The camper van race feels scripted to me (if you stay in last place until chicago the van in front will go off line slightly to the right and then recover just in time for the turn). I just hope the whole thing isnt scripted it would just kill the game for me.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah I repeated it a few times and they followed the same paths, but I've got a couple of theories on that.

1) It's basically still a tutorial, so it's keeping things simple and it's easier for you to learn where the overtaking opportunities are.

2) Those vans are just so damn sluggish that they basically don't move enough to even begin to react to each other dynamically. If you mess them up with a shunt they will change their line, so it's not completely fixed, they're just slow getting started.

I got gold after 4 tries, almost feels as if they try to pit you on purpose if you are not paying attention. things get a lot easier if you can find your way up to 5/6th place by the end of the 1st lap!

Iv unlocked the top gear test track and still havnt done the intermeadiate lotus yet. I am on Level 13 though. I think levels unlock tracks.
Doing the specials gets your levels up quick if you get gold on them all. Same with B & A licence. Not done any others yet.

I can't beat the damn Lotus one at all! I got silver on the van one but I told myself I'd never play it again just because of how painful it was to go through. Although if I'm reading this correctly, I need to get gold on it in order to unlock the track. Is this true? I'd honestly rather play the slip 'n slide Lotus challenge 100 times over than play that one once.

I've earned gold on all other challenges leading up to this one...

Gold in the VW van to unlock TGTT, yes.

FINALLY GOT GOLD IN THE VAN CHALLENGE.

You just have to fly into the corners, straight past the other vans, brake late. If you're in 6th by the end of lap one, you're good.

Not even going to touch the lotus one again tonight.

This van race is kicking my ass, I can't even finish a race without being disqualified...

Take the inside on turn 1 by just lifting off ever so slightly and downshift, you should move up to #11.

Instead of swerving around to get to Chicago, drive straight into Chicago which should move you into #9/8, fight for the inside.

Take the inside lane again going into Hammerhead which will move you up to #8/7.

Gun it at @ the followthrough and maintain your position. Be careful heading into turn 6 because the other vans brake early and you will bump into them if you are not careful. You want to brake as late as possible.

After Gambon you should be placed around 5/6th. At that point it should be easy for you to get gold.

Polyphony Digital sure know how to take out the "awesomeness" of Top Gear Test Track with those awful events.

I LOL'ed as soon as the race started because I couldn't believe that it was actually happening. However, It does feel totally rewarding in the end.

I'm level 19 and have completed all of the Top Gear challenges (the last one was fun) and I don't have it so it must be something else...

Damn TG Van challenges it's the third time im like 3rd or 2nd and AI bump me out. So close ;) The disqualified is a bit too much sensible at some spot and not enough in others. Annoying to learn them

Yesterday I had huge problems with the van challenge but today I found out you needed gold to unlock the track in arcade so I thought I could try one more time...

...And I made it on my first attempt! :) Passed no. 1 on the followthrough (he did run into me and almost pushing me off the track but he crashed into the tires... brakes? what is that?)

completely agree. Also, the Lotus one is driving me insane. Any tips ? I've already tried raising the ABS, but still can't control that damn car for the life of me.

I set TC to 5 and Skid Recovery Force to On and it went a lot better.

I did it, took a while. I kept being taken out of the race by bad AI.

In the start, late brake to the left or right on the first turn to the left. You should overtake 1 car, maybe two if you're lucky. Right after they will slow down and bunch again, I take 4 cars here by squeezing between. When you're doing the big U-Turn, you need to be in 7/8th place or you have no shot to win. After the U-Turn you will bit a slight straight, stay to the RIGHT by the grass. Make sure to late bake, and take 3-4 places. You should be in 3rd or 4th place at worst here. Now you'll be at the high speed areas, and before you get to lap 2, you NEED to be in 2nd or 3rd place. If you're not, restart. This isn't an easy one, but very doable.

Also, ABS didn't help me. Do they let you turn on that skid force thing? If yes, use it. Good for noobier players. The Lotus has a lot of kick in the back wheels, should help stay straight. Other than this option, I don't think the others help that much. Course traction control will be helpful to the back wheels getting away from you, but I didn't use anything but "ABS 1". I believe that "Skid" control in options is like a wild TCS. If you can use it in this race, again, I would suggest you do it unless you're like me. Stubborn and willing to do this race 50 times.. When I learned how to pass them, I would always be in a battle for first. But man, that guy takes me out. Hate the rail riding into you in challenges. They shouldn't have a set path that much.

The Top Gear Events are the only part of the game that has really challenged me so far, not so much in that the challenge is difficult but that i was disqualified quite often.

Oddly enough once i didn't get disqualified i golden both events straight away. The van one by quite some margin but the Lotus only by the last couple of corners. I admit i had to turn on the skid control thing with the Lotus to do it.
