Round 2: Hitting The Town

So GrumpEone shows up on time (for a change), at Hong Kong with 3 cars. First he runs a few laps in his most expensive VW, in the normal direction then stops for a quick pit. BH-21 points out that the times are supposed to be run on the track in Reverse direction. Obviously angry at the wasted time at the track, GrumpEone decides to showboat drift every single turn in Hong Kong with the 4WD VW, then runs two more laps in reverse direction to set a time for the VW Golf IV R32 '03.

GrumpEone, then does a quick run of three laps in his super-cheap Peugeot 106 RallyE. Soon after he is all warmed-up, he breaks out his chosen competition VW Golf V GTI '05. He runs about ten laps before he finally hits a time of 1'45.629, very pleased with his time he packs up the cars to head off to the Test track, to set some 0-400, 0-1000, and Top Speed benchmarks for his stock cars. He is though perplexed, at how his FF VW only trailed the 4WD by half a second.

Round 2 Results

You were sent to Hong Kong to run laps of the city centre in the reverse direction - finishing along the waterfront. You were competing against B-spec Bob in the HPA Stage II R32 who set a very quick time of 1:32.286.

Score 1 point for every second you beat him, lose 1 for every second you are slower.

BH-21 was first to finish with a 1:48.395 in his Peugeot 206 RC, scoring -16 points.
runfromcheney was next clocking a 1:51.550 in his Peugeot 106 Rallye for -19 points.
shotamagee was the fastest at 1'41.441 in the BMW 320d losing just -9 points.
Jet Badger stayed out all night, eventually posting a 1:45.166 in the Clio for -12 points.
GrumpEone after going the wrong way managed a 1:45.629 in his VW Golf V GTI '05 for -13 points.
SVX caught the slow boat to China, and has yet to arrive and run his laps.

GrumpEtoo only managed 1:57.637 in the 106 RallyE, scoring -25 points.
GrumpEthree posted a 1:45.114 in the VW Golf IV R32 '03 for -12 points.
shotamagee also ran a second car, posting a 1:36.432 in the Ford Focus RS for -4 points.

Round 3: Pimp Your Ride

The first thing any boy racer does after being embarrased by just how slow his new car actually is, is to get some bolt-on go-faster parts from the auto store. Head back into town and spend your remaining credits on making your cars faster. New wheels are free, Racing tyres and Nitrous are not permitted. Anything else is fair game - including aftermarket wings.

Once your cars have been modified, return to the track and try to beat your previous time. Score 1 point for every half second improvement.

You have 24 hours from the time of this post.

Round 3 Results

After spending your remaining credits on some bolt-ons and a bit of bling you were sent back to the track to beat your previous times. Scoring was 1 point for every half second improvement.

SVX got his Civic time down to 1:39.965, just 4.414s faster than the 1:44.379 he set when his boat finally arrived. This scores him 8 points after losing -12 points in round 2.
BH-21 took his 206 to a new time of 1:40.461, a 7.934s improvement for 15 points.
GrumpEone in the Golf GTI managed a 1:38.224, 7.405s faster than before for 14 points.
shotamagee was fastest in the BMW at 1:34.437, 7.004s faster for an identical 14 points.
Jet Badger pulled his Renault in to a 1:40.206 just 4.960s better for 9 points.
runfromcheney took his time in the 106, a 1:39.423 beat his old time by 12.127s for 24 points.

GrumpEtoo also set a time in a Peugeot 106. At 1:39.839 he was a massive 17.798s faster than before for 35 points.
GrumpEthree in the 4WD Golf R32 wasn't so lucky with a 1:37.393, an improvement of 7.721s scoring just 15 points.
shotamagee beat everyone in his backup Focus RS at 1:34.151 which was just 2.281s faster than before for 4 points.

Round 4: Running The Lights

Now that your cars are somewhat competitive it's time to take them to the bright lights of Las Vegas where you have been entered into a dragrace. The fastest will score 50 points, next fastest 40 and so on down to the slowest who shall not score any points at all. (The alternative cars will be scored as if they had been chosen in place of the cars that were actually chosen).

You have 24 hours from the time of this post.

Edit: Times for this round only should be submitted by PM.

runfromcheney is way out in the lead in the little 106, but will it be able to put the power down as well as the larger cars? All the other main competitors are very close to each other with just 5 points seperating 2nd from 6th!

I knew I shoud've tried harder for those 0,2s. I would then be only semi-last :D It's really amazing to see that the oldest, the chepest and the least powerful car is standing in front of much more powerful cars :) Peugeot always made good small cars

He is though perplexed, at how his FF VW only trailed the 4WD by half a second.

It might have been only half a second in laptime, but stock the R32 is three quarters of a second faster at the standing quarter (this round) and 11.5mph faster flatout - both figures taken from your tests.

It's really amazing to see that the oldest, the chepest and the least powerful car is standing in front of much more powerful cars :) Peugeot always made good small cars

Do you think it will have much chance against the RWD BMW in a dragrace? With 50 points up for grabs this round, it could possibly fall to joint last with 1 round to go.

Note, I have edited my previous post to remind everyone that times should be submitted by PM for this round.

Well I'm pretty sure the 120d now has the worst power to weight ratio, but yeah RWD (and heaps of diesel torque) should 'hopefully' more than make up for it.

Interesting side note the 120d and the 106 Rallye have the same stock PWR of 113 (according to the car database found somewhere on the forum), but there's no doubt the Bimmer is way quicker.

Round 4 Results

As I don't yet have all of your times for the dragrace, I cannot give the results - sorry.

Round 5: Flat Out

You guessed it. The final challenge is the classic top speed test at the test course. See just how fast your modified car can go. Score 1 point for every mph you are faster than 155, lose 1 point for every mph slower.

Luckily all of the original parts that you had replaced have been brought along. This means that if you don't like your upgraded exhaust or whatever, then you can pop into the pit garages and replace it with the original bog standard one.

You have 24 hours from the time of this post.

Round 4 Results

Your modified cars were entered into a dragrace, the winner taking 50 points, second place taking 40 points etc.

GrumpEone was the fastest in his Golf V GTI with a 14.627 for 50 points.
shotamagee was close behind in the BMW 120d at 14.830 for 40 points.
SVX came in next with his Honda Civic Type R at 15.048 for 30 points.
BH-21 was only slightly slower in the 206 RC at 15.173 for 20 points.
Jet Badger didn't do so well in the Renault Clio at 15,505 for 10 points.
runfromcheney brought up the rear in the 106 at 16.051 for 0 points.

GrumpEthree was the fastest of all with the Golf IV R32 at 13.754 which would have won 50 points.
shotamagee wouldn't have done so well in the Focus RS at 15.240 worth just 20 points.
GrumpEtoo wasn't quite the slowest in his 106 RallyE at 15.584 and would have gained 10 points.

Round 5 Results

The classic top speed test. Score 1 point for every mph you are faster than 155, lose 1 point for every mph slower.

SVX ran away from the rest in the Civic Type R at 161.57mph scoring 6 points.
BH-21 was just shy of the target in the 206 RC at 154.71mph scoring 0 points at all.
shotamagee didn't do too badly in the BMW 120d at 152.53mph losing just -2 points.
GrumpEone was slightly slower in the Golf V GTI at 151.51mph losing just -3 points.
Jet Badger couldn't keep up, the Clio only capable of 144.77mph and losing -10 points.
runfromcheney was slowest of all in the Peugeot 106 at 140.1mph losing -14 points.

GrumpEthree chose a little rocket ship in the VW Golf IV R32, 166.03mph would have been worth 11 points.
shotamagee wouldn't have been much worse off in the Focus RS, 149.79mph would only have cost -5 points.
GrumpEtoo was really lagging behind in the little 106 RallyE at 140.47mph he would have lost -14 points.

shotamagee Ford Focus RS '02 +8 -4 +4 +20 -5 23

SVX, an early favourite in the Honda Civic Type R didn't do quite as well as expected and placed third - before time penalties. More than 15 hours late for round 2, and 3 minutes away from being 14 hours late in round 4 loses him 28 points. The resulting 30 point total drops him behind BH-21 and the Peugeot 206.

runfromcheney in the Peugeot 106 despite an early lead started to fall behind as the going got tougher. The same was true for GrumpEtoo who had chosen the same car. BH-21 in the slightly larger 206 didn't do much better, so it looks like Peugeot doesn't make cars like they used too.

So GrumpEone in the Golf V GTi is the winner - even if GrumpEthree would have scored slightly better in the Golf IV R32. Looks like Volkswagen makes the Hottest Hot Hatches.

...and on that bombshell, the Hot Hatch comparason is over. Now it's over to you lot to decide who runs the next one. I may have 2 more up my sleeves, but I want to see some fresh ideas first to prevent things from getting too predictable.

Since I was a first time entrant, I wasn't expecting to win, even though it would have been sweet. :P Still, it was fun and it actually got me to start a new GT4 game. I didn't discover how bored I had gotten with GT5 until I dusted off GT4.

I'm not surprised that the VW eventually won, I figured it to give the best performance, I come to expect nothing less from cooky ol' Ferdinand Piech. In fact, I was considering getting the GTi until I saw that Grumpy beat me to it.

Anyways, I got an idea for the next one: We should do a redux of Top Gear's "best car for a teenager" challenge: The GT4 "First Car" challenge. We all get $10K and go and buy what we think would be the best first car for someone who has never played GT4 (Or any game in the Gran Turismo series) before. That ought to be interesting and fun.

Oops, that's a big time penalty! Next time I'll make a bit more of an effort to get on time.
Congrats GumpEone!
