Just heard on the 10 o'clock news.

Hope he pulls through, my thoughts go to his wife, kids and the rest of his family.

Ps. Thanks to the moderator that edited the title 👍

Oh wow...

I wonder if he'll be operational for the start of the Top Gear season. My illegal downloads would be so different and less entertaining without him!

Gosh I just saw this on the ten o'clock news...... I turned to it half way through the story so at first I thought he was dead....... I was horrified!.. but luckily he is alive but its not laughing matter..... he was taken to the nearest special neurological unit hospital showing how severe the accident was, apparently he was trapped in the wreakage. He is now a critical condition and he could have permanent injuries..... Gosh I really love top gear but if the stunts are getting more and more over the top I really hope they know where the limit is...

...For once I hope Clarkson doesnt make fun of him and this when he recovers... If it was Clarkson doing the stunt and he is quite abit older and more out of shape..... jeez he could have maybe died..... makes you think...

My thoughts go out to him and his family..... really I hope he's ok... He is a really great genuine nice guy...

Of course Jeremy is going to mock Richard for this when he come out of hospital! Jeremy will probably say that Richards teeth were too white and reflected the suns rays onto the windscreen causing Richard to be blinded, thus making him crash.

I hope the guy makes it though, crashing at 280mph must have been insane. Id hate to have a crash at 100mph let alone nearly triple that.

Spec....

I'm pretty sure I've been to that airfield aswell. It's the home of the North Yorkshire Air Museum.

When I was there I don't remember the runway being in very good form, definetley not high speed safe IMO.

Just heard some live updated news on ITV about it..... They were doing a speed record attempt and Hammond had already broke it..... but they did another run to gather more footage for the show... on that final run the paracute to slow the car down did open... but suddenly the car veered off the runway and crashed .....because it doesnt have a roof you can imagine what it feels like to hit the ground with you head at 280! It took the fire service 10 mins to cut him out, he was unconscious when they got him out but he regained consciousness briefly in the air ambulance (hopefully a good sign).....now he is still critical, doctors are with him now, also his family and some Top Gear people (i.e. clarkson and may probably).....

Thats the latest.....

Robin

Actually, thinking about it now I bet it was the poor surface quality of tarmac that did it...any small kink or bump in the surface could have done it. Such attempts really shouldnt be done on such small airfields... It should be on a properly built dragster track or special surface...

I've just been told by a friend he's now "stable"

Thanks for that.. Just saw the update in the thread title after a misbehaving XP..

My thoughts are with the Hamster at the moment.. One of the Good Guys in my book..

No roof? What the hell was he driving?

Get well soon Hamster!

one of this. on paper, this can do 370mph.

Elvington has been used previously for British Land Speed records and the current record was set there, so it is suitable for the run.

However any activity of this nature is obviously dangerous in nature, the link below has some more info on the current record, the Vampire jet car that Richard was running in and the history of the British Land Speed record.

A roof isn't exactley great protection from a crash like this, he had a roll cage and with or without the roof the roll cage is the part that will save you.

Nooooooooo! :guilty:

Hope he gets well soon, Top Gear wouldn't be the same without him. My thoughts go to him and family/friends. I've been to Elvington numerous times, I can't say I remember the runways being particually good quality. Still I can't imagine they'd do it if it wasn't up to scratch.

His VW Camper canal boat was awesome :D

Blimey, Dunc told me about this earlier but I waited untill the BBC News 24 report before posting.

One strong guy if he pulls through. :) My thoughts go out to him and those with him.

Oh no!
He has done quite some scary work for Top Gear, racing Porsche Cayenne Turbo S in Cyprus, raced a Land Rover-based offroad rallycar, etc. I could never believe something like this would happen.
Get well soon Richard, hang in there!

A more detailed article in this morning's Scotsman newspaper...

Let's hope he pulls through and that he is able to make a full recovery from his injuries...

My step-bro has his premises at an industrial estate at Elvington. I've just emailed him to see if he watched it or knows any more details.

*edit*

He says he could hear it all day yesterday and it sounded great. As he was leaving to go home at 5.30 they'd just set-off again. Ten minutes later he was passed by an ambulance going the other way...

Click Here to see all the messages of goodwill left on the BBC website.

I know he's a popular guy, but I was amazed that there were already 751 messages when I posted this.

All I can add is hope he makes a speedy and full recovery.

It was just on the news here in belgium and with images where you could see the crashed car and the marks it has left behind.

I hope he'll recover fully

I have yet to see pictures of this accident, can you post them? (Not being sick or anything)

Anyway, this accident was a tragedy, the only protection he had was a helmet and some metal bars which I seriously doubt can stand an impact of 280MPH...

I am trying to refrain from calling him 'Hamster' at this time, I don't think it's right to take the p!ss at a time like this

EDIT: Actually, it's no surprise that someone would eventually get seriously hurt... Jeremy has broke a thumb, slipped a disc and sustained some pretty bad wounds over the series
