Unexpectedly Fast Cars & Sleepers

Lots of misunderstanding as to what a sleeper is! To me, it means something that looks slow, but isn't. The ZZ II, Supra, MR2, etc are all sports cars of one kind or another and thus do not look slow.

Two cars I regard as sleepers are the Tom's X540 Chaser (looks standard except for the wheels and (fairly understated) wing, yet can be pushed to 666bhp, but only has 5 gears) and the Lotus Carlton, but that's more because when I saw one in real life it took some time for it to click. The owner even replaced the Vauxhall badges for Lotus ones and I STILL didn't quite understand what I was seeing! But yeah, it's only subtly (aesthetically) modified from the standard Carlton, which wasn't exactly a sports car, so to my mind it's a sleeper.

Another that comes to mind is the 80's Galant and possibly a Stagea, but less so than the Legnum; the front end is very close to a Skyline's.

Also GT is pretty much a sleeper builder, you can pick almost any car and make it hustle some pretty serious (untuned) machines, so yeah, there will be quite a few. The X540 is my favourite though because it really doesn't look like much.

The hatchback Subaru Impreza.

I wasn't expecting much, but it was so much fun to drive and very grippy on stock tyres.

Forget the name MR2 for a minute and have a look at the 1986 model;) It looks like a old, square piece of ****

Best thing for you to do is read car info in the shop or search it on the internet. Internet can answer most questions you may have good or bad answers but you can find answers and go from there.

For example "Toyoto Prius sleeper" in search bar.

I got a Eclipse from the UCD. It is a turbo, but it comes with like 13in hubcaps. Looks like the a base model, but gets over 430hp to the front wheels. I know the Eclipse is not a sleeper, but the looks of this one is.

True, but it has obvious sporting intentions, so I don't think it qualifies as a sleeper. I'd go as far as to say there's not a mid engined car on earth that qualifies as a sleeper (except certain Kei cars like the Suzuki Super Carry, though their potential as sleepers is... Doubtful), unless, of course, it was originally something else...

Also, how dare you besmirch the AW11! I love that car, possibly too much.

Does the Nurby Nordy in 8.15, with 207hp and 931kg:lol:

That is absolutely hialrious:lol:

Sleeper: Lined up with a Tundra online this morning. Chuckled because he brought a truck to a 500hp or less street car race at Laguna. Then watched it disappear into the horizon. It beat me by 20 seconds.

Edit: I was in a 475hp 2010 WRX

Part of the problem with this definition in regards to the game, is that everyone can see the name of the car you're using, and you can't "debadge" cars in the game.

Take the S3 for example. An S3 looks *very* similar to a regular A3 minus the wheels and badges. Take the badges off, maybe leave the wheels, and it's much more of a sleeper. Same goes for the SRT-4. A lot of the cars mentioned could qualify if the game didn't make it so obvious you're driving a beast.

As another real world example, there's a local guy who swapped his STi trunk lid for a standard (wingless) imprezza lid, and installed a FMIC so he could put a non-scooped hood on. It still has beasty fenders, but at first glance it's a cheapo, base impreza.

👍

I think freedomweasel has been best able to concisely explain the concept to anyone that was unclear. I know a guy that has a debadged B7 RS4 and if it weren't for the flares and the finish on the back of the mirrors, it looks like an A4 which has less than half the power. By the way, I don't think the wiki article did enough justice to the "q-car" term as my understanding is that it's from the cold war when there were lots of fake diplomats (spies) running around Europe that found fast cars indispensable but couldn't afford to draw attention to themselves by driving around in Lambos.

My suggestion for a car that hasn't yet been mentioned:

Buick Grand National

Maybe not "the ultimate cornering machine," but certainly unassuming looks paired with surprising performance.

Any car under 100,000 base price (and chasis+engine rebuild)+ 330,000 in tuning parts = fully tuned race car depending on the base performance.

I wonder why the Volvo 240 GLT is not in the list.

Mine is modded to about 300Hp.

Also, stop calling any kind of car a sleeper. A sleeper is something that looks slow but is fast. I means pretty much that the only cars that could be called sleepers are cars that are usually used as family cars (vans, non-sporty FF sedans, etc) and compacts that start small and become very fast, like a 250HP Lupo.

The Tiburon, the skyline sedan and the Kusabi arent sleepers.

The Kusabi is a prototype, and I though it was common knowledge that this car was very fast.

The Tiburon and the Skyline Sedan are both qualified as sports cars and therefore arent really sleepers.

I would also remove the silverado, because its a prototype and because it looks fast for a pickup, which isnt the case of the Tacoma.

Are you guys talking about the Toyota X-Runner?
If so, that is a Tacoma, not a Tundra.

Whatever.

My point was, to see a truck when all you've been racing against for hours is sports cars was a little strange and humorous at the same time. Then to get your a** handed to you by said truck is a bit :irked: followed by 🤬

I would call my Honda Odyssey a sleeper, even though it's only been tuned to 400hp, I can somehow get it to 108mph, in reverse.

People need a reality check on what a sleeper is.
A sleeper is your typical family car, or typical base model hatch or coupe。
A supra is not a sleeper, A fiat panda would be considered a sleeper, Thoughs little AWD Kei cars are little monsters they are sleepers, A Toyota VITZ is a sleeper. A bone stock looking mazda atenza is a sleeper,

Basically a car that looks extremely slow, Get with the program people.

I think what threw people off was the price restriction in the title.

Does no one except the OP understand the term "sleeper"???

There's a big gap between a real-life sleeper and one in the game, and it depends on what context your using the term in. For example, the BMW M3 is known to be pretty quick, so maybe not a sleeper at first glance. But take the M3 CSL...looks like any other plain Jane M3, but it's FAR from it. In a group of M3's and similar cars, the M3 CSL would most definitely be a sleeper. :)

For something a little off the beaten path, the stock Opel Speedster Turbo ‘00 is a little monster once you can drive it.

06 Focus fully tuned, used it the other day in the FF seasonal event, I was surprised how well it drove

Nissan Skyline Stagea things... you know what I'm on about.

I was learning the ring quite a while ago in a Japanese room using my lightly modified F40, one of those estates totally outbraked me on a bend and I then couldn't get anywhere near it!
