Unexpectedly Fast Cars & Sleepers

The Renault Avantime is good once you tune it up.

Yep, can vouch for this, once you get over the understeer. Used a tuned one for the Seasonal Time Trial for French cars on the Rome track... managed to get in the top 12000... not bad methinks for someone who is generally untidy on timed runs

XJ220 Transit van = sleeper

'98 Ford Taurus SHO anyone?

Just tried to see how much power I could get.

I have to say that I am impressed with the 411 HP I got from that FF sedan.

And I have to say, looking at the base HP from other sedans, like the Acura CL and the Primera, I have to say that I am pretty sure most of the large FF sedans can be made into sleeps.

Although I am pretty sure the Space Odyssey eats them for lunch.

(Sorry to all the UK mates out there, I'm sticking with the US jargon based on my familiarity with it...)

Yeah, I'd have to agree that there's a fundamental issue with this thread. I'm not pointing fingers, but it's the inability of some posters to define a "sleeper".

Maybe, with the following suggested criteria, we can assist those who still choose to post "sleeper" suggestions:
Regardless of size, if a vehicle looks like it can go fast when it's standing still, it's not a sleeper.

Hope this helps, and please read through the thread so we don't have fifty additional posts revealing that the Odyssey is a sleeper. Feel free to post that you agree, but it's not an original contribution... Thanks!

I'd like to submit the VW R32. Stock for stock compared to other hatchbacks it's pretty darn fast. It has different exhaust outlets and wheels but the average driver won't notice the R badge over a Golf or GTI badge. Though in the game it's not as nice as the real ones.

Toyota Yaris Turbo
Mazdaspeed Atenza
Daihatsu SIRION X4 (J) '00
Toyota MR2 1600 G-Limited Super Charger '86
Toyota 2000GT
Toyota CELICA 2000GT-FOUR (ST165) '86
Toyota CALDINA GT-FOUR '02
Ginetta G4
Subaru Legacy B4 Blitzen
etc...

Any 3000GT model, they're fast, fun, and not hard to find. The turbo variants are probably wild while my 380-hp NA SR model is a cozy cruiser with enough oomph to get it going.

But it's not a sleeper, not even close.

Why not?
It says in the description of the car that you hardly see that this is a superfast sportscar, looks like a regular familycar except for the wheels.
So what is a sleeper if not a car that looks ordinary but will destroy a super sportscar?

In the game I'd say it's probably not because when lining up for the race you'll see someone has selected an "RS" car, but in real life, take off the red RS badges and joe on the street just sees a station wagon full of kids and groceries.👍 I love that car.

The RS6 doesn't look like a ordinary familycar. It looks like a A6 on testosterone(look at the front, fenders, exhaust pipes) and if you can't see the difference between a normal A6 and a RS6 you must be blind.

But I know, people in general don't have an eye for details.

Do you ever talk to people who aren't into cars? The whole point of a sleeper is that the average person doesn't know the difference. Of course car people are going to know the difference between a regular A6 and an S or RS, but as I said above, random guy on the street sees a family estate car.

The performance line of Audi looks a lot like the base models, more so than most other performance cars in my opinion.

Yes, most of my friends aren't into cars actually. For them a car is a box with four wheels and they will never use the term sleeper, they wouldn't even react if for example a Koeniggsegg passed them.

So the term sleeper is only used by people who know and have an interest in cars, and for us there is a big difference between a normal A6 and a RS6.

I would never consider a RS6 to be a sleeper, sure it's a fast car which also weight 2 tons and costs like $150,000.

My friend has a Corsa with exhaustpipes he bought for like 100$...that doesnt make me asume its superfast. If i see an Audi RS6 i guess id spot the differance but id never think it had like 450HP and went 0-100 in 4.9sek...with tuning it goes under 3 sek, have to see..but my guess is like 2.5 sek.

It's a term used by car people yes, but I can't think of many factory (ie not engine swapped, etc) sleepers that car people couldn't identify. The idea is that you pull up to the stoplight in your wagon of groceries and the average guy in the mustang next to you thinks he's hot ****. You then lay waste to him with a wagon. When you get down to it, it's a station wagon with a twin turbo V10, to me, that's a sleeper.

If you swap the wheels and take off the RS badges the car would be harder to identify at a glance even for car people.

But, this might just be an agree to disagree situation. 👍

I think the confusion comes with the target audience. Certain cars look like sleepers in real life and you could surprise the pants off people at stop lights with them. However in a racing game with racing fanatics it will take more than a bland looking car to fool people. Prime example is the Mazdaspeed Atenza mentioned above. I have one IRL and it fools a lot of people (mostly ones that miss the mazdaspeed badge on the back). In the game however anything that has AWD and the word "speed" in the title is not going to fool anyone. Same applies to the Taurus SHO. You'll need a minivan a Prius or a really old car to fool us.

I think the discussion here should be to point out cars that a) look like beaters and b) have massive returns from modding. Given a weight/power restriction what can you bring to the line that will fool everyone and own the competition?

Exactly what i think..if you meet this car at stoplight with you porsche and then you eat dust when you thought youd show off thats when youve met a sleeper...specially if it has groceries and kids in it too..hahaha i can almost see that "surprised and wtf happened" face on the porsche guy...

the Camaro SS 2010 can take down a Viper GTS quite easily if you get it running correctly...the NSX-R will also kill right about anything with around 400 horsepower

The AMG estate even has rear facing seats so your kids can point and laugh :)

But isn't the whole point with a sleeper that you you take a cheap/slow car, modify the engine but keep it stock from the outside.

If the car is fast from the beginning it's just a normal sports sedan?

I've posted the video before, but here is an example of what I consider is a sleeper

Older car vs newer, newer cars look lot more sporty, a new civic looks faster! Then its not a new audi, the one i use is a 02 model...more like the Volvo. The Audi, except for great wheels looks like a ordinary Audi, a new A4/A6 looks like that?

Well, I think that's the whole issue with the thread. In GT5, it needs to be a total piece of crap that you can upgrade a lot because the car name shows up on your screen so there's no hiding what you've got.

In real life, something like the Taurus SHO or a Contour SVT was a sleeper because it's just a regular old family sedan with a monster engine and very little visual distinction. I think my earlier suggestion of a VW R32 works as well.

Ideally we would be able to do engine swaps, but no such luck on that one.

I do admit that the Audi is on the edge simply because it's an Audi. I think sleepers work better if it's based on a more common, cheaper car. People might not know it's as fast as it is, but they'll still see the Audi badge and at least think it's nice. Nice usually seems to connect to fast for most people.

edit: for your audi vs volvo, yes the volvo is way more of a sleeper because it's old and totally unexpected. The audi though, doesn't the base A6 have a 2.0T option? If nothing else would you say that Audi's RS models are more subdued and under the radar than AMGs or Ms?

Yes, the Taurus and Contour are definitely examples of sleepers and as you say, just take an old popular family car and put a monster engine in it and you will have a perfect sleeper. Here in Sweden elder Volvos are common sleepers cause they are cheap and it's easy to find parts to them.

I think the RS4 looks rather anonymous compared to the M3 and C63 AMG, it looks quite boring IMO. But the RS6 and the new E63 AMG is a close one, but compared to the M5 they both looks like monsters.

I hope will be able to swap engines and that we will have more tuning options in GT6 cause now the whole tuning part is rather limited.
