The 400 series doesn't have a great reputation thanks to some poorly built early models and that they rust more than most Volvos. However many people forget they are generally better than Ford Escorts etc... although not quite at the same level as bigger cars. They are also great value for money. Being as there smaller I guess Volvo decided they were perhaps not big and powerful enough for American tastes?? Although it was probably more due to high export costs and not being able to compete with Japanese manufacturers at the same price level.

The interior isn't that similar to the 850/S70, but it does look Volvo like. My brother reckons the clock is the same type as the one in our old 740 . The centre console vents are vertical which is quite unusual. I'm very impressed that the interior has absolutely no rattles or squeaks, but I doubt this will last going to work on bumpy country roads! If I remember I'll take some pics of it at the weekend when it will get a good wash/wax(especially around the arches) and vacuum :)

What I can say though is that the seats are nice and comfy and that despite the lack of heated seats, there not as cold as my SEATs cloth seats come home time.

I'd like to join.

I drive a chardonnay-colored '96 Volvo 850 Turbo station wagon. Absolutely beautiful handling, actually better than the sedan. 👍 Riding in it while your dad's going 130 is really, really fun, also (he won't let me drive that fast).

Makes driving addictive, can't wait to drive it every time. :)

I almost bought your car (dark grey)... but the deal fell through. I haven't given up, though, and I'm saving to buy an 850 Turbo to replace my 740 Turbo. I'd rather buy the sedan because it's lighter -- but the wagon is high on the priority list. :)

I'm guessing you know why nobody likes the 7-series much...electrical problems a-plenty. I really have no need for the wagon to be lighter than the sedan if it handles better due to essential design differences (the wagon is NOT, if you look closely, an extended-cab version of the sedan).

Glad to know others appreciate these car's potential. :)

Personally, I haven't had any electrical issues yet... but I'd like to buy an 850 before anything like that happens.

Does the wagon have the same drag coefficient as the sedan?

Maybe I'm wrong, I don't have the numbers, but...I think the wagon's coefficient is less as well.

Can't say I've ever heard of problems with 740s electrics, we didn't have any from what I can remember. Although I've heard the fuel gauges are unreliable, but thats hardly note worthy.

Haven't taken any pics of the inside of mine yet as I haven't had time to clean/wax it. Only been to work twice in it and its pretty mucky already. Also need some new wipers as these the ones on it are old and crap. Already ordered a new stereo for it too :)

My dad's kept ours in very, very close-to-mint condition....it still smells car-y.

I can attest to that! :ill: They're terrifyingly inaccurate.

Hey!

Nice to see this thread up and running!
Just Thought I might pop in to say congrats on the new car T5-R! what brand of stereo you gonna go with? I have alpine type-x in my car all around and type-R subs, and it sounds awesome, Highly recomend it if you dont mind the rather large pricetag 👍

I would also like to welcome Jon. and logi74 to the club! 👍

Whee!

I'm looking to buy myself my own 850 Turbo or 245, I've been looking through eBay and car-sale websites (new and used).

Just needs a good wash (Just like mine and my brothers 850 now) :D Don't often see 850s in that colour, looks like a nice interior too.

My old cars fuel gauge was pretty useless, was always half a tank out (how useful...), good job the trip meter worked ;) Never dared to see if the fuel warning lamp worked. My 460s takes a few minutes to reach its actual level but seems fairly accurate so far.

Thanks :D I've got my new stereo here with me now although unfortunately unfitted as I need some keys/brackets to take out the old Volvo radio cassette. Bought a Pioneer DEH-P7700MP with an OEL display for £150, it had better be worth the price compared to the Pioneer 4700MP which is £85. My brother convinced me to go for the more expensive one

Oooh, i should add the sig link :)

logi74, how come you can drive? It says in your profile that you're only 15.

You have to be 17 over here :(

maybe some of you've seen this... its a vid of a australian touring car chanpionchip race with a Volvo 240 Turbo Grupp-A. the volvo is starting at 4-5th place against bmw's and a Ford Mustang V8. i cant belive the volvo grupp-a's were so fast back then! remember the volvo just had 2.1 liter 4 cylinder engines with volvo performance parts!

http://www.tuff240.com/videos/lakeside85ATCC.wmv enjoy! :D

how many of u like this car? you can think i'm mad, but this is my dreamcar! a 1984 Volvo 244 Turbo. and this colour is probably the nicest!

Looks great! :) Very clean. What did Volvo call that color? Is it a manual or an automatic?

Swap a B230FT in that thing and you're all set!

After I get my check, I'll be shopping around for a replacement for my 1988 Volvo 740 Turbo wagon.

I don't think your mad at all! I LOVE that car....so maybe we are both a little nutty. :D

Ok Ok Ok, i give in,

i want to join the GTP Volvo Fan Club as well, please.

I own one of the nicest Estates/Wagons that i could get a couple of years ago. Only to find out later that she's a bit of a rare girl, she's the 940 Classic [Special Edition] 2.3 16V Turbo. Fully Loaded with: Alloys / Air / Cruise Control / Leather & Electric everything. And what a sleeper, the best i've yet seen on the speedo is just over 125MPH with loads of power left! And she's the best car i've ever owned.

Do i qualify? Am i in?

Do let me know,

Cheers,

Gram.

Looks like a nice car, is that an original colour though? looks like one off a mid 90s Volvo.

Nice car GramNitrous, when you say special edition is it the so called 'Sports Edition' which I think is supposed to have 200BHP and harder suspension. I didn't think they did a 2.3 16v Turbo, just a 2.3 8v HPT, but the sports edition could be (hence gaining abit more juice ;) ) I saw a really nice saloon HPT in turquoise with all 'the bits' but unfortunately it had a dodgy mileage :( I'd like to get a saloon version similar to yours when I eventually find one that ain't an auto or has a towbar. Your cars got the nice wheels on too :D

Thanks T5-R, yes she is a bit of a 'wolf in sheeps clothing'.

About the model, what i meant was that the "940 CLASSIC" model was a Special Edition, to include all the goodies.

As to the 'Techs & Specs' i'll check into it for you, and edit this post.

What i can say for now though, is that the turbo installation is to my eyes fairly massive, with all its large bore ducting and so on.👍

Oh and about the wheels, i got really lucky for once, when i found a fifth one, the spare, just like the ones on the road.:)

I know you want a saloon, but do keep an open mind about the Estate/Wagon version, as you really can get a wardrobe in the back, i know because i have literaly done just that, when i moved home shortly after buying the car.

Cheers for now,

Gram.

I'm in. I have two: an '86 240 and a 98 V70. The 240 is a TANK. You all can read all about it:

Welcome to the club ad_elf. 👍 Like I said to GramNitrous, feel free to add the link to your sig. :)

I must say, after owning a 740 wagon, I have quite a softspot for the estates.
That back can fit almost anything in it! I can remember after christmas one year, I was dropping off the old christmas trees at one of the drop off centers. As I get there, I see a huge row of vans and SUVs with their trees tied to the roof, and the owners struggling to undo the ropes and get them down. I pull up, hop out of my car, pull this massive tree out of the back and then drive away. It was such a funny sight to look in my rear view mirror and see all the other guys just stairing at me as I drive away.
