Then it was Anelka who stood up to take the penalty, and everyone thought he would just score just like everyone else did..... but when he took the shot, somehow and I mean SOMEHOW, Van Der Sar went the right way and blocked the shot!!!!

Excellent game, and I'm glad Man U won, but feel sorry for Terry and even Anelka... a massive blow for them, to have the responsibility for losing the trophy on the strength of one kick of a ball... :ill:

Did anyone else notice Van Der Sar's slight gamesmanship, however? I certainly did. As Anelka lined up to take his shot, he clearly points to his left, which I immediately construed as an attempt to influence Anelka's choice of shot... Someone's been watching too much Derren Brown, methinks, but hell, it worked. My money is on the fact that VDS deliberately tried to influence/trick Anelka into shooting to the right.... VDS had nothing to lose by using the trick, but it turned out to be the most crucial moment of the game.

It was a great game to watch, finals can go either way - sometimes you get plenty of attacking action and sometimes you get a defensive stalemate. Thankfully this was the former.

As for the result, i wanted both sides to loose. ;)

Does anyone know if Ronaldo has a place in Portugal's diving squad in this Summer's Beijing Olympics?

You just knew an Englishman was going to miss.

I guess we all knew. I also knew Ballack and Hargreaves would kick a penalty a penalty and succeed. They both played very well yesterday.

Ronaldo should learn the penalty rules by the way. He is not allowed to stop the movement. He did that yesterday and recently in the Premier League.

That's what i thought! I guess if he had scored the ref would have made him take it again.

I was under the impression that once you have started your run up, you are not allowed to stop.

Yeah I don't think you can stop, there's nothing to say you can't slow down and speed up but he stopped completley. He missed anyway so it doesn't matter but it'd be interesting to have seen if the ref made him re-take it had it gone in. Well, the day after and I'm still thrilled, it was a hell of a final.

It made him look stupid, that's punishment enough isn't it? Still can't blame Ronaldo, without him United would have neither trophy this season.

Best in the world.

Absolutely, there is no reason he doesn't deserve World Player of the Year for this season, certainly not European Player of the Year. He's performed well on big occasions a few times this season, won the Golden Boot, PFA Footballer of the year, scored the most goals in the Champions league, beas Bests record for goals scored in a season by a midfielder. He's been phenominal.

This was the first Champs League game to be broadcasted in HD ? Its the first one ive noticed that was in HD ...

Isn't It funny that when Mourinho is no longer there Chelsea makes it to the Finals , lol.

I pretty sure your not allowed to stop when running towards the ball for the penality, for that matter you could stop, see the goal keeper dive, then kick it... was really surprising that he stopped.... I was like hes going to mess it up now and he did!

Was an excellent match!

Crunch time for Benitez tonight, but he has taken the initiative and hit out at his recent critics by reiterating what a job he's done for Liverpool in his reign at the club... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/7932406.stm

It is pretty shocking that there is a definite feeling that his job is on the line, when a) they're still in with a chance of another CL win and b) he's virtually guaranteed CL qualification for next year already...

It seems that one price of success is that the fans and the boards are greedy and expect nothing less from you in the future. The fact that Rafa is doing as well as he has done in previous years, however, seems at odds with the sentiment that his job could be at stake if his team fail to progress tonight...

Yeah, I think it's messed up. It's not isolated to the EPL though. We're getting that in the NFL too.

I think the biggest complaint is how the Premiership has been going or them. I think they're quite bitter about the success Man Utd are having in it and at one point this season actually thought they could win it.

Great performance, Mascherano played especially brilliant. Even more so than usual.

Good stuff 👍

Yep, I was very impressed - although both of the first two goals had question marks over them (especially the penalty!), Liverpool were still by far the best team... even Torres was tracking back and attacking every ball as if his life depended on it. Gerrard was awesome again, and the last goal was pretty sweet too...

Liverpool played very well until they decided to sit back on thier lead. I mean it was a lead you can afford to sit back. I was suprised at how easy Real Madrid wen't down though, they didn't seem to have any fight or any real idea of what to do. Liverpool played well, Gerrard was his usual self and had a very good game. Mascherano played well but he realy needs to lear to shut up, he got himself sent off against us last year because of his big gob and a differen referee might have booked him a second time for his constant mouthing at the ref in the first half. Despite Liverpools performance though Real Madrid were rubbish. There was only Sniejder who looked like he was up for it andeven he looked like he'd gone mentally in the last 15 mins. The first goal was not a foul, no close imo. You do tend to see them given a lot though because it's the safe thing for the ref to do, but that goal should have stood. The penalty was harsh, very harsh. I don't beleive that should have been gien. But at the same time, looking at both legs Liverpool deserved to go though regardless and by a very long margin.

I'm looking forward to the game tomorrow, I can't see Inter scoring unless it's a goal from nothing. We'll have to be ready for them to have a good game though just in case. Nothing is in the bag and goals can come from nothing so we'll need to be alert and hopefully go in at half time with a goal or two lead.

My money is on tomorrow being a similar affair to the Liverpool game tonight, and once again, English clubs will dominate the last 8 of the CL... will be watching the game in the pub, so regardless of the outcome, I hope it's a cracker!

I'm now concerned about our trip to old trafford this weekend :nervous:

You should be up for it at least. I think it will be a good game because it's rare for us not to play to win and you guys need to win. A draw does us a lot more good than it does you, but we don't often play for a draw. We're playing a lot better now than we were when we went to Anfield though, our season hadn't started then. It could go either way but Benitez has a habit of playing not to lose in the league far too muchand it has cost you dearly points wise. You've been getting too many draws and playing like you do in thoes games against us when were in form will lose you the game imo. It will depend on how Benitez organises the tactics on the day, if you attack us you have more of a chance than if you try to simply stop us scoring.

People go on about our defesive record we have this season, it is good but at the same time we're one of the side that teams park the bus against the most. Yes we have a world class defence and yes Ferdinand and Vidic are among the best in the world, but teams certainly arn't going to score against us if they keep everyone behind the ball. The fact we keep scoring against teams that do that should at least tell them that they have noting to lose. Look at Hull when they played us, Derby, Newcastle had a go. We beat Derby two out of three times and we beat Newcastle and Hull, but they all caused a scare and yet none are big threats in teamrs of having great squads and competing for trophies and honours. Yes if teams open up against us they are leaving holes we can exploit, but we're exlpoiting holes anyway, we're beating teams anyway and with that in mind there best chance of causing an upset is to try and beat us at our own game.

Premier league football is part skill and majority mental. If you can rush the opposition, if you canclose them down, give them no time on the ball and push them back it doesn't matter if you don't have the skill on the ball. If you press them more than they're pressing you it doesn't matter if it's Derby v United, Burnley v Arsenal or whoever, you're giving youself the best chance you can.

Look at Liverpool tonight, now really I do think Liverpool are a better team than Real Madrid right now, but the principals were there. Liverpool closed down, they pushed Real back and they didn't give Real players any time on the ball. Time and again you see smaller teams doing this to Pemier League clubs and not all the time, but sometimes you see it paying off. So why can't Premier league teams do it. That baffles me sometimes.

But anyway, I think Inter will be out of sorts tomorrow. Before the last leg the players and Jose were all talking about being hyped up for it and having the belief that theycan win and what happened. They were lucky we ddin't score. I can't see them turning it on tomorrow. I can see the possibility of an upset, but not by being outplayed.
