Don Jon (2013)

The first film written and directed by the guy from Looper (2012) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). It's very entertaining on a quiet night in. I'd give it a 7/10 but because Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a Chuck Norris by starring in a film he both wrote and directed it gets a bonus point for me. 8/10

Walking with Dinosaurs (2013)

Agreed to watching this film because I was a fan of dinosaurs since I got a 1-foot tall plastic T-Rex for a Christmas present when I was five. If you can get over the overly simplistic script that accommodates for an audience that is below ten years old you might just enjoy it. The CGI just about makes up for the things that are wrong with the movie. If you have young family members by all means take them to see it if you're getting movie tickets for a dollar (or free). 5/10

EDIT:

Recently saw this too.

Ender's Game (2013)

Now for a film that's aimed at children/adolescents this I very much enjoyed. Wasn't exactly "wowed" by this movie's trailers but had a big grin on my face once I actually saw it. Haven't read the books so naturally don't have the bias that you'd get from other reviews of the film. If you used to play the Command and Conquer strategy games on PC (or something similar) you might find this movie appealing also. Highly recommended. 9/10

I watched Don Jon for the first time. It was a scary movie for me.

I feel like and have the same wants as Scarlett Johansson's character, but I have the flaws of Levitt's character. It is a tug of war on my soul and made the movie painful to watch. I have an addiction, and I'm afraid punching out car windows every day will ruin my life. I hope things will work out for me so I'm not stuck with Julianne Moore.

47 Ronin

Based on a "true" story (stripped back to the bare essentials so minus all the mythical creatures, witches etc) it was a good film, nothing more but nothing less, good. I was expecting more action but there was a fair bit, in hindsight we did spend a lot of time staring at close ups of Keanu Reaves face.
If you enjoy Asian myths and sorcery and all that shizz, give it a go.

7/10

I'm so disappointed they did this to the story. All they needed to do was stick to the actual story of what happened and it could have been a master piece of history in the movies. Great story only needed to be told, not imagined and completely distorted.

Lately I've watched a few movies...

Night Watch and Day Watch were both great movies but Russian with subtitles. Basic premise- supernatural thriller with all sorts of unique ideas. Very cool movies, sorry to see they probably aren't going to make a third movie. :(
Good none the less.

Jack Reacher
OK, not great, well done for what it was but it wasn't much more than the typical action flick. I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise so it was a bit worse for that but otherwise tolerable and still packed a decent punch in fight sequences.

Old Boy
The original.
Great movie but a bit strange and full of taboos I don't particularly want to see or hear stories about... Good movie but not for the children or the faint of heart.

Man Of Steel 3D

I am not a huge fan of superman but wow just wow INCREDIBLE movie!!!! I was blown away by how awesome this movie was. In fact I watched it twice last night! The excellent storyline, amount of destruction, CGI, and everything else made this one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. I would put this right up there with The Avengers. I give this a 9.8/10!!

Pain and Gain... oh my god what a terrible movie.
Yes Pain and Gain is easily one of the worst movies I have seen in years. Just terrible.

Pain and Gain is actually quite good for a Michael Bay movie. It's nice to see his work not being dominated by alien robots for a change. I'd go as far as saying it's a more well-rounded film than the two Bad Boys movies but I should probably watch those again before you quote me on that

Speaking of movies that are quite good if you can get over some minor drawbacks here's a list I found quite handy - http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff-nation...9580588/Five-bad-films-that-are-actually-good - great for getting ideas on what movies to watch if you don't want to see any more comic book adaptations.

You should at least re-watch Bad Boys 2 for sure. There is simply NO way Pain and Gain is better than BB2. Those two movies should not even be mentioned in the same sentence. BB2 is a Michael Bay masterpiece IMO.

Letters from Iwo Jima

I really enjoyed this movie, I've ranked it up there with Enemy at the Gates and Saving Private Ryan.

I usually like seeing war movies from the Axis side, especially the Japanese, and this one is really well done.
It's a 2 hour+ movie and I never lost interest, which would normally never happen.

Going to have to see Flags of our Fathers now.

Traces_of_Death_FilmPoster.jpeg

Traces of Death - A shockumentary film like Faces of Death, but with a higher percentage of real footage. Some pretty grisly stuff... definitely not for the faint of heart!

Unfortunately, one of the more interesting sequences (man eaten by lions) is almost certainly fake... or maybe that'd be fortunate? :P

I've been quite busy this weekend, or actually I wasn't.... I have watched these movies:

Rush
Very nice! Despite knowing the story and the outcome I still felt on the edge of my seat. 8/10

Man of Steel
This was the second time I watched it. The plothole are insane. So despite me wanting to like it I really dislike it. 5/10

The great Gatsby
Not what I expected. It is actually a drama. I liked it. It's visual style and DiCaprio's acting really made me care. 8/10

The Hobbit, an unexpected journey
Surely not as good as the first trilogy. It is more of a introuction than a stand alone film. I also disliked the specialeffects. Sometimes it was very bad. Still, it is nice to see al the little steps that will eventually lead to the fist trilogy. 7/8

I did not think Wolf of Wall Street was that great. I thought it dragged quite a bit after about the 45 minute to hour mark. I knew pretty quickly how it was going to end. I have read enough about scumbag bankers to know that was the direction the movie was going to go and I did not even know the main character was based on a real person.

Why would you say so? I'm honestly curious. Red Alert 2 and Generals were my favorites. :D I'm staying away from the movie because it seems like the usual generic sci-fi crap aimed at the generic mass audience.

Also, I am really psyched about Wolf of Wall Street because it has 569 instances of the F words according IMDb.
Unfortunately, since it's not screening in my ass backwards country, I'll have to wait for the Blu-ray/DVD release. :banghead:

Well without revealing Ender's Game spoilers, a big theme in the movie is strategy. Watched Wolf of Wall Street last week also. For a 3 hour movie it is probably the longest comedy I've enjoyed. Ever.

Gravity

Well that was an awful movie.

No story.

No acting.

The only redeeming feature was the visuals.

If I wanted to see cool space stuff I would've watched Timescapes.

The World's Fastest Indian (2005)

Worlds_fastest_indian.jpg

A feel good movie if ever there was one, and based on the true story of one Burt Munro, a new Zealander in the 1960's whose dream was to take his 1920 Indian Scout, modified in his garden shed, to Bonneville to run.

The story, with a few embellishments along the way tells the story of his incredible journey to Bonneville, in a time when amateur racer was king and willpower to run at speed topped everything. Hopkins gets the accent a bit hashed up but portrays a highland, happy mate character very well and you really cannot help but like Munro's portrayal as a result. The historic references to landspeed racers of the time (Flying Caduceus etc) are nice touches and the replica Indian is awesome.

If you like bikes or speed, this is definitely one to watch, iffy cinematography aside. 8/10

It's not. If you are familiar with the book, you'd know it isn't your typical sci-Fi. The sci-Fi stuff is really background eye candy to a deeper story with a very heavy meaning.

The desolation of Smaug
Well this movie is all filler. I couldn't care if these dwarf live or die. The role of Gandalf however is somewhat interesing, but that will hopefully pay off in the final part of this trilogy. 6/10

Escape plan
Despite some originality, a basic escape from prison movie. It is fun seeing Arnie and Sly in a movie together as lead actors, but they both show their age, or is it me? Anyway enjoyable action flick. 7/10

GRUDGE MATCH
Just got done watching it and seeing Deniro and Sly together made for a good movie. It's a comedy so don't expect it to be a serious movie like the old Rocky movies. The movie was fantastic i'd give it an 8.5 out of ten, Now I'm going to go buy a weeks worth of Butterscotch Jellybeans.

Lone Survivor
This movie was based off of a true story which made me cautious at first because most of the time they turn out poorly. But the movie was done very well and i feel like it didn't fall into the category of being another 2% story 98% garbage. The movie is an absolutely must see. I watched this movie with some of my friends who are all U.S. Military and whom all have served at least 2 tours in the Middle East, They liked the movie themselves even though one of them had to step outside for a little bit. The story is warm and heartfelt and it gives a great understanding of the brotherhood within the armed forces. I'd give the movie a solid 10 which is something i never do. I wanted to say 9.5 but i honestly can't think of a reason to deduct points.

Escape Plan
I'm going to keep this one short because i agree with the previous review of it on here. The Movie was good, Sly and Arnold made the movie good. Any other actors and i feel that the movie would blow. There are some very unrealistic parts of the movie that will make you scratch your head. Like i said it's good it's not great. It's is worth a watch but don't expect a movie like The Rock or The Great Escape, 6.5/10

I Seen this movie a while back and enjoyed it very much. It's a good watch even if your not into Automotive culture or interested in motorcycles. I agree with the 8/10 rating.

Recently watched Mean Girls (the most quoted film in my groups of friends) and Easy A. Both were excellent, so much more than I expected. I'm not surprised Mean Girls is so quoted I found it hilarious and Easy A is filled with all the humour I hear from my favourite friends. I recommend you watch both. :)

Edit: Just watched Juno and that too is also amazing!

Beautiful, magical and one of the best movies I've seen in years. Definitely recommend it, go see it now.

Believe it or not, Ender's Game was such an impressive book regarding strategy and conflicts of morals and ethics that the USMC now holds it as suggested reading for officers and officer candidates.

The U.S. Marine Corps Professional Reading List makes the novel recommended reading at several lower ranks, and again at Officer Candidate/Midshipman.[17] The book was placed on the reading list by Captain John F. Schmitt, author of FMFM-1 (Fleet Marine Fighting Manual, on maneuver doctrine) for "provid[ing] useful allegories to explain why militaries do what they do in a particularly effective shorthand way."[18] In introducing the novel for use in leadership training, Marine Corps University's Lejeune program opines that it offers "lessons in training methodology, leadership, and ethics as well [....] Ender's Game has been a stalwart item on the Marine Corps Reading List since its inception."

I suggest avoiding the wiki page itself since you might get major spoilers.

Ender's Game and the 2nd Hobbit (as the 1st), read the books! I really felt let down by how shallow Ender's game was, and how much was left out. Though the kid actor was good, and I'd still give it a solid 7/10. And Jackson continuing with the ridiculous. Rankin Bass animated Hobbit movie from like 1980 is all you need, so satisfying.

Wolf of Wall Street. A little taken aback by this, no immediate response, which usually means a good movie. Certainly a bit long. Should have been more concise. But... somehow impressive. Very in-character, 80's not much visited lately, no complaints about settings/costumes/writing... somewhat unpredictable, complex characters. Cautionary tale? Or just slice of life? 8/10?

Just seen Nolan's the Prestige

Starring Bale,Jackman, Johansen ,Hall and Michael Caine .

What can I say, loved it alot this is easily one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen, The Ending in particular is very Bioshock infinite interms of "Whoahhh factor" ,best thing I felt is how you can't at most times choose who to root for Jackman or Bale, both portray their roles exceptionally well.

Very well written movie I feel, it's a very Nolan esque movie where you'd have to concentrate during the whole movie as you don't want to miss much.

So great acting, plot and characters (Maybe the Tesla trick was silly and unrealistic)but I didn't really care that much about it. 9.5/10

I just saw Skyfall.

What an incredible bad James Bond movie. Javier is the worst Bond villain ever. The first half of the movie is basically a videoclip, whithout the music. As if the director wanted to show what had learnt at filmaking school. The second half was better but by no means a bond movie. 5/10

"The Great Gatsby"

Being and English teacher, it seemed like compulsory viewing. And it has been wildly celebrated here in Australia, mostly because of local involvement.

I can safely say that this is a terrible film. It completely missed the point of the source material, and so badly misinterpreted the key themes that it became a celebration of everything the source material was opposed to.

I have never seen a film based on an original work that so clearly did not understand that work.

The secret life of Walter Mitty
secret_life_of_walter_mitty_ver2_xlg.jpg

High hopes, but disappointment. If you can suspend belief and accept plot holes you can drive a bus through, it is enjoyable enough but really only skims the surface of what 'following your dreams' really means. Ben Stiller has the opportunity to step out of his type-casting but doesn't do so convincingly. At least its a short flick and has some nice soundtracks - 5/10

Frances Ha (2012)
Frances-Ha-Poster.jpg

Frances and lives with her best friend Sophie in Brooklyn. Life is not going that well - work is a battle, as is money, but they are each other's net. Then Sophie decided to move to Manhattan and leaves Frances to figure out her life on her own. The plot is simple enough, but the journey Frances follows is one that probably applies to millions all over the world. What do you do when you friends move up in the world and your wake up to how ordinary your station is. Do you continue the charade, do you recede even further or do you throw away your ideas of what you wanted to be and try again? I enjoyed this movie; the acting was simple but subtle and the story had an ending which lent legitimacy of the themes explored. 8/10
