once.

*To keep things interesting I don't want to see everyone in near identical cars. Once a specific car has been announced by one competitor, everyone else must choose something different. i.e. If Jezza buys an R34 GTR of any sort, then nobody else may buy an R34 GTR. An R32 or R35 however would still be permitted.
*GTR used as an example, but not eligible for this comparason due to being both too big, and too expensive.

Note: Finding and buying a car is the first of 5 challenges, 4 of which require user participation. A scoring system has already been devised and will be revealed along with the challenges as the week progresses.

It's final

1st: GrumpEone

And SVX, some criticism, I'd say you need to do both vertical and horizontal shots, and some tilting the camera even just a little can make a shot look more active, also a little bit of blur helps. And, you're angles are excellent, and I like that your proper racing moving shots have the camera placed in a realistic spot, and still look excellent, but and when a car's in the shade, the exposure should go up an extra notch, it's hard to see (it may just be my monitor though) but still, great shots 👍

^ That's quite a bit bigger than I was anticipating and as there is still more than 24 hours to go I will give you the chance to downsize if you want. If not, it could make for some interesting results that wouldn't be too different to what often happens on the TV show.

Incidentally, if more than 3 people wish to take part, I have no problems with that. We could use the cast of 5th gear and Top Gear USA to compliment the usual three (if we even bother to assign presenters to each participant).

Can you add a length restriction your looking for. You must really define "Small" since you didn't like my selection that fits everything else.

I guess I'd forgotten that the American definition of small is somewhat larger than the European (or even Japanese) definition of small. There will be no length restriction, and your choice of car is acceptable. It fits the requirements in much the same way as the three-wheel-drive Suzuki fit the requirements for the Top Gear Bolivia special.

Take my last post as a direction for everyone else to try not to go as large as your choice rather than a request for you to go smaller.

Jet Badger, Good choice, but are you sure about that price? My spreadsheet and PAL version game both show the price of your car as 5,414. Of course it is possible for the numbers to be different if you are running a different version such as NTSC-NA or NTSC-J.

Anyway, welcome aboard. Now why don't you go and represent your country on the GTPlanet World map.

Hello all! Well I have a NTSC (US) version and I was too lazy to write down the price when I bought the car. Now checked the Used Car List and it's really 5,414. Sorry, my mistake :)

Car:
Mazda RX-7 GT-Limited (FC,J) '85

Type: FR
Power: 167 HP
Mileage: 54,714.6
Oil: Dirty
Price: 5,914 CR
Balance 4,086 CR

Is this acceptable? It's pretty small or do you consider it a sports car rather than 'Small' car, although the eighties didn't provide much sport in it's sports models.
IMO- a HP restriction would get you more of what you want than a Length or type.

It's smaller than the Silvia so I can't complain.
I deliberately chose the title "small car" to allow for more than just the typical hatchbacks in the segment. There are a few convertibles as well as the odd coupe and one truck that would fit the requirements.
As with the length, there will be no HP restriction for reasons that will become clear.

Anyone else wanna play? There's about 3 hours left before the next challenge, and I'll be deducting 1 point per hour (or part thereof) for anyone late for the next challenge. Consider this the virtual equivalent to points being deducted for breakdowns between challenges.

I was thinking of doing it, I thought we had another day? As I have to go to school.

I was thinking of doing it, I thought we had another day? As I have to go to school.

I did say 42 hours as in 1 3/4 days, not 72 hours or 3 days.

I'd have liked to have set it at 48 hours, but didn't want to be doing the first update at 2:30am.

Update after first challenge.

Each of you were given 10,000 CR and asked to buy a small, used car.

BH-21 pulled up first with a Nissan SILVIA K's (S13) '91 which had cost him 7,136 CR. He was followed a few hours later by;
Jet Badger in a bargain Honda CR-X SiR '90 for which he had paid just 5,414 CR. Some time later,
GrumpEone arrived in a 'not so sporty' Mazda RX-7 GT-Limited (FC,J) '85 which he got for a steal at only 5,914 CR.

You recieve 1 point for every 100 CR you have left from the initial budget, thus scoring so far;
BH-21 10,000 - 7,136 = 2,864 -> 28 points.
Jet Badger 10,000 - 5,414 = 4,586 -> 45 points.
GrumpEone 10,000 - 5,914 = 4,086 -> 40 points.

The Stigs virtual cousin Bob will now set a laptime at a small racetrack in an iconic small car - a Mini Cooper '02. You will then try to beat his time, scoring 1 point for every second that you are faster, or lose 1 point for every second slower. The track? Driving Park: Motorland (Normal direction). Bobs time? 0:51.936 You have 48 hours from the time of this post.

Good luck.

No Oil Change right?

^Right. For this part of the challenge your car remains as you bought it - though you can switch the driving aids off if you want seing as these cars likely didn't have any.

Hi Guys,
I may not be able to be on very often so my participation may be scarce. Good luck guys. Live love and play louder.

That's a shame seing as it was your idea and I don't have another comparason thought out yet. Also you're the only one able to update the title to reflect the current challenge/discussion etc.

So you put some spare parts in the trunk then? Shouldn't be any problems if you break down then!

Do'h! I thought you did it yesterday. Can I still get do this?

Anyone can still join in up to the end of this challenge, but you're already around 14 hours late for the start and...

I'll be deducting 1 point per hour (or part thereof) for anyone late for the next challenge. Consider this the virtual equivalent to points being deducted for breakdowns between challenges.

Very nice shot, too bad all the jaggies from poor modeling, I really like the body roll, and reflections. Getting the Photomode bug yet?

I had to use 12kg of steel plate behind the front fascia, plus whatever the JB Weld weighs.

I'm not sure that I am getting the photobug yet. I was just trying it out. Yeah to bad about the jaggies and the polygons showing around rounded edges but that one was best of the three. What I could use is some pointers or a link to what would be a good size to resize the photos to for display or how you guys put up your clustered displays. These are straight from the PS2 with only Auto Leveling in Photoshop. Since this isn't the photo thread, I guess PM'ing me would be best.

Update after second (and third) challenges.
Bob set a laptime of 0:51.936 around Driving Park: Motorland in a Mini Cooper '02. You had to beat his time, scoring 1 point for every second that you were faster, losing 1 point for every second slower.

BH-21 was first to finish with a laptime of 0'49.579 using the help of a 10kg block of steel zip tied below the front grill of his car. He was 2.357 seconds quicker than Bob, so scores 2 points this round.
GrumpEone was next to finish with a laptime of 0'51.797, just 0.139 second faster than Bob and so scoring 0 points.
Jet Badger put in a couple of extra laps to get his time down to 0'50.857, barely one second quicker than Bob, but enough to place him second in this round with 1 point.

Adding these few points makes little difference to the score so far;
Jet Badger 45 +1 = 46 points.
GrumpEone 40 +0 = 40 points.
BH-21 28 +2 = 30 points.

In the small car category, size really matters. For the third test your cars will be measured up against the Mini Cooper '02 again, only this time literally. You gain 1 point for every inch your car is shorter than the Mini, or lose 1 point for every inch it is longer.

*As the sizes in the game are given in millimeters, the differences in length are calculated in millimeters before being converted to inches by dividing by25.4.

BH-21 bought a relative monster with his Silvia being 844mm or 33.2" longer than the mini, costing him -33 points.
Jet Badger had a better understanding of small, his CR-X being just 174mm or 6.8" longer than the Mini, costing him just -6 points.
GrumpEone landed somewhere in the middle, his RX7 being 684mm or 26.9" longer than the Mini, costing him -26 points.

After a very bad round, the scores now stand at;
Jet Badger 45 +1 -6 = 40 points.
GrumpEone 40 +0 -26 = 14 points.
BH-21 28 +2 -33 = -3 points.

Small cars, and especially older small cars tend to be lacking in power. Now it is time to modify your cars using whatever money you have left from the initial budget. You will gain 1 point for every extra horse you can cram into the engine.
- Wash, wings and wheels are free.
- Nitrous is not permitted.
- Everything else is as it costs in the game.

BH-21 has just 10,000 - 7,136 = 2,864 credits to play with.
Jet Badger has 10,000 - 5,134 = 4,866 credits remaining.
GrumpEone has 10,000 - 5,914 = 4,086 credits left.

You have just 24 hours before the final challenge is revealed.
