Thank you for the extra 24 hours yesterday, and sorry for being late. I've PMed you my time.

You PM'd your times for rounds 2 & 3, but we're almost finished round 4 now.

And I converted my 180 degree steering wheel to a 220-something(90 degrees to right and ~130 to the left) wheel on that Esses chicane :banghead:

Hopefully not permanantly! - that would be annoying.

Comments:
Normally I drive with aids at 000, but for this car I used 20,0,1 (they are the one thing we're aloud to play with right?) just to give it some stability.
Driving this car on tarmac is interesting as it does understeer a little. But if you slide to get it into a corner, then unless you're facing the direction that the corner exits in, you'll probably spin.

Edit: I'll be away for the weekend, so if my submission for challenges 5 (and others?) are late that will be why.

You'll appreciate round 5 then, where you are encouraged to play with the settings. I'll get it underway ASAP so you have a chance to try it before you leave.

Stock cars in general and especially race type cars in GT4 are all tricky because they are generally set up wrong. I don't know about you guys but I don't care to learn to drive a car set up wrong very much. Not being able to tune the car to our individual driving styles the results will continue to be similar. Hopefully during this comparison sometime we will get to tune our cars.

Stock cars tend to have individual personalities that are easily masked by tuning - that's why I prefer stock to tuned. However, the next round asks you to tweak your cars, and 2 of the 3 other comparasons I've got lined up are more focused on tuning.

(Final) Round 5

Racecars come as standard with lots of tuning options.*
Without spending ANY MONEY at all, only adjusting the settings of the standard components, you have to try and improve your La SartheI laptime.
Score 1 point for every half second you gain.

* Tuning cars come with very limited tuning options and upgrade potential. If you are using a D1GP or other tuning car you are permitted to fit whatever drivetrain, suspension and brake components are available from the tuning village. However no power or weight modifications are permitted.

Competition closes 28 hours after the time of this post.

I am not satisfied with my lap time (A lap time under 3'40 is definitely possible), but I do not have any more time on my hands to improve it. 👍

Here is the screenshot of my lap time:

In the previous round I could have been faster (Bob was 4s in front of me), but because my human input device malfunctioned, I didn't do anymore laps. Now I was almost 2s faster than Bob and I'm very happy with it even though the time isn't very good (I'm not good at driving race cars, nor setting them up) :) And I found it much easier to control throttle and brake with DS2 :)

The move went well, the internet acquisition not so well, and the library's internet was too restrictive, and the laptop battery is finally toast, so I was unable to even hit a coffee shop to connect. Finally I am back online, and I will post my times, although I'm sure there will some sort of penalty for lateness, if not total DQ (Not like the car had a chance in most of the challenges with a stock top speed of only 153MPH), so I just did quick runs for comparison.

Track: Circuit de la Sarthe I
Car: Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Evo 2 Rally Car
Time: 3:48.943

Comments:
I was recently invited to do some test driving for Peugeot at the famed Lemans circuit. Upon arrival I was somewhat dismayed to see that the car they had bought was not their current Lemans prototype the 908 HDi as I had assumed, but rather their legendary 1986 world rally championship winning 205 Turbo 16 Evolution 2 rally car. The crew seem to find the expression on my face quite funny, still its not every day you get to drive a Group B rally car.*

Upon hitting the track it was clear this car is quite unlike any of other car I have driven in Gran Turismo, it understeers on entry, it oversteers on exit when provoked and its very unstable through high speed corners, especially the Porsche curves, this coupled with the rally gearbox means the car is only capable of a top speed of 257kp/h. I return to the pits after setting a best lap time of 3:57.217.

I'm told that the crew which has been bought along will tinker with the settings to make the car a better tarmac racing machine, so i promptly tell them to adjust the brake balance controller settings, the suspension setup, (esp ride height, it was 147mm) the gearbox ratios, (which are lengthened so that top speed is now just under 300kp/h) the aids are turned down to 1,0,1, (I didn't think these Group B cars had ASC or TCS but apparently this one does) and the differential is also adjusted.
Returning to the circuit the handling is much improved, its still twitchy but its far more controllable. I start to get into a bit of a rhythm and eventually I post a fastest lap time of 3:48.943.
I return to the pits, some jokes are exchanged about the possibility of testing a more appropriate Peugeot race car next time, and I then head for home.

* Group B rally cars were banned from the FIA world rally championship at the end of 1986 following the deaths of many spectators and drivers during that season. The lack of rules imposed on their design meant they where extremely quick, some quotes off the net;
"The Lancia Delta S4 could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds, on a gravel road. Henri Toivonen drove an S4 around Estoril so quickly that he would have qualified sixth for the 1986 Portuguese Grand Prix. Nigel Mansell sampled a Peugeot 205 T16 and said it could out-accelerate his F1 car"
worth a google and/or youtube if you aren't familiar with them.

Round 4 Results

You were challenged to lap the chicaned version of La SartheI in your unmodified cars in under 4 minutes, scoring +/- 1 point per full second you were faster/slower.

Magic Racer lay down the gautlet in his Mazda RX7 LM with an astonishing time of 3'42.573 earning him 17 points.
BH-21 was next in his CLK Touring Car setting a time of 4'02.204 costing him -2 points.
Jet Badger suffered some technical problems with his Honda Mobil1 NSX and could only manage a time of 4'04,775 costing him -4 points.
shotamagee fought with his 205 Turbo 16 Evo 2 Rally Car to set a very respectible time of 3:57.217 earning him 2 points.
GrumpEone returned to slide his Hyper Silvia D1GP to a 4'19.600 costing him -19 points.
SVX eventually brought his A4 Touring Car in to a time of 4'00.561 which was just enough to neither lose nor score any points.

B-spec Bob in the Ford GT40 actually took a few seconds less than 4 minutes at 3:50.751.

Round 5 Results

You were asked to adjust the settings on your car so that you could beat your previous La SartheI time, scoring 1 point for every half second improvement.

Magic Racer was quick to finish with his RX-7 LM Race Car with a time of 3'40.977. This was only 1.596 seconds faster than his previous time, scoring just 3 points.
Jet Badger used alternative control methods to bring his Mobil1 NSX JGTC in to a time of 3'57,429. This was a good 7.346 seconds faster than his previous troubled run, and scores 14 points.
BH-21 was next to finish in his CLK Touring Car with a time of 3'56.064. A decent improvement of 6.140 seconds scores him 12 points.
GrumpEone with minimal effort in his Hyper Silvia D1GP finished with a time of 4'03.234. An incredible improvement of 16.366 seconds scores him a massive 32 points.
shotamagee found the going much easier in his tweaked 205 Turbo 16 Evo 2 Rally Car setting a very quick time of 3:48.943. An improvement of 8.274 seconds scores him 16 points.
SVX was last to finish in his A4 Touring car with a time of 3'59.626. An improvement of just 0.935 seconds is only good for 1 point.

The Scores So Far

shotamagee scored 18 points to add to his 24, taking him to 42 points.
Magic Racer gained 20 points to add to his 12, so now has 32 points.
Jet Badger gained 10 points to add to his 10, and now has 20 points.
BH-21 also gained 10 points to lift his score from -12 to -2 points.

But wait... SVXs late entry to the dragrace was slower than the rest, so giving each of you another 10 points.
GrumpEones even later and even slower dragrace result also gives each of you (including SVX) another 10 points.

...Then GrumpEone and SVX need to get their scores for the other rounds bringing them up to 13 and 11 points respectively, before adding in the time penalties...

Final Scores
Code:
[U]Driver Car	Bonus Power Drag Speed Lap Tuned Penalty Total[/U]
Shotamagee (205 Evo 2 Rally Car) +40 -22 +50 -24 +2 +16 -0	= 62
Magic Racer (Mazda RX-7 LM) +0 -8 +40 -0 +17 +3 -0	= 52
Jet Badger (Honda Mobil 1 NSX) +10 -8 +30 -2 -4 +14 -0	= 40
BH-21 (CLK Touring Car) +20 -27 +20 -5 -2 +12 -0	= 18
SVX (Audi A4 Touring Car) +20 -16 +10 -4 +0 +1 -53	=-42
GrumpEone (Hyper Silvia D1GP) +40 -7 +0 -33 -19 +32 -148	=-135

So if you need to get yourself a 500hp racecar to pit against an old Ford, then you shouldn't bother with a car designed to go sideways. You should instead leave your sanity at the gate and buy yourself an outlawed killer of a Group B Rally car!

And on that bombshell, it's the end of the Racecar comparason.

Now over to your latest winner shotamagee if he want's to run the next one.
Alternatively the original winner GrumpEone might like to do it.
Or as a last resort, the usual suspect Car-less has some more comparasons ready to go.

Thanks Car-less for running this round. Yay I finished with positive points! :)

Congrats Shotamagee good show and I enjoyed the read of your Sarthe run! 👍

I had a car in mind for this that would of been perfect, but budget woes of late and the fact that I have already modfied every car I have in the stock 500 hp range, one of my favorite ranges, except for this Mercedes CLK Touring Car which was still stock. Anyways my budget will continue to fluctuate for the next few weeks. I'm back to 2.2 million or so it just depends on how long it takes me to buy all the 4.5, 3.5 million CR cars in the game that I don't have yet.

Alternatively the original winner GrumpEone might like to do it.

Still not ready yet, the moving 'experience' ate away at precious planning time, so stack them credits while I iron-out a set of challenges for one in the near future, that focuses on upgrading. Anyway I'm still in the penalty box, 5 minute major with a game misconduct, for Obstruction-Moving with an attempt to injure (myself).:)

Congrats, shotamagee!

With shotamagee away for the weekend and GrumpEone still too busy, I propose my running fbccars924s suggested Hot Hatch comparason next. If nobody proposes a better idea before I retire for the night in 6-8 hours time, I'll put it up sometime around midnight GMT.

That would be neat, especially if we either got the limits of the cars that fit that or a list of cars that we can use like GT4 uses.

Buy a new hatchback costing under $50,000. Your car should be undriven, unmodified and should retain the stock oil for the first round.
You have 65 hours from the time of this post to make and announce your choice.

* You are advised to keep at least 1/3 of your budget for modifications as you will be compared against the pre-modified HPA Stage II R32.

** I would prefer not to see everyone in similar cars. To aid this, should someone choose to campaign a Peugeot 206 RC, I would appreciate if nobody else chose a Peugeot.

*** Cars must be regular road versions, and should come from the manufacturers new car dealer. Concepts, tuners and race cars are not permitted. There are about 50 eligible cars ranging in power from 60hp to 250hp. Anything between 100hp and 200hp should be affordable and competitive.

**** Deadlines will be set for each challenge, and I'll be deducting 1 point per hour for anyone that misses a deadline. Consider this the virtual equivalent to points being deducted for breakdowns.

Top Gear Comparason #5: Hot Hatch

I was choosing between a Clio Sport 2.0 16V '02, Ibiza Cupra and a Cooper S. I chose the one with the best power to weight ratio - the marvelous Renault Clio Sport '02, 169HP, and at 29,700Cr it was the most expensive from the three.

img0023mo.jpg

How come the bot gets a 522 HP car of the tunners village that we can't purchase from? Isn't that a bit of a stacked deck.

Yep, but the bot scores no points in the dragrace, and being pre-tuned there's not much chance of scoring in the tune-up round. If however one of the competitors chose to drive it, nobody else would stand a chance.

Besides, isn't it always a stacked deck?
15,000cr 2 door coupe vs. new 33,000cr Nissan 350Z.
10,000cr used small car vs. new 22,190cr Mini Cooper.
20,000cr used AWD car vs. new 33,920cr Impreza Spec C.

Stupid double post.

Well Its just I've faced that car a bit and its a mean one. Especially when your half its HP or less.

GrumpEone has arrived at the VW dealership with 50,000, to purchase his choice for the 5th comparison. This time he is looking for a hatchback, after much haggling he finally goes with a FF (a drivetrain he detests), since the 4WD version was too pricey. Although he still bought the 4WD for his last option, which made the salesman quite happy. After he closes the deals he heads of the Peugeot dealership to pickup his second and cheapest choice. Then it's off to the garage to admire his 3 new acquisitions.

The 1st Choice (Middle of the road):
Car: VW Golf V GTi '05
Price: 32,750 Cr
Cr Bal.: 17,250 Cr
Power: 204 HP
Weight: 1336 kg
Dimensions: 4,204 x 1,759 x 1,485

Other choices: Peugeot 106 RallyE '03 for 12,630 Cr, & VW Golf IV R32 '03 for 43,240 Cr.

Top Gear Comparo #5: Hot Hatch

SVX got told by the producers, to find a hot hatch for under 50k, and then he'll compete in a series of challenges. When SVX got told he needed a hot hatch, he thought of the Type R. After he was dismissed, he went to his nearest Honda dealer. Not too much later, he drove out of the dealership with a brand new 2004 Honda Civic Type R.

Ok, looks like I'm back in time for this round, I'll pick the BMW 120d as my primary means of transport for this challenge (someone has to see how RWD and diesel power stack up).

Car:BMW 120d
Power: 164
Cost: $33020

But I might also privately see how the Ford Focus RS compares as well.

Car: Ford Focus RS
Power: 220
Cost: $41410

* Props to Car-Less for admin duties on the last round, (I'm still not convinced I wouldn't pick the Rx7 LM as the best all rounder, but the top gear testing methods can't be argued with, so I guess me and the Peugeot 205 T16 (in gracious Clarkson style) get to do the old L to the forehead at everyone else. :)

You were asked to buy a new hatchback for less than $50,000.

SVX was quick to choose a Honda Civic Type R '04.
Jet Badger decided on a bit of French flair with a Renault Clio Sport '02.
BH-21 after a bit of a mixup decided on a Peugeot 206 RC '03.
GrumpEone eventually settled on a VW Golf V GTi '05.
runfromcheney is a new entrant, choosing a Peugeot 106 Rallye '03.
shotamagee decided to mix things up with a RWD diesel BMW 120d '04.

Round 1: Pricing

You score 1 point for every 1000 cr you have remaining.

runfromcheney payed a bargain 12,630 cr for a massive 37 points.
SVX spent twice as much at 23,310 cr which scores 26 points.
BH-21 paid a bit more for his car at 29,090 cr scoring 20 points.
Jet Badger spent practically the same at 29,700 cr for an identical 20 points.
GrumpEone went slightly higher at 32,750 cr scoring 17 points.
shotamagee spent the most at 33,020 cr but still scores 16 points.

Round 2: Hitting The Town

Now that you have your cars, you are going to rip up the city streets like chavs do everywhere. Travel to Hong Kong and run laps of the city centre in the reverse direction - finishing along the waterfront. You will be competing against a local racer (B-spec Bob) in his pre-tuned HPA Stage II R32.

Gain 1 point for every second you beat him, lose 1 for every second you are slower.

You have 24 hours from the time of this post. Good luck - you'll need it!
