 AAaaaggghhhh!!!!

:nervous: GET THEE BEHIND ME SATAN!!!!! :nervous:

Ed makes the sign of the cross with his fingers as he backs towards the door...

:yuck: YOU ACTUALLY LIKE THEM!!! AAAaaaggghhh!!! :yuck:

I've driven a 345 and a 240 (complete with orange disabled stickers) and they were the the second and third worst cars in the world ever :yuck: (after the Morris Marina).

They were the people that invented stupid buzzers to tell you something you didn't want to know  . They have sloppy steering, sloppy handling and are made for average middle class people who live in a nice safe house with a nice safe job and who want a really nice safe ugly annoying overweight slow anti-car!!!

I'm sorry about that. I'll get my coat.

I'm really quite a nice person.

You brits got the **** boxes for sure. No turbos for you being right hand drive. :yuck:

The turbo cars where an entirely different beast. They also aren't as heavy as you might think. The 240 weighs in at 3150lbs in a fully loaded turbo wagon, with a base model 2 door coming in around 2900lbs.

You shouldn't judge a car so quickly, it makes you look like a :dunce: .

Quickly? It took me 20 years to reach that opinion. And I've held it for a further 19 years. I admit they've changed in that time - they had to. But those old ones luuurch into corners, and they all buzz and click at you and everyone's caught that frickin' desease, and they are truly horrible to drive. The average car for the average man (and I consider that to be a mighty curse...).

I haven't even mentioned Vulva drivers

I won't go on. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and if they weren't here we wouldn't know how awful cars could be, would we?

By the way, at a bike rally years ago they gave us a 240 estate, some crow bars and a couple of scaffolding poles... That was sweet revenge. :)

Edit: it's just occurred to me, I've hardly driven any american cars. They probably seem quite nice to you...

A bike rally...

They might lurch into the corners but I hear they grip well enough when push comes to shove. The 240 is a 70s design anyway but come on even mentioning one in the same sentence a Morris Marina...

When you say stupid buzzer, I assume you mean the seat belt warning? If that annoys you stick your belt on, you'd be stupid not to.

Hmmmmm.

Volvo 240

Now notice how many reviews are positive ones. How could this be, if this is such a horrible car? sometimes even the best cars have some problems. just because you experienced some does not mean every 240 sucks, (maybe you got a dud  ) plus basing an opinion of the whole brand on 2 older, lower models....not cool 👎

ever driven or been in an S60 R?? Though not.

Heres a question for Volvo fans, or anyone that knows really...

Is there such thing as a Volvo 740 2.0 16v Turbo? I recently bought a Haynes book on the history of Volvo and it mentions the above model as having 200BHP, the fastest Volvo of its time. I think the engine was designated with GT at the end. Anyway I dismissed this as probably being wrong as I had only heard of the 2.3 16v, 2.3 Turbo and a enthusiasts 2.3 16v to turbo conversion, but never a 2.0 16v Turbo.

So I never though much of this... until yesterday when I noticed this on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLVO-740-Turbo-16v-injection-lefthand-drive_W0QQitemZ4575791565QQcategoryZ9872QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Which states it as 16v Turbo (which as far I knew never existed), but then also as a 2.0 litre (and registered in 1994, but this may be do with it coming from spain I don't know! bit 'new' for a 740 but the rear is deffinately a 700) Which seems to be the same model mentioned in my Volvo history book. Therefore this makes me wonder whether this is real or a load of bull? The idea of a 200BHP as standard turbo brick excites me  The car on ebay would be tempting even though its left hand drive but it has a towbar, is an automatic and is in London...

Edit: It also says 4 wheel drive... I'm starting to really doubt that car now

When you say stupid buzzer, I assume you mean the seat belt warning? If that annoys you stick your belt on, you'd be stupid not to.

I do put my seatbelt on. I feel naked without it. But they still buzz when you're manoeuvring round the garage. I don't need the bloody car telling me what to do as well as everyone else....

Saw a 740 and a 440 today. The 740's another blancmange, and I don't remeber the 440 ever getting any prizes as a great driver's car, but I'm sure it was very 'nice'... Then there was the 480ES, which can go into the same category as a Nissan 100NX - dustbin material.

As for the latest versions, I know they're all up to date and modern (and it's very hard to buy a truly bad car in the 70's sense of the word these days), but I guarantee that their handling will not be in the same league as any driver's car, ancient or modern. It will merely be average.

Plus they've always got their damn lights on, their indicators don't work, they're not as brilliant in a crash as their reputation suggests (Mercedes and Audi have always been much better and have worked harder at it), and their drivers are frequently blind or on drugs.

In fairness, they have built some great cars: The PV444, the Amazon, and the P1800 & P1800ES were all fine cars, leaders in their class, and with a rallying reputation to match. But after they designed the 240, they just sort of gave up making decent cars. Such a shame...

Still a truly average car.

Well yeah its annoying when the buzzer goes off when your sitting in the driveway, not that it ever bothered my dad as he removed it.

The 740 might not be the most exciting car in the world to drive, but its very solid, very reliable, very safe comfortable but the ride isn't great. I'm sure a 740 is more safe then most of not all BMWs/Audis/Mercs of the same age. A 740 certaintly doesn't rust as badly as any of the those 3 makes. The 440 isnt a great car, it is pretty average but its still better than an Escort for example. I personally like the look of the 480 but it is an acquired taste. The 850 is a good drivers car, it handles well for what it as and the T5 is fast and makes a great noise thanks to its 5 cylinder engine.

The lights are usually on because in Sweden its required but most of the modern Volvos as well as the 850 according to my brother can turn these off. If anything having your lights on can only be a good thing as it helps you be seen, its not like sidelights are gonna blind anyone. Don't know what you mean about the indicators...

True many of the 70s cars up to the mid 90s weren't appealing to the majority of the general public. But as far as I'm concerned, thats their loss. Especially when your running a 740 with 300,000 miles with nothing but usual servicing items, clutches etc... Plus you always know a Volvo when you see one ;)

Wrong. Mercedes were crash testing cars before anyone even thought Volvos were safe (roughly 1965 to my knowledge, but likely before that as well).

SIPS is a bar in the door.

Procon ten was way ahead of Volvo, what, 15 years ago?

Like I said, their reputation (based mostly on their weight), far exceeds the truth.

You worship mediocrity.

30 gold, 50 silver ...speaking of mediocrity...

What does the 12 in your user name stand for? Your age?

Go argue somewhere you are wanted, if you can find such a place.

10 best cars in a crash

Strange! Volvo takes both 1st AND 2nd spot. Not to mention some (not sure which) Insurance company named The S80 one Of the Safest cars OF ALL TIME. and what do you know...Audi and mercedes are no where to be seen!

Volvo
Audi
Mercedes

Now notice all the Blue boxes in the overall category. :dunce:

Well, my dad has a '99 S70 T5 w/ a manual(the only way to roll).

He had a 850 GLT sedan before that w/ 230,000 mi, it went strong for the first 200k but it was in the shop almost weekly after that.

Just thought I'd share.

Ooh your personal taunts have all the savagery of a worried sheep! If you think 30 golds is mediocrity, you obviously think I hold Volvos in a far higher regard than I actually do...

This'll make me laugh: in the Euro NCAP tests (shurely the industry standard?...)the Volvo S70 & S80 were beaten by the Audi A6, Lexus GS300, Saab 9-5, Mecedes E class and, wait for it....

   THE RENAULT VEL SATIS

You were beaten by a Renault!!!

Anyway, sorry to spoil your thread. I'll go now. I will read your replies but I will let you guys have the last word and refrain from responding until I've driven something a bit more modern (T5? that should be the best driver's car of the lot). And don't worry: if I like it I will say so. I would actually be quite pleased to know that Volvo have changed their ways, after the rubbish they threw our way in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Happy motoring.

You do know that the euro ncap crash tests are a joke. Certain car manufactures have found out how to beat the tests ie no how to make their cars to excell in the testing that the ncap testers do. In all other crash tests renault are always in the middle whilst volvo audi mercedes bmw lexus do well and are at the top.

Just because Mercedes were crash testing cars, doesn't mean they were safe cars...

SIPS is not just a side impact bar, I'm sure 740s had side impact bars and that had no mention of SIPS. I can't off the top of my head say what the differences were, but I could if I had more time and could be bothered. Reputation has it atleast that Volvo invented the seat belt for the car atleast as well as air-bags and some other things.

Volvos may be heavy, even if it isn't much different to cars in the same class, but alteast they are built with structural strength and have crumple zones as part of the car instead of relying on the flesh bags behind the wheel ;)

Even if Renault do have good euro ncap tests, I'd still feel safer in a Volvo. One thing is for sure, Volvo was putting safety first before all the other manufacturers hopped on the bandwagon. It wouldn't suprise me though if Volvo weren't the top dog for safety anymore however as they are now owned by Ford. 240 v Sierra in 30mph crash = bye bye Sierra.

I tell ya it's pretty fair to compare a 98 and 2000 car against three 03/05 cars, because you know 5 years of development time and changing safety requirements won't make any difference...

So you want a 7 seater Volvo estate, but you also want the large load area. Not possible? well your prayers have been answered (well if you are interested in carrying around the choir and the cello!?).

Why not buy this rather tired stretched Volvo, estate! off ebay. I've never seen a stretched estate before (well unless you count hearses and ambulances) so thought I'd share it with you if you hadn't either.

I'd buy it, if a) I had loads of money b) somewhere to park it, purely for amusement value. :)

If it was the turbo version, I'd save money to buy it -- seriously. But because it's the 2.8-liter V6 engine, I'm not interested. :sly:

Well I part exchanged my 1.2 SEAT Ibiza towards a newer car as I needed something a little more refined  Having looked at buying a Volvo for over a year I finally saw one that would actually be a nice car and sensible for going to work in, without a towbar, automatic transmission or an estate!!1 :scared:

However it also wasn't a big Volvo (Which it seems I won't find in my lifetime)...

I am now the proud owner of a 1996 Volvo 460 1.6i GS :D

460small.jpg

460small2.jpg

Being GS it has a rather nice spec list:

PAS, ABS, Air Conditioning, Remote Central Locking, Alloys, Spoiler, Immobiliser (Alarm too?), Electric Mirrors, Part-leather interior, Volvo Cassette Radio (Can be attached to a CD auto changer though, speakers are pretty good)

Good points (so far):
My brother (who owns an 850) says it drives like a much bigger Volvo and I agree.
Fantastic to drive I love it, oh and power steering!
Should give over 36MPG going to work (Not much worse than SEAT)
Been garaged all its life (only 1 absolutely tiny bit of rust on the inner wheel arch, paint is immaculate minus a couple of minor marks)
43,000 miles (and it feels it) with full service history. MOT'd for nearly a year too.
Faster than my old car (although that ain't saying much) and doesn't actually feel underpowered.
Insurance group 6!
The electric arial actually goes up, and down!
Engine is very quiet and the engine and clutch are smooth. Slight growl from the 1.6 when it gets into higher revs which is nice. By no means a Speed Demon but it can move if you ask it nicely ;)
No rattles or squeaks!

Bad points (so far):
Passenger side wing mirror casing fell off  when someone shut a door a bit hard. I think one of the clips has been damaged previously, hence the masking tape holding it on in the picture.
Fan belt squeals when its first started on damp mornings (usual for Volvos I think, only lasts a few seconds).
Stuff in the boot rolls around like you wouldn't believe...
Needs mudflaps (for going to work) and car mats. (Both should soon be rectified)
No heated seats :(

/Looks like I need a new taillight bulb :sly: (I guess I should buy a multipack...)

Excellent! Congratulations on the new car! Good luck with it!

Looks great! Unfortunately they're not sold in the US. :(

I'm still saving for another car too...

Thanks :)

Well I've already had a good run in it on the A1 (Dual carridgeway) where it was really nice. Will see tomorrow how well it copes on the bumpy road to work. Its nice having headlights that actually illuminate the road ;) (Especially now its winter time). I drove around for the first 2 weeks I got my SEAT Ibiza with the lights on full beam and nobody even realised... The normal headlights looked like sidelights compared to most cars

Nice car T5-R!

As Brian said, we don't get these here... It seems share a few (lots ot :P)pieces with the 850/ S70. How does it looks inside?

👍 ha ha!

So, the new volvo both allows you to see accidents before you crash into them, and keeps you safe if you do ;)
