Top Gear Test Track in Gran Turismo 5!

This test was not fair. Clarkson had put R3 tires on NSX in GT4 and had S1 or S2 in real life. At least 7-10 seconds of the difference was due to this. The rest was due to the fear for one's life that Jeremy should have, especially in Laguna Seca...

seven seconds is the difference between a cobalt SS and a mercedes SLS. the tires have very little to do with it, it has to do with GT4's physics. the game had different braking zones than the real track, and 7-10 seconds of the lap had to do with that. the rest of it can be associated with actual fear and other real-world factors, but, quite simply, the NSX is incapable of that lap time in real life, at least in the hands of an amateur driver.

the way ppl are complaining you would think you had to come 1st on the 1st lap, was in 5th at the end of the first lap then realized , one more lap!, its easy got it on my 3rd try... the vw challenge that is

I have to admit I cheated a little on the first challenge to get gold, I noticed it doesn't DQ you when you drive along the brake markers before Hammerhead. I made up so many places doing that, as well as not braking for Chicago, it's unnecessary.

In hindsight the buses was not that bad after you've done the Lotus!

I pride myself in completing things without driving aids but for the Lotus challenge I had to do it that thing is impossible to drive. I understand its the tires but if it were real life those tires can't possibly be street legal!

Its funny, because the Lotus would be the last car I would think to drive like that.

I wonder what Colin Chapman would say if he played that challenge.

first he would say
"rear sway bar is too stiff and the front end is overdamped"

then once you tell him that it's effectively got the tires from a prius he will respond
"easy fix, change the bloody tires! then it will be brilliant."

:-P

I just hate those cones littering the track!
Sure they tell players unfamiliar with the track where to go, but on the other hand, you should be able to "turn them off" and still keep it so that if the driver does not stay within the actual course their laptime is invalid.

Lol...Amen to the cones! I think they're a nuisance, and very confusing after a couple laps with the AI have knocked them all over the track.

I even had an instance where I bumped one in my Elise and it popped the front end up in the air a few feet...I didn't even know that was possible!

I finally got gold in the Samba bus race. Haven't tried the Elise one yet.
Here's a breakdown of how I did it, as detailed as I can remember for those who are having trouble:

Shift points are:
3rd - 32-33mph
4th - 51-52mph
This is important because if you miss a shift or short shift, you'll fall behind and miss your chance to pass.

Start Lap 1 - Hit 3rd and then 4th gear, slide in behind the blue van asap.

First corner - brake down to 45-48mph, shift into 3rd while braking, make the right. You should be right up the first guy's trumpet.

Into Chicago - the first guy will brake hard. Don't. Go to his left, pass him, the next guy, then swerve right, cut inside and pass the third guy before the tires in Chicago. Stay in 3rd the whole time. If you've done it right, you ease in behind the yellow van on the exit.

Stay on the yellow van for a bit, get right on his butt for the straight leading up to Hammerhead. He may duck left. If he does, slide past him and in behind the gray van. If not, try to slingshot past him in the straight using the slipstream.

Hammerhead - Late brake, shift down to third on the left hander, be on the right side. You should go into this corner 2 up with the gray van. Shift down to 2nd just before the right hander, punch it. If you managed the slipstream right on the straight leading up to the corner, you'll be behind a blue and a turquoise van now. They'll stay 2 up all the way through Bentley.

Bentley - Can't really pass anyone here, but get as close as you can to either the blue or turquoise van.

Follow Through - You should be able to get into the blue van's slip stream and shoot past him and the turquoise van.

Bachrach - You can late brake into this one but be careful. It's a downshift into third but you almost don't have to do that till you get around it. Just watch you don't slide too much. If you missed the slipstream on the follow through, you can make up some ground here. I can usually pass between 1-3 vans here depending on who's there.

Gambon - Tough to pass, but downshift into 2nd if you fall below 35 and punch it. You won't win across the line, but neck and neck you'll have the better line down the straight if you're on the left.

Lap 2: Things get a little frenzied here. Just stay cool and keep on your line. By now you should be between 5th and 7th place.

Follow the same directions for where to pass as the first lap. If you play it right, you'll be in second place by Hammerhead. That leaves you plenty of time to catch up and draft the first place van. I shot by him at the midpoint of the follow through, but YMMV.

-Where to cut the corners-
This challenge is exceptionally cheesy with where the corners are and where you can and can't cut them. Some places are very strict and some don't mind at all.

Chicago - You can cut a cone-width on the left of the left hand lead-in. Before the right hander, you can go as wide right as you want, as long as you make it back in before the tires. Chicago itself is pretty strict.

Hammerhead - Don't go too wide left or right on the straight up to the corner. Too far left and you can't get back in to make the corner, and too far right and you'll hit a distance marker.
As you enter the corner, you can cut the left hander a bit wide, as long as you make it on the left of the flat marker in the ground at the apex. Past here, keep it in the lines.

Bentley - Don't cut this at all. Tempting, but don't.

Follow through - the cones will slow you down, so don't hit them. On the left bend you can nip the cone in the grass but don't push it.

Bachrach - You can't cut the inside but you can hit the grass on the exit. Don't do this though, because all your passing chances will be on the inside.

Gambon - You can't cut the inside, despite the tire tracks tempting you. You can squeak on the outside of the paint lines if you must, but keep it clean across the line.

That's about all I've got for now. I did the challenge with nothing but ABS turned up, and the racing line on (though after a couple hours on the track, I really didn't need it anymore). Hope this helps!

Is it me or did they take a potentially AWESOME idea and ruin it? TGTT would have be so much more of a track if they treated it like it is in real life. No flying laps, and no restrictions. Open runway to DRIVE and TEST our cars.

Golded the samba buses!

I didn't use anybody's directions, very much- there's a guy on Youtube who passes the first bus in the first corner and I couldn't do that. But the concepts to keep in mind are: momentum, and running wide and braking late. Anytime you can swing wide and sort of weave through a cluster of buses trying to keep their line, it's a big deal. I had the lead by .625 seconds all through just keeping momentum...

Managed to gold the Samba buses but the Elise test is frustrating as hell. Even with TC at 10 and ASM on I just can't get higher than about 8th. With them down/off I silde all over the shop.

I thought the Elise was meant to be a good handling car in real life? PD has made a hash of the Elise if the car doesn't really slide about so much as it does in the game :grumpy:

The Elise has been fitted with comfort hard tyres in that challenge... Worst tyres in the game, capable of ruining any performance car handling.

Also, if you've tried the test track in practice mode (after unlocking it of course) you will know that the track itself is rather slippery, so that accentuates the lack of grip on the Lotuses nicely.

Believe me, fit something like race mediums to the Elise and it'll be a pleasure to drive....

As many have mentioned, Skid Recovery Force is definitely the way to go for this challenge. Managed to get up to around 3rd but I'm still having to retry so many times either because of the BS course limits (you can be inside the cones on a corner and get disqualified) and the AI ploughing into the back of you every so often (which would, of course, get you disqualified).

I tried so many times. Had the lead into Gambon on lap 2 and came out too slow and lost by.022. Damn!
