I started
another 3-hr GT3/GTWC enduro at the Nurburgring, this time with 2x fuel/tyre wear, and it started really well... but it remains to be seen if it will turn out to be a good race.
The fuel lasted 22 laps in the first session, and took almost exactly 45 minutes - so I figured that the race will be 88 laps, and an almost perfect 3-stop strategy for the AMG. However, once again one leaves the pits with less range (20 laps) than from the start of the race (22 laps). So, I switched from FM1 to FM6 for laps or so, to put myself back into the Lap 44 pit window, and that seemed to work fine. But... there's a bit of a problem.
The first quarter of the race (22 laps), the purple time was set by me at 1:59.1xx - second quarter, I was still fastest until I dropped to FM6 and lost the lead, but I stayed with the two AI cars (also AMGs), figuring that I would pass them again shortly as I was able to return up to FM1... but no - the AI went into beast mode and disappeared up the road, taking a massive 20s lead in just 6-7 laps, and was hitting 1:55s - 4 seconds a lap faster than me
I will have to look back at the replay once the race is done, as it's possible that they switched to Medium tyres, but that doesn't explain why they were slower than me for the first half of the second quarter of the race. The change in pace between laps 33 and 44 was astonishing and disconcerting... I've seen rubber banding allow the AI to catch the leader, but I've never seen it propel the lead AI so far up the road before...
