Just heard some live updated news on ITV about it..... They were doing a speed record attempt and Hammond had already broke it..... but they did another run to gather more footage for the show... on that final run the paracute to slow the car down did open... but suddenly the car veered off the runway and crashed .....because it doesnt have a roof you can imagine what it feels like to hit the ground with you head at 280! It took the fire service 10 mins to cut him out, he was unconscious when they got him out but he regained consciousness briefly in the air ambulance (hopefully a good sign).....now he is still critical, doctors are with him now, also his family and some Top Gear people (i.e. clarkson and may probably).....

Actually, thinking about it now I bet it was the poor surface quality of tarmac that did it...any small kink or bump in the surface could have done it. Such attempts really shouldnt be done on such small airfields... It should be on a properly built dragster track or special surface...
