I would look for somewhere with more open oases. That place only has two and by the time you get to be able to annex one you'll have to steal from someone else.

It's not about doing ok or not, it's about fun. To me Travian is a war game, and what I like the most is attacking other people or helping some alliance member out. But of course if sim city is what you like to do, than that's what you should do.

And raiding helps a lot to gather resources quickly, togheter with a good resource production.
