true, by that tyme your autos scrap mental

firstly, this is a thread about top speed in a car, the debate about whether racing/driving fast on streets is good/bad has already taken place in this thread: here mazkid i suggest u go there. its long but well worth a read, might help change ur attitude.

though i also agree with liquid yellow,

whats up with that?

ummm advanR, you have a m8 with a clk-gtr???????? i am SOOOOOOOOOOO jealous now heh.

as for:

its just like fp said:

there are large areas on the autobahn where the speed limit is taken down to 120kph etc, its not all unlimited. and they are very strict about keeping the speeds low in those sections.

Yes I know, was just showing an example...

4. 82 mph on highway to highway transition ramp

That's about it...
Sounds like my mother when I was first driving on the highway. 80mph was acceptable, 85 wasn't. Go figure.

I managed to floor my '88 Accord LX to the amazing speed of 121mph once. It was about 9pm, on a limited-access highway that wasn't used very much at the time (I passed no cars on that 5-mile stretch, that's how isolated it was).

My record is 138mph in a '90 Eagle Talon TSi. I owned the car about 2 months, and did it on the same road (other direction). I passed one car on the same 5-mile stretch), and felt the road became increasingly narrower with each 2-3mph. The one car I passed was going about 60mph, and was thankfully in the right lane.

Nowadays, that road is much more heavily traveled, and I don't drive like that anymore. I did 102mph in the Neon once; that's only because I was driving on Florida's Turnpike (figure on 40-50 miles between exits at some points), en route to see my dying grandfather; and nudged 90 in the CR-V, about 83 in the Corolla last week.

Honestly, unless I'm on a racetrack or running for my life, I won't drive like that ever again. I was younger, and not wiser. I felt I was indestructable then, now I realise I am not.

Are you talking about US 27 by any chance?

hey fp, i wasn't having a go at you, in fact quite the opposite, i was hilighting that you were right.

i also find it interesting that most of the people listing their top speeds here have enough time at their top speed to look at the speedo and discern the EXACT speed they reached. im not aware of too many of the cars listed having digital odometers, im assuming most are analog. im guilty of that too though heh. at speeds of over 130mph u should really have ur eyes on the road most of the time. though i don't even have both my hands on the wheel until i reach 100.......

paul

I was only stating that I was showing an example. I didnt mean to give oyu the idea that I thought you were having a go at me :). Even if there was a Digital Speedo, the numbers on most cars would be moving too fast to see what it is at. If its analog, you have to make an assumption when you glance at the speedo...

No, but it's a close second place for open road asphalt attacks. That would be another 40-mile stretch, in any case.

Sawgrass Expressway (a.k.a. Haul-Ass Expressway), if you must know...

Aligator Alley is quite a fun stretch too. On our way to Key West in 2000 in the MPV with my uncle and all of us and most of our stuff(we had stayed for a week with my mom's sis and uncle at thier nice place in Bonita Springs, and we would return there after Key West), and my dad playing around again passed a simi and just kept it floored for a bit and acted like he passed out(not like over the wheel, he just had his head back but was still watching the road), and we did like 95-100(we didn't have the roof top carrier at the time. It creates too much drag(thus why trying to go the same speed or more with it, the trans starts to heat up)), and there was barely anyone on the road, so we stayed cruising(using the cruise as I mentioned in one of my other posts) at about 91mph for a while, and we had several cars flying past us.

Highspeed stuff(like open road highspeed) doesn't scare me...I was more on edge when we were going 40mph over bridges with ice on the road and the Probe acting like a ski ride or something.

There's a lot of 2 lane highways outside of STL that are great for higher speed cruising.

I am quite familiar with that road to tell the truth. 707. I miss South Florida, you don't understand, being landlocked here in Orlando sucks. BTW, the Ramp off 595 onto I 75 south was where I got the civic to bury the needle. :). I used to race out on 27 when I was younger, that is why I asked.

Yea, that clk-gtr was damn fast. Driving it was comparable to riding in my uncles f-18 super hornet.

now ur just talking **** advanR, who on earth is allowed to buy an F18? no matter how much money u have i doubt the military would let that happen...

i also agree with tsleng, clk-gtr rulez, no muscle car could compete with it, unless it had nos perhaps. btw check out www.carclassic.com they have a clkgtr roadster for sale. costs 50% more than the original but its convertible! :D rofl

paul

Yeah, a Muscle car that is for the streets vevrsus that CLK, there is no match, pit that CLK up against the Saleen S7 and we'll se if muscle can power it out. I have a feeling that Saleen would walk all over that CLK. So, muscle car needing NOS, I think not.
