I finally finished making custom .wim images of Windows 8.1 via VM machines. Going to install 8.1 on all of the computers on my home network via PXE boot.

Built a new machine.

It's the best.

I'mma guess it's an Intel Haswell chip cooled by an H110i, An ASUS M/B, 16GB of Corsair Dominator Platnium RAM and an EVGA GTX780 ACX.

WD Green drives, on display

I guess I'm not the only one who actually likes to see hard drives. Everyone reckons their ugly, I reckon they're not if played right.

So I just got my new Dell U2312HM, and it's awesome, as expected, but... There's a dead pixel. Just sitting there in all its blackness, staring at me. I'm about to get in touch with Amazon to get it replaced.

I have not upgraded. Do you advise against it?

I might just give it a shot, right after I make my image file. :)

I haven't bothered jumping to 8.1, either. Once I had pokki installed and got my Start button back, I've been a happy camper. :D

I'm throwing caution to the wind and I'm going for it! :D

Ok well....I am now on Windows 8.1 and am booting to the desktop instead of that stupid tiled interface that I always had to get rid off before I could start using my computer.

So far so good! :)

I still got lots of trouble with the sounds coming and going completely (and random volume changes) in certain games.

Want to get the EVGA 770 Backplate but they won't ship it here! :tear:

But yeah pretty happy with it. Runs BF4 like a champ.

I'm too afraid of Windows 8. I'm going to stick to 7 for now.

 You should be afraid. It has been pretty solid for me though. No complaints other than the tiles, but 8.1 has addressed that so I'm good.

So yeah, upgraded to 8.1, made my desktop the default for startup, and made a art gallery website for a client. Now it's time for bed. Ugh.

Got the replacement monitor today, it's delicious. Now I need to do something about the flies in here. There are about three or four houseflies looming because of the guinea pigs behind me and they enjoy landing on my monitors to deposit that crap they leave around the place. Not on my new Ultrasharp, thank you very much.

I installed some new 120mm case fans (and realized in the process that I hadn't connected one that came with the case :dunce:) and added a second 92mm to the CPU cooler. I went from one CPU and one case fan to 2 CPU and 5 case fans. Kind of. One of the case fans power wires are too short. Could I cut and extend with like gauge wire or should I hunt down an extension cablle?

Pics, and yes, there's something missing. I'm working on that.

You are almost up to box fan status. When you make the transition, it will set you free my friend! :D

I've been trying to set up my Mac so I can stream video from my Raspberry Pi to it (using the RPi Camera), but mplayer is refusing to build and opening the Pi as a network stream from VLC doesn't work either. I'm going to try it with my PC, and if that fails I might even try Linux... All this command line stuff is weird, though, I don't get it and I have no idea where anything is being installed. I wish I was good at this stuff and I guess this is how you learn, but yeah. I imagine the trouble I'm having now is because of Mavericks, but eh.

I'm now going to try something a little simpler; set it up so I can press a button wired directly to it so that the camera takes a photo.

My CPU is running a rather lovely 89°F right now so for the time being, I'm good! When I need to remotely locate my tower to the basement for the box fan conversion, I'll give you a call. :P

 You got it!

Well, I've messed up one of the kids PCs trying to upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. While the users and user directories were still there, all the apps were gone. Ended up doing a clean Windows 8.1 install, and re-installed everything, including every little driver. Maybe I shouldn't have downloaded the iso and should have just done the update. :irked: Haven't done mine yet, still not sure.

Oh, and TB, I'd look for an extension cable. Then again, that may just be me.

I put my other Arduino Leonardo to use as an automated audio output switcher. Since I found out I can mirror my main monitor on the 58" TV behind me I've left it mirrored, but switching the audio from TV to headphones was getting tedious. Now I just press a button and it toggles the two, it's super basic (it just emulates a keyboard and presses shortcut keys) and I need to have a reset button in there for when they get out of sync, but it's already appreciably useful. Now all I need is love something to switch my headphones between my PC and PS3 and I'll be set. Maybe I'll get a VGA cable for my 360 Core and set that up with this monitor too, that'll need a headphone switch too.

Oh I missed both the defective one and this one! Glad you got it sorted though, they're just excellent.

Thanks, yeah, it's really nice. I have one of my old Samsungs running alongside it and the difference is unbelievable, though the upgrade from 1680x1050 wasn't so noticeable as the pixel density is more or less the same. Still, it was worth the upgrade.

I just finished crafting a VGA cable for my Xbox 360 out of the old component cable and a, well, a VGA cable, so now I have my PC, PS3 and 360 hooked up to that monitor (via DisplayPort, DVI and VGA respectively). It's nice to make use of all these things. I also ordered the parts to make a headphone switch and a pedal which will be my FRAPS/Steam screenshot/Shadowplay capture key, hopefully they'll arrive before the weekend.

Haha yeah, for me it's the Ultrasharp running as my primary monitor next to a crappy bargain bin 22" TV that I use as a secondary. Even though they're both 1080p and the pixel density is actually higher on the 22" TV, it just looks so much worse than the Dell. Even plain text is much harder to read, and that's without talking about colors and the like.

I can't wait to get the next two, that's for sure... Triple monitor sim racing on these will be awesome.

I made my headphone switch today, then got really bored and made an anglepoise lamp out of Lego, a 1W 100 lumen power LED, a low drop-out 3.3V regulator (which can be happily run from a 5V supply) and an old composite video cable. I should have my girlfriend temporarily move in more often, I make so much stuff when I'm not gaming... Oh and I added the screenshot/video capture pedal to the Leonardo too, so far it just 'presses' F12 when I hit the pedal but I might add a toggle for screenshots or Shadowplay, though that might be more work than just pressing alt or ctrl when tapping the pedal.

Toys are definitely better when you made them yourself for very little money (ok, the Arduino Leonardo was a little expensive)! I do need to start buying sheet material along with components though, all the panel mount connectors and switches that are hanging around the place are getting a little untidy.
