The Twingo's "flight" into the sea didn't look real to me. I think some digital trickery was used for that part at least.

I'd be first to agree that what TG did to that Twingo was a waste and not even particularly entertaining. But JC did give it quite the shining review and in Renault's eyes I would guess that the cost of losing one car is a small price to pay for the positive publicity it received in return.

I know what you mean, but it's not really the same as when they carried out a crash test with the Megane in an early series. That had a point, wheras destroying the Twingo (if they did and it wasn't digitally enhanced like Daan mentions) had absolutely no point whatsoever beyond just being destructive for no reason, a bit like the Dacia Sandero stunt.

Fred - I know what you mean, and if that was the case then it makes the whole thing a little better, but no less pointless. I know about cars being lent out for projects too - as far as I'm aware a number of car companies actually give tuners money to do their best for big shows like SEMA, as long as the car is crushed afterwards. I know that a few tuners actually decline and pay for the car and tuning themselves just so they can keep it afterwards.

I'd say the flight was most definitely digitally adapted. Can you imagine them being able to do that under H&S? No.

I find that whole thing about SUVs completely pointless. I'd rather buy a Mitsubishi Evo than a Range Rover.

Wow man, really? That has got to be the stupidest thing I've read in a long time. And what if you wanted a family car that was easy to drive, safe, comfortable that could carry several people and their luggage? The two cars do very different things.

Thats like saying "this 430 test is pointless - I'd much rather buy a Civic", or to a more accurate extent "this cooking show is pointless - I'd much rather go hiking".

See, I'd have said the same thing, but...

That picture turned up in the press back in October (i.e it's not simply a screenshot)

Hm, firstly taking into what Jondot said secondly although a stunt, when the car was fired over the edge you see a area of smoke around the back of the car which leds me to think they used one of their old friends...

They used this for Black Stig's death too, firing the Jaaaag off the edge of the aircraft carrier.

...which adds up, because here's a shot of the Twingo parked suspiciously close to what looks like one of Bickers Action's cannon lorry things (who were behind the car darts, above).

Why are so many people gettin ben t out of shape about a Twingo? Yeah it's a prety neat car but it's nothing special. It's not a colelctors item or a rare car or anything special in any way. It's no different, actually if anything it's worse than there constant destuction of Morris Marinas beacuse at least the Twino is in mass production at the moment.

Besides that, a bit of logical thought tells you that it's highly unlikely that it's a new production model that's been either bought by the BBC, bought by Clarkson or another member of the TopGear crew, or given to then to destroy by Renault. It's either a crash test car that's not been needed or it's a pre-production car like the usually give to journalists that would have been destroyed or parked in a lockup for years and probably destroyed after that anyway.

I do think that this episode is the weakest of the series so far, but seeing everyone up in arms about a destroyed Twingo just seems odd to me whe n they've destroyed plenty or other cars on the show and on Clarksons DVD's for little reason beyond entertainment.

Probably because we're getting tired of seeing the same things over and over again. Yeah, Top Gear is funny because they destroy stuff and make jokes about it, but that was several seasons ago. For many seasons the same has been done over and over again, it's just not fun anymore. The X5-Q7-Range Rover was a decent review, so why couldn't he have done the same with the Twingo?

If they really can't be bothered with decent car reviews anymore they need to do more specials. The Vietnam special and the American road trip special were very good and I had a great time watching those. Especially the Vietnam special was some of Top Gear's finest.

Exactly, it's just an overplayed joke that's getting very tiresome. It's not annoying simply because they've destroyed a Twingo, but because there was no reason put forward for doing so (if he'd hated it or something then I'd be more understanding) and it seemed very much like a half-assed attempt at an ending. 'Hmm, so how can we end this feature?' 'Oh I dunno, just lob it in the sea.'

Death to all FWD hatchbacks! I'm a license fee payer, even if they paid full retail for this car (the Twingo) I'd rather they trashed one per episode than 1p of the license fee go towards paying Eastenders wage bill each week!

Top Gear is only ever going to be more of the same.. except now the novelty is wearing off, it's a formula that might not last much longer.

I for one probaby wouldnt watch it if it became boring car car reviews.. if I was in the market for a dull as dishwater 1.6lx Focus, I wouldn't wait for TG to review it, I'd go and test drive it myself, I categorically do not need to see somebody on TV giving me their opinion on it... an X5M, I'm never going to be able to get behind the wheel of, let-alone, slide it round a wet airfield track.. I want to see intersting stuff on TG, the fact the it's scripting has become more evident is a shame, the fact that it can no longer be original because its already done it all before is a shame.. but it's still entertaining, and it's still the only thing on TV that makes me laugh out loud...

It wasn't a great episode but not bad, I just think that there isn't much featured anymore, I guess there hasn't been any really exciting cars out for a while which doesn't help.

Agree with the same jokes being re-used as wearing a little thin. Still makes me laugh especially when Ross Kemp was actually in the boot when Clarkson opened it

I'm gonna go on a limb and say that was a pre-production prototype used as a press car, and if things in Europe are like in North America, it would have been crushed anyway, seeing how it's a prototype, which means it doesn't have a VIN number and therefore cannot be registered.

We have a winner! The Twingo was indeed a pre-pro proto than would have otherwise been crushed!

Please never link to the Daily Fail again

That is a very suspect looking Twingo there

Looks like a 206.

Nnnno. It's definitely a Twingo.

Of course it's not a collectors car at the moment. But if you had that cavelier attitude about something not particularly special fifty years ago, like, I dunno, an MGA, then down the line it starts looking a lot more irresponsible. And given that you've drawn the comparison with the Marina, you obviously understand that the worth of something increases the fewer of them there are about. Watch the same segment in forty years when there are barely any Twingo RSs (especially Cup packages) left and tell me you don't cringe seeing a perfectly good one get destroyed... Or maybe they should just kill off a few more Mk1 Golf GTIs or Clio Williams? After all, they made loads of those...

I agree. It probably was a pre-production example. But I can't say I'm over-enamoured when TG destroy any car really, even the Dacia from the first episode this series. It just seemed completely unnecessary. Now caravans, on the other hand...

Death to all FWD hatchbacks!

Might be worth noting that the sequence was filmed in October and the Twingo Jeremy was actually driving is still taxed.

Although it's still the most entertaining car programme (or is it?) around, I think the last two seasons of Top Gear can be summed up by one word - trite.

Interesting also to note that they used different Twingos in the sequence - the one that Jeremy road tested and then smashed up was registered HY58 UWS, but the one he slid around the ice rink had the plate HY58 VAJ. The car they rolled in the tunnel was too dark during the actual roll itself, and the one they launched into the sea was too far away to tell.

I can make out HY58UW on the Faily Wail picture:

And both are still taxed :D

Does anyone remember the episode when the Stig drove a Twingo around the track? It was the episode where they had to buy a rear wheel drive car, Clarkson had the Porsche, May had the Capri & Hammond had the 300ZX. The Twingo in that episode was red and had the number plate HY58.

Thats funny...that episode is on Dave at the moment. But I didn't pay attention to the plate on the Twingo.

So, previously, we were all thinking Mark T is some kind of Mr Memory Man, but it turns out all he is doing is watching it right now... :dopey:

Just to let you guys know, though some of you might have read it in ur Xmas TV guides, the next top gear will road test the new Noble M600, oh happy days

Yep, just saw the episode on Dave. When I saw the Twingo I was hitting pause on my controller even though I don't have Sky +. :)

Think the last three letters were VAP.

Edit: Just saw that the Twingo in the last episode ended in UWS.
