Top Gear Test Track in Gran Turismo 5!

good idea. Im having trouble as well with the lotus.

The van was kinda easy, I overtook 1st on the second to last corner. You can go into that corner flat out easy. You can make up a lot of ground there
 
I just Golded the Lotus event a couple of hours ago. It pains me to admit it but I had all assists on full except TC which I had on 5.

Problem for me is I feel that I cheated to get that gold. I'm not a great driver but certainly not a bad one (all assists off usually), But it's the only way I could get round the track and even then it took 7 tries.

In a nutshell, i'm pretty disappointed with the first 2 Top Gear challenges. Hopefully the 3rd will be more fun.

Take the inside on turn 1 by just lifting off ever so slightly and downshift, you should move up to #11.

Instead of swerving around to get to Chicago, drive straight into Chicago which should move you into #9/8, fight for the inside.

Take the inside lane again going into Hammerhead which will move you up to #8/7.

Gun it at @ the followthrough and maintain your position. Be careful heading into turn 6 because the other vans brake early and you will bump into them if you are not careful. You want to brake as late as possible.

After Gambon you should be placed around 5/6th. At that point it should be easy for you to get gold.

Yea thats pretty much how I did it, just to add...

when you do get the lead, make sure you slow for the corners, 2nd might be using your slipstream to bare down on you but if you go just slightly wide at gambon - it will only end in heartbreak.

Also be extra careful not to cut corners - that only works if your billie piper.

Yesterday I had huge problems with the van challenge but today I found out you needed gold to unlock the track in arcade so I thought I could try one more time...


...And I made it on my first attempt! :) Passed no. 1 on the followthrough (he did run into me and almost pushing me off the track but he crashed into the tires... brakes? what is that?)

Yeah, the AI in the samba challenge is very scripted feeling. They stick to the line as much as possible and usually act as if though you're not there and try to run through you to get back into the line. It gets annoying when they cause you to fail the challenge over and over. Either way, getting GOLD unlocked the track so I'm happy.
 
I managed to do the VW top gear challenge on my own merit (all aids off, skid controll off) but that lotus challenge - Jesus! I could only get bronze. Just golded it now, with all aids on. Prior to turning aids on, I found changing the rear brake force down to 2 helped stop the back end sliding out when braking - for anyone who attempts to gold it without driving aids.

But so far, award for worst driving AI in any GT event goes to top gear special stages.
 
The challenges were a bit annyoing, you really have to grapple the Lotus but once you learn it, pretty fun. Golded both so far.

The track itself, as an avid follower of Top Gear, is superb, really enjoying it. 1:18.2 is my quickest so far in a race modified Impreza '05 with 345bhp, quick car.
 
Quite interested to find out what people from all the various countries think about the track, I know Top Gear isn't aired everywhere so is there anyone who's first experiance of the track was in GT5?
 
I am almost at my wits end with this. I've tried every attempt to win the Van race and end up about 7th. In the Elise I was 5th just now and coming out of the Followthrough I went off.

If you get gold in the Elise race can you unlock it or just the Van one.

Did you also do the Lotus Elise 111R after that? The van race was annoying, the lotus even more!!! every time I got disqualified because the opponents bumps me of the road from behind :banghead:

I hadn't experienced the track until GT5. I didn't even realize we could get Top Gear in Canada until today. I never have looked at BBC Canada. I'm going to start watching it now that I know where to find it.

I won the van race on the first try, but I can't do better than 5th in the Lotus. I tried for almost two hours earlier. On problem is a lot of the sections are too narrow and it's hard to get by, the other is the car is too squirly. I never liked the Elise.
 
The van race reminded me of any race the TG lads do with the touring car drivers.... starts out all polite then descends into mayhem!
Ended my final attempt going into Gambon sideways being shoved along by two other vans! Awesomely funny.
 
THIS IS THE STUPIDIEST %*@! SPECIAL EVENT THAT IS $*!@ IMPOSSIBLE TO GET GOLD IN! WHY DO YOU HAVE TO GET A GOLD TO UNLOCK THIS TRACK?!

How do they expect everyone to do this STUPID %!$@ race and not want to break their GT5 game disc in half...

Thanks a lot for all the tips, I finally got the gold with the Elise after at least a couple hundred tries (I suck)! These event are really lame and scripted as hell, you have to know what cars you need to pass at each turn and retry until you do so. I think I'm gonna buy a brand new Elise and smash it over and over just for the sake of it now.
 
After all the crazyness of the com opponents screwing me over, I got it. I tried it a bit in Arcade with my kart, and it's a pretty fun track when karts are racing on it.
 
I managed to get gold with the van, but that Elise is a PITA. The best I managed so far is 5th... What if people can't get gold in it, does that mean they can't get the TG track? If thats the case, that was a horrible decision, because both of those events are horses**t...

WTH are you talking about? Can't you drive at all?
If you can't, then maybe you should use driving aids. 👍
 
I just did the Sambabus race and that was the most boring thing I think I ever did in my entire life! And for some reason the buses behind me attacked me viciously! As soon as I passed them some would drive into my bus and constantly try to drive me off course like they're insane! I'm serious, it wasn't bumping but attacking. Anyway I made it through this dull race and finished at 6th place and told myself, "I'm NEVER doing that again." And now you're telling me I have to get gold in all of them for the track to be accessible? That's crazy! Is that the same for the 'ring as well, the full version?
