What have you done to your car today?

Eric, nice kill man,and even the guys in V6 Mustangs think they're the **** with their cars until they're owned by the long grain rice burners.
I knew that Vibrant would sound good as they're great exhausts for the money.
Some pics of your ride would be nice too.
Be safe when racing like that too.

Pics (and/or story) or it didn't happen.

Does that mean it could be erased? :dopey: Anyway, story and pics:

Basically, I backed into a telephone pole.

My friend has a car port that I always back in to whenever I'm there. And there are two sides of two cars, and a telephone pole where the sides are divided, but out in front of the street.

My friend parallel parks across the street, and so when I'm pulling in I've gotten used to turning in front of him and then backing right into the car port. Today he was parked farther forward than usual, which I think messed up my sense of position and I backed up into the pole instead of going right past it like I usually would.

Yeah. I'm an idiot.

EDIT: Damage report:

I'll need a new lower bumper. I don't think that scratched plastic is fixable.
The painted bumper just needs to be pushed out. And there's a paint chip the size of a quarter that'll need to be fixed.
I'll need a new cover for the headlight.

I'll have to agree with you on that one.

Anywho, that sucks. Look at it this way, it could always end up worse.

Yeah. I guess I could have scraped it along the side of the car...

Is it bad that I'm actually crying over a car? The only time I ever remember crying...

Please tell me you mean TAIL light and that you didn't turn the car around and smash into the pole head-on to teach it some respect.

That dent can be pushed right out if you get underneath the bumper, get a hand in there, and push it right out.
You'll still have the scratches but the dent should just pop right back into shape again with barely a noticeable impression.

Good luck with it.

It may well have been a V6 with an exhaust and 17s, Eric.

1. V6 owners are mouthy scumbags with slow cars for the most part.
2. Hood and rear bumper aside there is no difference between a 2002+ GT and V6. 99-01 GTs look identical to V6s aside from the rear bumper (and 17" vs 16" wheels)
3. A GT would absolutely murder you from about 60 onward.

Not at all. I know the guy, know the car. It was a legit win against a GT.

Oh, and Misnblue, forgot to answer you about going catless...I'm gonna pair the catback up with the Vibrant race header w/high flow cat. Keep the noise down a bit and most of the smell too.

And pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ericbiggs/sets/72157620604061451/

None up with tint or the exhaust though, I need to get around to uploading stuff.

Not necessarily with the current Si's & last gen. Mustangs. 4th Gen GT's normally weighed around 3,300lbs with the Si around 2,950lbs, & although there is a relatively good distance in power, the Si does pull pretty good up to 100Mph.

I actually couldn't find a way to get in there. As soon as it happened we were looking for some way to get a hand to the bumper and couldn't find anything.

If I could figure out how to take the thing apart, the bumper is $100 and I'm sure the taillight covers can't be too bad. Buff out the minor scratches around the area and I'm sure telling the body shop that they just have to fix that chip would bring the cost way down.

Nice Si Eric and very sleeper for those that don't know they have 190hp under the hood.

Philly, all cars are made to be taken apart.
Now it's time for you to invest in a service manual for your car.
No tuner should be without one and I've got one for each car that I drive. Actually, I've got several manuals including the actual factory service manuals.
Good investment man but good luck with your dent man. It shouldn't be that difficult for a body shop to remove it.

So you want to keep the car looking it's best, but you're willing to buy an aftermarket replacement (can't be an oem unit at that kind of price) bumper to tack on there?

Did you really think this through?

I've found a few DIY things on VWVortex and such. So that rear valence should come off pretty easily. Neither Chiltons nor Haynes have a manual for the car though. I might see if I can get my hands on a factory manual or something if I'm going to start working on it more.

Unless that's not an OEM site, which it says it is. I'm just talking about the lower plastic valence panel, since that can't be repainted or sanded to look better.

Philly, you can get used factory service manuals from ebay and online.
You'll have to do some research on it and even if you don't get the exact year as your ride, a year difference won't usually make that much of a difference in the components of the car.
I bought a used 1998 factory service manual for my 1997 car because knowing the car well enough, knew that there were no changes from the two year models and all the information would be good for the 1997.

Anyway, good luck man, and accidents do happen to all of us. Now's the time to learn how to fix your mistakes and make it better. :)

It's going to be more expensive than you think.

You'll need a new taillight. The covers are not removable.

If it's a two peice bumper, you may be able to replace the grey plastic half. However, I believe the GTI is a one piece unit. Plan on a new bumper.
There is also a foam peice that sits under the bumper cover - This may need replacement as well.

If you're going to try and push the bumper out rather than replace it, note a couple things:
-It's unlikely to completely return to its' original shape. The plastic may well have stretched a bit where the dent is.
-If the paint hasn't cracked and chipped already, working it cold will do so. Use heat in conjunction with tools to bring it back out.

Or you could take it to a bodyshop.

Yeah, I'm thinking the taillight will need replacement.

I've found DIY things on VWVortex that show how to take the grey plastic bumper off, so I'm sure that's replaceable. I'll probably get under the car sometime soon to make sure there's no damage to the internals of the bumper.

But I'm thinking I'll just take it to the body shop for everything. I might ask them for quotes with to without replacing the grey bumper to see if I can maybe save a bit of money there.

I finally took some pictures of the restorations.

Accord_front.jpg

Right in-bumper blinker [above those are aftermarket corner signals from a previous owner; they've got orange squares from the factory]. It was completely missing since I've owned the car. $15 for a used one at Honda Menders. Unfortunately the plastic mounts were broken, so it's held in there with a zip-tie. The high-beams I installed were also missing the whole time. They've already been very useful.

Accord_rear.jpg

Right outside taillight housing had a nice chunk broken off of it. Picked up a slightly water-filled replacement at a junkyard for $14 (including paying admission for me and a friend).

Accord_stereo.jpg

The new deck. You can see some markings on the sides of the aftermarket molding. I used a dremel tool to grind off some clips that were in the way, and wasn't as careful as I could have been. The shavings left a nasty mess.

Accord_muffler.jpg

The Magnaflow and a bit of new piping. If I were to clean that rust up and spray on some preventative WD40, would it catch fire from operating temps?

Today I just cleaned my intake filter (it's drying as I type this). I should have time before work on Friday to get my rusted exhaust piping from the cat back to a little in front of the muffler done. I'm leaving the resonator out.

:dunce: Should've realized that. Any way to prevent rust then, or am I just going to have to keep a close eye on it?

Some high temperature paint by Duplicolor would work nicely on that to prevent the rust.
They make the 500F degreee and the 1200F degree paint that is ceramic based.
This stuff works sell for that part of your exhaust and won't burn off.
That'll stop the rust for sure.

If you don't want it to rust for aesthetic purposes, then paint it. If you're just trying to keep the bolts from seizing up, then just put some anti seize on the threads.
