Weekly Drag Series Week 4 + Results

Hi guys and girls.

This week Las Vegas is proud to be the venue for our week of testing with the Buick Special '62.

You may do anything you like to the car, except no Nitrous again, no racing slicks, no racing chip, and no driving aids. Anything else is fair game.

Remember to save your settings after your best run - as you are required to post a full setup if you are the winner! It is advisable to save your replay, too; although I will never ask you for proof unless you really obliterate the field and your settings don't add up.

Today is July 22nd and the deadline is July 28th at midnight.

Good luck!

This will also serve as a qualifier for a seperate tournament darkwind and I are in the process of creating. The tournament will not affect or take the place of the normal WDS event during the time we decide to run it. The tournament will be single elimination, and you will be paired with somebody close to you in the standings. If you turn in a time you are automatically eligible for the tournament - but you may choose to refuse to participate in the tournament, if you wish. You must alert me of this though before this week is over. The tournament won't be open only to those who happen to race this week - even when this week is over, newcomers will still be able to race in the tournament.

You can PM me your time or post it in this thread.

Forgive me for my ignorance… does slicks = tires??? Or in other words are we limited to normal or sports tire only?

And now a little IMO:
I can understand the no driving aids limitation, one might think it is a better test of driving skills (personally I rather have TCS but it does make sense)
I have no problem with the no NOS rule, I don’t like that upgrade and I wish it didn’t make it to GT4. (but if it’s there I will certainly use it)
But why limit us to sports tires and not letting us install a racing-chip? That does nothing but slows the car. it is not harder to drive just make it slower. Why not explore the true potential of the car. for most of us (for me, anyway) this contest will be the only time I will ever run that specific car in Vegas, I would much rather learn how fast it truly can be.

How Kenny is having us run this is sorta like having to run a drag race before computer chips were widely used, and as far as I know, most cars from the 60s-80(maybe 90s?)s didn't really have/use traction control of any kind.

However since the chip, nitrous, and racing slicks are all removable parts with no permanant change on the car, why not run with those and then go back to what we have to use?

EDIT: Yes, slicks mean tires.

this should be a fun race. Sports softs here, everything else available is on the car.

Now I get to test my new wireless controller. mwahahaha

EDIT EDIT: OK... wireless controller is really sensitive on the analog controls.

I think I'm at a serious disadvantage this week. best time so far is a 13.474.

The Buick Special in GT4 is actually modeled after a R/L show car that won "best of show" somewhere here in the U.S. Like most show cars it's probably a safe bet that all the electronics are the latest and geatest they could afford to build with.

I don't know the entire story, but I think part of the prize for winning was to get your car in GT4. I thought it was a great idea. Can you imagine having a personal one of a kind car of your very own in GT4?

Yes, 'sports soft' is the best you can use this week.

Darkwind is right, I'm trying to simulate a race from way back. I didn't know this car was built recently with all the electronics, but no racing chip will stand.

Deuce, by all means go and find out the best potential you can get out of the car! But only post the times you get within the rules :)

10.861...

This is awesome, no TCS really brings more skill into things, and street tires just adds a nice challenge, which in turn also requires more patience :P, but I'm stoked for this, also a beautiful car as well.

I know I have the lead right now, and there are other more skilled "no TCS" players out there, such as kenny, who I know will probably post a faster time sometime tonight, but for the guys thatr rely on the TCS, this could be interesting.

Good luck to all. :)

Good time, I'm glad you like the challenge.
I'm sure the winners of last week's challenge, who adapted the use of TCS, will fare just as well.

Oh I'm faring just about as good as my first time. I'm to devoted to the modifiable TCS of sim mode. I'm sure my whole 1/2 throttle runs aren't helping either. bleh. :yuck:

For my 10.996 I was in half throttle for 2nd and 3/4 throttle for 3rd, rest full

10.765 - nearly full throttle for 2nd, and full for the rest on.

More time to be had for sure.

O.K. Just finished another SCCA round so I can get back to Vegas. Still working on breaking under 11s. very, very strong car.

Awesome I'm very curious as to what you'll get.

I hope darkwind gets time, too!

I'll have time Tuesday. Only 3-4 hours, but more than enough to get a good run. After tuesday I'm working for the rest of the week so I don't know when else I'll get time to run.

Why is it the cashiers are being worked to death and baggers have lax schedules??? It's not like they have anything to do on their free time! They goof off all the time at work! It's ludicrous!

Ah...I'm DYING to get a good run in the WDS, but as it is, I can barely hang in the WRS. *curses*

Welcome! I'm sure you'll get a good run.

If all else fails, grab a green marker and pretend you're sick! :ill:

As long as you get time, Darkwind :)

Yeh, we both work at the same place, and I am VERY much tempted to call off today/tomorrow after yesterday's crap. I need a break after all that! :yuck:

I take it you're off tomorrow, too, then?

10.726....

P.S, My new screen name will be BCDSM next time I come on hopefully, so when you see BCDSM posting away about his times, dont welcome the new guy, its just me. :P

Damn good time! It will take some work for me to beat that.

Why the new name?

First real session: down to 11.250 or so.
Haven’t tuned the car other than the regular stuff, I think there is another full sec’ somewhere?
We’ll see,
Deuce.

You'll be in the 10's in no time, trust me :)

Ran a 10.680, then 5 minutes later after a quick tranny adjustment, 10.578....It's going to be tuff to get lower then that, but the week is still young. 👍

Wow! 👍 👍

I think it's time for a new name for me! haha

Man... I really need to learn how to race without the TCS. Well, I'm off to go try this out.

👍 on the time BCDSM

Thanks guys, the 10.578 was one of those perfect launches, perfect shifts and everything kind of runs. I can run consistant 10.6's. I never had any experience with not using the TCS till about a month ago when I took on trying to learn how to drift and I liked the challenge and realism.

If your not using the right analog to control the throttle its the only way to go, especially with drag racing.

I'm sure you guys will get good real quick with some practice. This car is a beast, but It's hard to tune a tranny when It takes ALOT to get a perfect run down, with TCS it's like back to back to back good runs so you can just go in an adjust every 3rd run, with no TCS it's like evey 3rd run is a good run, so it's a little harder.

Good luck to all, I have a really busy week, so I'm sure if I'll be able to improve on this time, but I'll try when I can.

Cheers,

Care to share any tranny settings?

12.496

I've pretty much eliminated tire spin, but the method is a big waste of the engines power. I shift a bit before 6,000 RPM which is no where near the best the engine can do. I'm also launching in 3rd so theres little or no tire spin until it hits about 4-5K rpm in 3rd

EDIT: Toyed with the tranny and suspension a bit more.

New best is 11.040.

I really need to do more tuning because now I can't get below 11.2 so that 11.04 was a lot of good timing
