I'm not sure if the Cuba Libre was actually invented in Cuba, but as far as Cuba is a socialist country, you can mess up with the drink name as much as you want, it's yours too after all.
Here in Portugal, and in other european countries I've visited, it's almost universally spelled as I corrupted it. Dunno why, it always appears like this. You're quite right, though.
