What have you done to your car today?

yea could do it online, but really i prefer getting it sorted and on the road instantly rather than five days. i guess it would be alright if it was continued taxing but this was from a SORN and iv been itching to drive it for 4 months!

My problem is that I always forget to do it online until the last minute and end up having to go into the post office anyway...

Hey PB Im in the same boat! A grand caravan stopped short in front of me and My Buicks brakes suck HARD and now I get to find a new headlamp and Grill! :) On the plus side I did get my buddies Exhaust system off of his RX7 and on to mine :P

Check the "What did you do to your car today" thread.

Oh wow, sorry about the crash man. Always sucks to see a fellow enthusiasts pride and joy get written off.

At the very least you will be able to part it out and get some of your investment back.

Are you having to pay anything towards damages to the guys truck?

PB, I missed your incident posts; sorry to hear about the mishap. Everybody else, take note, and BE CAREFUL OUT THERE.

On the OT, I replaced the front pads and rotors on my wife's TSX yesterday. It's only got about 28,000 miles on it, even though it's been on the road with us for about 4-1/2 years. But for at least the 10,000 miles, the pedal feel has been terrible with lots of vibration in the pedal (though none in the steering). The rotors didn't have any visible hot spots, but were somewhat worn radially. I suspect that the OEM pads were actually depositing crap on the rotors.

Either way, I couldn't stand it any more, and replaced the lot even though they probably would have lasted another year. I went with Brembo rotors and Akebono Street Performance ceramic pads. Haven't really had an opportunity to do more than bed them in a little, but I'm looking forward to a good drive.

One word:

DUMPED

I'm going to raise it a tad bit here in a couple days because right now it's a tad bit lower than Perfect Balance's car was. I just set it down to make my friends shut up about it. They're not the go-fast kind of people. And I also might add another washer on my UCA to correct the negative camber a slight bit more in the rear before I get it aligned. Screw paying over $150 for adjustables when using washers to space it out is tried and true.

Although nothing to the street racing exhaust we put in my friends.. :P

so iv been taking the firebird into town every day this week, the new dual core rad does wonders, takes longer than my astra to get over temperature, but it sure drinks lots! im working out about 15mpg. is great to drive though, so comfortable too. bit of a squeeze down residential streets, and i have to park on the end of rows if i want chance of getting out  also just me being on the road is a wind up for chavs it seems...yawn
the oil leak has slowed slightly, i did get some nice drip trays now though! the radio isnt too good, need to replace the welding rod aerial with something a bit better and the casette deck is jammed out. oh and the screenwash jets dont work. runs alright though, has a random cough when idling sometimes however, will service it and take it in for a proper tune tweak soon.

Solution for parking issues: Carry a floor jack in the trunk. ;)

Anyway that sort of fuel econ says something isn't quite right... I wouldn't expect even a V8 model to do that poorly unless it was a bit "off". Especially considering that's UK mpg.

I have to say, I don't think that's a factor of the radiator, seeing as the radiator has pretty much nothing to do with the coolant sitting dormant in the engine while the thermostat is closed. I call either old-engine syndrome, or there not being enough coolant in the system to make an accurate reading. Plausible, because you did just change the radiator, and flushing coolant is a pretty tricky excercise.

I'm sure the old engine is a bit off, but 15 mpg sounds perfectly reasonable for an old thing like that. My families G6 with the 3.4 only manages 19 in the city according to its econ readout.

Whoa, they still used the 3.4L LA1 in the G6? I had that in my Grand Am and it was not a reliable motor...Had nice low end though. Mileage of that and of the Firebird sound right to me. I got similar mileage in my GA, and it only got like 26mpg highway.

im sure it is a bit off but i was told by other owners that was about right, and 20-25 motorway driving.

and there is enough coolant in it now, i ran it for a while then flushed it again just to get rid of the remaining crap in the system, put new lot in then ran it a bit and topped it up.

I washed my car yesterday... It need it bad... After that I took my family that is visiting on a drive through a long twisting mountain road... And their was fog, it was excellent :)

This is what happens when you go to the clay pits after it raining for 3 days straight. There was a very deep hole and my friend didn't think it was that big since we've been there before. Was a very hard hit but everything is fine mechanically, I cant imagine what would have happened if he didn't have the guard.

Couple of words, amount of oil, quality on it, valve lifters. Ticking at start-up is because of lack of oil pressure.

Wow, that off-center "TARGA" would make me literally insane after less than 30 minutes driving with that. Other than that it looks like a nice wheel.

You don't really notice it while driving, but I'm thinking of letting a tailor remove the lettering.. :)

Got my car running again. Bad spark plugs and battery, but $15 worth of parts fixed that

Being as I'm no mean upholsterer myself, I let someone else do the hard work of restoring my cracked, ripped and faded seats, and the well-worn door pockets. Here's a few "before" photos:

old1h.jpg
old2.jpg

Note the cracking in the vinyl around the door pocket, and the mismatched drivers seat, as the previous owner only had the bottom of that seat re-covered. :dopey: Note also the cracking in the leather on both seats (the backrest of the drivers seat had a 10-inch rip along one seam and was showing the foam badly) and the old speakers which have also now been replaced, these speakers are being donated to bergauk's Mercury Comet Cyclone restoration project.

This is how things look now:

New upholstered door pocket, new speakers and the newly covered front seats which were also completely re-bolstered and cushioned. The guy also re-coloured the vinyl bar underneath the stereo & steering wheel to match the dash leather.

Another view of the re-covered seats, and freshly Armor-All'd interior.

Bizarre angled photo of the rear seats (difficult to shoot otherwise) which had their backing carpet and bracing board reworked for a much tidier finish. Also another view of the freshly cleaned & vacuumed interior from today.

Freshly washed and waxed after about 5 hours work on it today. 👍

*Edit* Duh! :dunce:
Got so carried away with posting photos of the interior & clean exterior :guilty: that I forgot to mention what I actually came in here to say in the first place!
Since we've had the car almost 2 years now, and it's not quite hit the 30-year old "classic" status, it was required to have another Smog Certification before it can be registered for this year. :scared:
Had it done today and it passed with flying colours! 👍

Smog Certification
Booooo. Ohio got rid of their E-Check a number of years ago, before I ever got my license. The result? Just about every one of my car buddies that have go-fast parts have gotten rid of their catalytic converters.

LOL, however when trying to get a shop do my friends exhaust none of them would touch it because it didnt come with a Cat; even though Minnesota doesnt have emission checking.

Serves him right for ruining the environment ;)
