What have you done to your car today?

I have 27,000 on the Cooper but Michigan roads are killer on anything. I'm sure 27,000 miles on rough, pot hole laden roads doesn't help the squeaks and rattles all that much.

Erm... I can't compare like-for-like but most British roads are shocking. The French used to have the worst rep for road quality in Europe but by George we British are determined to beat them at something!

Seriously though... we have awful roads. A road in my home town was in many papers and magazines a few years back when it was discovered there had been over 9000 (okay, over 100) individual roadworks in a 24 month period, or thereabouts.

I didn't do much driving while I was there but is seemed like the roads around Oxford weren't to bad, although trying to drive there was awful. Maidenhead's roads were pretty good to, except for the random speed humps in the road. You guys don't seem to have nearly the amount of pot holes that we do here in Michigan. For whatever reason Michigan roads are terrible but the roads of the surrounding states and Windsor, ON are fine.

I think a lot of the rattles come from our bizarre weather, just last week we had a temperature range from 40 to 80. I can't imagine that's good on the plastic and what not.

I know all about squeaks and rattles, the MINI is full of them. Just turn the radio up .

The GTI has developed quite a few things that either rattle or vibrate or do what they do to make a lot of noise. I'm guessing that's due to many miles of the chewed up I-5 we have here.

Or just Mk5 build quality not being so great as former models.. :) I want your next post here to be "Today I fixed my rattles", like tomorrow or something.

Yesterday I installed two 12" subs and an amp.. My buddy did most of it, I just took out some seats and brought him some alcohol :)

I know what most of the rattles are. The center vent is in there pretty tight, and it vibrates in its slot on I-5, the spare tire used to squeak, one of the seats squeaks from time to time, one of the plastic panels on the roof rattled and the sunroof used to make noise.

But it doesn't really bother me because most of them only make noise when I go over a big bump or I'm on I-5. And that stretch of road is so ground up you wouldn't even care if the rattles were gone because of the tire noise and the fact that the whole car is bouncing and vibrating so much that the stereo doesn't help much.

Most Seattle streets are like that, and I almost prefer the smooth pavement with frequent potholes in Michigan to a constant bouncing and vibrating.

Haynes manuals are completely useless - removing struts required "serious mechanical competence", replacing tie rods was for the hobby mechanic. Um...
Okay, not completely useless just because of that, but I lol'd. My buddy bought one for his Golf, said nothing about swapping a steering rack for instance.

Speaking of, I bought a Chilton's manual for my Escort and a serpentine belt. Well, I bought the book, then went to the place I work and had them do the belt. I need my car for tomorrow, and I wouldn't have had it out and back in by the time I had to knock off.

Today, I didn't do much to my car but I did drive past the local school as they were leaving, and managed to stop the conversations of two groups of very attractive female sixth formers while they watched me drive past! :D

Now, if only it worked with girls my own age....

In store for today: getting tires rotated and one of them is getting a patch, from a stuck nail. Might even clean it out, but I dont think that's going to happen. I did find out where my oil was leaking from though, and it was not a good place. Front main seal is seaping and its going to cost a good amount to fix it, I just dont want to get bent over when I go to fix it.

Girl 1: "O-M-G That is so cute!"
Girl 2: "I like so totally want one!"
1: "I saw it first!"
2: "I don't care, daddy's buying me a pink one"

I jest :D

got them on.
Finally My General UHPs on the "flik" 5 spokes.

HAHAHAHAHA thats why I want to paint it white...
My 60yr old dad thought it was the shizznet though.
We asked him"what about the paint job"
and he said "WELL ITS GREAT!"
yep.....

I've never seen anything like that on a modern car before. It's so cool. Any kind of paint fad you could think of has been done on VWs and Hondas, but I have yet to see that conversion van style yet. Awesome! Seriously, you should keep it. I'd rock that so hard.

Really? uhhhh....

I suppose I can get some of the higher quality ones if you want?...

got the firebird in for mot on tuesday!
had some issues with a trans oil leak when running, where the line went in to the rad, no idea why it was fine before but now the bit that screwed in wouldnt hold the flared pipe in and so got a new longer piece to hopefully hold better now. then a leak out the fuel rail as we discovered another thing the cowboys had bodged, using a washer instead of a proper gasket.
drove it the furthest so far, backed out the drive then turned around and backed it up, exciting stuff! it really needs a good run to find out any more problems but of course i cant do that until its passed.

That's a very, very scary way to have the TL jacked up, Bubble Bunny. If that floor jack gives out or otherwise comes out from its position, not only are you probably getting a body part removed, the whole rear end is destroyed...I assume you had it in Park too, which allows some motion...:scared:

More like the mufflers and the dust shield around the rear brakes would be damaged, not much else, but yeah. The movement isn't really a problem though since the jack itself has got wheels on it. We used to move cars around the shop like that at school. Jack them up and pull the jack around.

Yeah though, use some jack stands next time.
