What have you done to your car today?

Removed the rear drums and replaced them with disk brakes yewsterday :D
I would take a picture but the car is really dirty.

EDIT:
Heres a funny before and after pic. Since the first pic a truck got impalled on that tree and had to be cut down  and the neighbours got a porch...oh yea and I got rear disks fitted. In person the rear disks look and are bigger than the front as their from a 2.0l Si! Need to be worn it a bit too as the disks still look a bit dull and have a few pits in them.

In the past week (or so), I've...

- Listened to the rear diff start howling,
-Changed the rear diff oil to Redline Heavy Shockproof, which silenced the diff,
-Driven several hundred kilometers, most of which on a few days of skiing,
-Had my car sink into (what I thought was) compact snow up to the front axle,
-Gained many significant and deep scratches getting it out of said hole, thanks to hamfisted helpers,
-Had my power locks seize a few times,
-Taken it through an auto wash, stripping all coatings from the paint, and
-Listened to my transmission start whining in fourth and fifth gears.

I'm not a happy boy right now.

I'll probably try and change the transmission oil within the next two weekends, and I'm hoping to get the car cleaned up at the very least, and hopefully do an agressive polish over the new scratches and marks with wax to follow.

I believe the only good thing that's happened to my poor Talon over the last while is that I've gotten the big(ger) brakes on the front, and have come in posession of a third set of wheels, 16*8 this time.

'Tis time to start considering a second car, methinks. I spotted a completely rust-free Mk. 1 GTI today... It looked to be immaculate. That said, I also know of a Talon for parts that's being offered for $500. If only I had extra cash...

After finally getting it out again (been driven twice in a year and a half before this), I found out that at least one spark plug fouled out because of how old the gas was. Put 5/8 of a tank worth of new gas in, and added a bottle of fuel system cleaner. Once I'm sure that all the crap's out of the tank/lines/injectors, I'll probably change out the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor-it needs it fairly badly.

Edit: Scored a set of Rain-X Latitude wiper blades for free, so I put them on the truck. Work a LOT better than the old ones.

Today I was bored so I decided to switch out my front tires with the smaller spares I have. It looks horrible but it's only temporary.

mycudasmall85gd7.jpg

My front left is slowly leaking and I'm tired of filling it up every week so I wanted to bring it down to Goodyear to see what exactly was wrong with it. Well while I was rolling the tires over to put them in the van I think I figured out the problem.

I still need to bring it to Goodyear to get it patched but at least it gives me the chance to ask about wider tires.

They won't be able to patch that, it's too close to the sidewall and the tire flexing will make the patch fall off.

Start looking for tires.

EDIT: @Slick Rick: I hope you changed your proportioning valve as well, somewhat of a failure of a modification otherwise.

And also because of the flex a plug wouldn't be able to seal the hole properly, either. When a tire is punctured like that repairing it isn't recommended.

Hmm, guess it gives me an excuse to get bigger tires for the rear then, god knows when that will be.

Unfortunately that means she'll be sitting in the parking lot even longer then she has been :guilty:. Those tires I put on the front may have worked with the original owner, but since my exhaust isn't stock I can guarantee it will scrape on the four speed bumps just getting out of the apartment complex. The bad tire will last a bit more than a week but after that I have to drive to a gas station on a nearly flat tire and pay $1 just to fill up my tire, having no garage really sucks.

So you guys get Si's and Type Rs? Lucky you. ;)

Everyone's luckier than us when it comes to Type R's. :P

Today, fixed my rear passenger seat inset on the TL. It was coming out, and took just a bit of effort and patience to refit it back into place. :)

Did this on friday. Motor is getting new bearings with machined crank. Then we will install new fuel rail, pump and injectors to run E85. Should pull another 20-30whp out of it.

No, not really lucky me, I cant afford to run either

The Si was from the states but got sent back to the UK for some reason and parted out. I took the rear brakes and tweeters. Someone else got there before me and took the bucket seats and Si bumpers :grumpy: It was the same colour as mine too so if I found out earlier i would have took the front bumper.

Well I figured I'd give it a try and I was right. The first speed bump out of the complex I scraped, and that one is on level ground. I couldn't dream of getting out of the gate which is on a decline with 3 speed bumps in a row.

Like Perfect Balance said the ideal way would be to get a new tire for that. But from my experience in the place I work we would patch that, provided there was no other serious rim damage on the inside wall of the tire. For normal circumstances it would be fine, if you plan on cornering at 100 mph well then maybe a new a wider set of tires would be the safe option.

Well I'm looking for wider rears for both aesthetics and grip, but it's just going to be driven regularly, and barely at that currently. I was going to try and patch it anyway but thanks for making me feel a bit better about doing it, lol.

Over the weekend I started refurbishment on the '98 Impreza wagon I bought for my daughter. I took the driver's side front suspension apart and inspected bushings, ball joints, etc. That's all pretty sound, and it doesn't need front brakes.

Removed the driver's side front axle, cleaned and repacked the inner CV joint, and replaced the torn boot. Joint feels good despite having the split boot. Outer CV had apparently already had the boot replaced, or at least it seems live and undamaged. Passenger side some evening this week, or more likely next weekend.

It needs to have the LR wheelbearing replaced. I can't press it in and out myself. I'm still trying to decide if it's worth taking it apart and taking the hub somewhere, or if I might just as well have the whole job done.

Changed the oil, at any rate, what was left of it in quantity and quality. Engine sounds a lot happier with a full belly. I've got a couple leaks to chase down - looks like a cam seal on the rear of the right side head (already bought the O-ring) and something up at the left front. Fortunately they already replaced the separator plate when it had some transmission work done a few years ago. That's the main place older Subies tend to leak.

Bought plugs but I still need wires for it. The driver's side plugs don't look fun to get to.

Once the weather warms up, it will get a good thorough wash, and a buffing. It's filthy under the hood, but the paint is still pretty live for a 10+ year old car.

Sometime over the summer I'll get tires for it, and replace the stock steelie wheels and cheap plastic OEM wheelcovers once I'm sure she's less likely to curb it.

So I just went cruising around looking for snow to drive on. I found a huge neighborhood that had a nice mix of fresh and packed snow about 2 inches deep. Hadn't been touched by the plows or salt.

And these tires, man, they're stupid. The swiftness with which I can accelerate, turn, and brake is hilarious. Really, I was taking these turns at 20mph just like I would when it's dry, and I was laughing my ass off in that car. It just wouldn't disobey! I kept trying and trying, going faster, all sorts of stuff and it did it. Nearly full throttle in second gear and full in third with hardly any slippage. Ridiculous! I can brake very comfortably, and pretty hard if I need to. I even found a certain steering angle where the front tires would just super dig in and the rear end would go flying the other direction. Sweet! I didn't even try to make it oversteer, it just did it because the front had so much grip. This thing is a hoss!

Tonight's snow driving was extremely satisfying. I can't wait for deeper snow!

I (finally) got around to washing my car today. Did a nice, thorough job (Sills, undercarriage, fenderwells, etc)...
I had taken it through an auto wash a week ago to get the majority of the salt and sand off the car - Though it did a very lacklustre job of the the wash itself.

I'm pretty sure it stripped every ounce of wax off the car, as it was sheeting off the car rather than beading up... I'll have to get some wax on it soon.

Attempted to find the spark plug that was fouled out horribly, causing it to miss every so often. While I was pulling one of them out, snapped it in two.:ouch:
I should start a tally of the number of things I break while trying to fix this thing...

Next day: ripped my dash apart and replaced a dash light. Need to do it again later, and replace a light socket that had died in there.

Plans for the next week or two: Run the rest of the old gas out, and replace the fuel filter, along with plugs/wires/cap/rotor. This should be fun.

Well, we had an epic snowstorm overnight and it's still snowing relatively hard and there is about a foot of snow and ice on my car. Can you guess what I'll be doing in a bit?

Trying to pull it out without a spark-plug socket?

No, tried too hard to turn it (I think; it started turning really hard all of a sudden and I heard a crack) and ended up breaking the ceramic part off.

I tried to replace the passenger-side CV boot on the Subaru using the same methodology I used last weekend for the driver's side. Score:

Broken 3/8" drive breaker bars: 2
Broken 1/2"-to-3/8" drive adapters: 1
Bent prybars: 1
New CV boots installed: 0

I'm taking it in to get the wheelbearing changed anyway, so I may just ask them to pop the ball joint out of either the control arm or the knuckle, and then just put it back in, so I can replace the boot next weekend.

Get a BFH (Big F$&king Hammer) and beat on the control arm where the ball joint is. They should pop right out.

I started taking apart my Integra GSR front and rear disk brakes for cleaning and repainting.

On Friday, the litre of oil I keep in the back of my car was crushed by the heavy stainless toolkit I keep beside it during some 'spirited' cornering. I extracted a bottle from the back of the car containing about a quarter litre of oil and a split seam.

On Saturday I spent about ten hours doing a detail job on someone else's truck. Yeilded my 'fun budget' for this month.

Today I spent a few hours disassembling the paneling in the back of the car, pulling up the carpet and subfloor, and getting the oil cleaned up. Darkness came before I could think about reassembly. While I'm down there, I'll give the floorpan a good cleaning, as well as the panels I've removed. The last (and first!) owner of the car quite obviously had a dog.

"Should" being the operative word. My BFH and pickle fork are about the only tools I didn't break. On the driver's side I couldn't get it out of the LCA but it came out of the knuckle with only minor persuasion. The passenger side wasn't listening to reason at all.

Got new tires in today to replace the old ones; I was going everywhere but straight on the rain we've been having here.

Front: 2 x 225/40R18 Michelin Excelence (sp?)
Back: 2 x 255/35R18 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A

The ones I took out were F1 Eagle in the front and Michelin Sport Pilot in the back (all 4 were totally wasted, especially the back ones (go figure...)

So far, dramatic improvement. 👍

Put it in the ditch yesterday.:ouch::ouch::ouch:

Came around a corner, and a dog ran out in the road in front of me. Slowed down as much as I could, and got out of the way at the last second. Semi-slippery roads meant I was going straight into the ditch on the other side of the road.

Damage report: As far as I know, I threw the alignment way out of whack and tore off the driver's side rocker panel, and that's it. Nothing broken to my eyes. I suppose I should consider myself lucky; it could have been much worse.
