Touring Car discussion - WTCC, BTCC etcTouring Cars

I've never met someone from outside Australia (and New Zealand, I guess) who hasn't said that or similar.

We must be doing something right.
I get the highlights on Motors TV. I love how it's usually laid back, with the guy in the pits seemingly given free reign to go anywhere, and I love how everyone has a nickname. Frosty Winterbottom is the best nickname of ever. I also like how it is (usually) clean racing with such big cars on somewhat tight circuits.

Mentioning laid back and all access. Check this. Dig the lack of safety for EVERYONE!

And this one for distracting racers.

Larkham, Skaife and Crompton are all former racers, so they all on good terms with the teams.

Aka Larko, Skaifey and Crompo.

In Adelaide, Larko was up in the starting gantry while the race was started. I've never seen that before.

That's pretty much par for the course. I suppose it makes up for the amount of grief he gets from the others. Once he was explaining the changes to the brakes under COTF regulations, but put a brake pad in upside down. It was the first thing the others picked up on, and naturally, everyone took their turn. He might be retired, but he's still the unluckiest man in motorsports.

But even I'm surprised at the way the commentators can interrupt post-race debriefings for interviews. The teams don't seem to mind at all.

Hello fellow race fans...

I've been a long supporter of BTCC and always tried to catch races at Thruxton when they're on. I now live in Munich with the missus and want to watch some racing, so I thought WTCC at Salzburg Ring in Austria would be closest and cheapest.

How is the WTCC championship... is it similar to BTCC in terms of relatively equal, close pack racing? I love the wheel to wheel racing and overtaking of BTCC and want to see something similar :D

It seems WTCC is, to be honest, poorly marketed. I couldn't find anything about what support races follow the championship... anyone know?

Any advice, knowledge or anything on WTCC?

I watch the WTCC on TV and while the venues are good and the cars (roughly) similar to the BTCC the grids are these days a lot smaller (now that the BTCC is back up to full 32 car grids) and as a rest the racing loses a littel.

Still worth a look live I would suggest, however I would agree that its very poorly marketed.

Stick with the BTCC. The WTCC is little more than a marketing exercise for manufacturers, and the series has struggled with poor circuit choices (like Monza, which isn't suited to touring cars) and a race format that is too short for actual racing to take place. The BTCC is far more competitive, and far more diverse.

If you're looking for a new series to get involved in and aren't already familiar with it, I strongly recommended you look into V8 Supercars. It's unlikely that you'll be able to watch a race in person, unless you're willing to fly out to Australia or New Zealand, but they're worth watching. Pukekohe is on this weekend, which is a fantastic little sprint circuit which is as bumpy as it is fast. In today's race, the top twenty drivers were covered by less than a second in qualifying, and while it's not always easy to pass, the cars are big and designed to tolerate wheel-to-wheel racing - unlike the WTCC cars, which tend to break if you look at them funny.

Cheers... I seen a fair bit of V8 Supercars on Motors TV and agree, it's a great championship with some amazing tracks.

I was wanted to go see some racing in person though, I love sitting in general admission with a few beers, a picnic and just enjoying the sun :D Unfortunately, there aren't really any tracks near Munich (I want to go and come back in the same day) and the only event which was DTM in Olympia park was cancelled this year :(

Shame really, seems north Germany gets the share of races!

Avoid WTCC like the plague. It makes a mockery of not only touring cars, but motorsport. The organisation, structure, marketing, competition, grids, driving standards... it's all way off. Especially for what should fly the world flag for touring cars.

BTCC is near as can be perfect at the minute. In my opinion, it's the best race series in the world.

I honestly don't mind WTCC, it can occasionally bring some great racing, but BTCC beats it hands down.

Speaking of WTCC, here are the races from Paul Ricard if anyone's interested:

Oh, and also the cars are ruined this year. It looks like somebody saw a GT1 car, said "Yes, I want that in my life", then applied £60 worth of cheap flimsy decking onto their Honda in a desperate attempt at an aero kit.

I do. Doesn't touch me in the same way as BTCC does though.

Touch my motorsporty car soul thing.

Nowhere else

Is the weekend for the Norisring races no good for you? Nuremburg is an hour and a half away from you by train or by car. Good opportunity to see DTM, the F3 euroseries, Carrera Cup and last year they had a historic car race, though I'm not sure if there will be one this year.

Both V8 Supercars and BTCC are providing great races so far. Im giving the WTCC some time as the teams are getting to grips to the new regs.

Cool, completely forgot Norisring was in Nuremberg... only an hour and half from me too.

Will look into that asap, seems DTM goes there in June. Appears to be a grandstand only circuit, as opposed to general admission, but I guess that's expected from a street circuit.

Nostalgia trip... last ever DTM race I saw live was at the now banned Avus ring in Berlin. We were sat in the crowd where (i forget his name)'s Opel Kalibra rear ended the barriers and exploded in a fireball. Everyone thought he was dead.

Hollaback. Thought this might be of mild interest to some people. Had an email through at work about sponsoring the BTCC in 2015.

Why the BTCC?

The British Touring Car Championship is the pinnicle of British Motorsport and offers the best all-round package for commercial advertising and of course, high-octane thrilling racing!

The series is broadcast live, nationally to 23 million viewers, over 229 hours. As a sponsor this provides unpresidented coverage for your brand at a fraction of the cost of TV advertising. In addition, predicted trackside audiences are expected to exceed 500,000 in 2014 and 2015

"The advertising space on the front or side of a BTCC car carries an awful lot of weight...We believe the return on investment is two or three fold, without a shadow of a doubt."
Simon Knight, UK Field Sales Director, Wrigley

Call [number removed] to arrange a meeting with Andy Wilmot himself, or ask for more information on his available packages. Be quick - sponsorship on the car is limited.

Sounds like a pipe dream to me - a last-ditch effort to give the series credibility. You know it's bad when the "World" championship is upstaged by half a dozen domestic series. I'm sure we'd all prefer to see the BTCC, V8 Supercars, DTM and EuroV8 before the WTCC.
