"Black Swan"

I have never been a big Darren Aronofsky fan, and "Black Swan" probably demonstrates why. When it comes to this kind of visceral psychological thriller, you really need to strike a fine balance in how you present the content you want the audience to interpret, and I feel Aronofsky was a little too obtuse in how he handled it. Ironically, the best interpretation of the film is about the need to strike a balance.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy it.

Elysium

I didn't care much for this movie at all. It didn't help that I had no idea what Kruger (Sharlto Copley) was saying through the entire movie. Sounded like he had a mouth full of marbles every time he spoke. Just not a good movie. The movie also changed language a few times which forced sub titles. It also had one of the most ridiculous moments I have seen in a movie in a long time. I will just say it involves Sharlto Copley toward the end. I would post it but the spoiler tags are not working properly.

I really enjoyed Elysium when I watched it a few weeks ago

I watched Rush on Saturday night....WHAT A FILM!!

I convinced my dad to watch it last month. While he's rarely ever phased by graphic stuff, he still cringed during that scene with Kruger.

Spoilers > Reconstructing the destroyed face of a dead man who they only managed to reanimate because his brain somehow remained intact after a direct grenade blast was ridiculously fantastical. Even in a world where any disease or ailment can be cured by a bed in mere seconds.

Overall it was a bit of a letdown. Having heard many people say they really enjoyed Elysium while some didn't think highly of it. The final 15 minutes had some decent action, but the other 90 minutes it simply plodded along and felt tedious.

@Wiegert Yes that is the exact scene I am talking about. Just WAY beyond ridiculous. Kruger's character in general was just very poorly played. There were quite a few bad parts but that one obviously stuck out as one of the most pathetic scenes I have seen in a movie.

He really is the sort of villain you love to hate. Not only because of the actions he takes, but because of the way he was portrayed by Sharlto. He laid the South African accent on so thick that it was often incoherent and off-putting. Even though his character was supposed to portray a psychopathic killer with more than a few screws loose, it was more than a little irritating after a while.

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade (2007)

Vintage footage from 1982 or so, a few great moments, mostly depressing, though also, as a former math prodigy, I really personally identified with them all getting together for the first time in Iowa, and finally meeting people who might possibly be as good as them (like when I went to math camp.) Worth watching just for the 4 seconds of a guy playing Centipede, freaking unbelievable control and anticipation, wish there was more of this kind actual top-quality gameplay footage included... Still, for me, 9/10, probably 7/5/10 for most people, still a good watch.

Akira was playing on the big screen at the local theatre. Haven't seen it since I was a teen, and went with a coworker who's big into anime (that's pretty much the only one I've watched). Added bonus of it being super-cheap. Anywho, such an incredible movie even today; seeing it in large format really let me appreciate the animation. It also feels just as relevant, if not more so, now, despite being 26 years old. It definitely sparked two hours of discussion about the human condition afterwards, which I think all good movies should be capable of doing.

If I have to give this a number rating, a 9.5/10 seems about right.

On of the few movies lately that has lived up to the hype; stunning visual and audio effects and a story that whilst a little fetched, is a compelling on. An unbelievably small cast deliver a really believable and relate-able story, although I could have done without the religious references in the odd part. 9/10

I've recently watched Ron Howard's "Rush" and I think it is great. I never thought the film would be that great at first, after seeing some CG stuff and all (That F3 scene looks obviously CG) and the Monza part not really being at Monza at all. Overall I'd definitely recommend this film to all of you.

Saw this last night after being ecstatic it came back in full IMAX and 3D after the Hobbit bumped it out for a few months. Such a stunning technical achievement - to think that first shot is 17 minutes of uninterrupted action is just mind-blowing. The pacing was great, the editing superb - it feels lean and focused - and I've never had so many moments in a single movie where I've sat and wondered how they pulled it off. Barring a few horror/suspense films, I've also never felt as tense; it really sucked me in.

Would absolutely recommend people pay the extra money to see it in the full-fat version - this is one movie I think justifies it. 9/10 at the very least!

Yeah, Gravity's amazing... I had to see it twice in IMAX 3D.

And speaking of Alfonso Cuarón's work, I finally got around to watching Children of Men last night. Wow, what a movie. Just like Gravity, it's nothing short of breathtaking, albeit in a very different way.

1 The Movie

If it wasn't for it being in the "Also Bought" section of the Amazon page for Rush, I would have never heard of this movie. That of course made me unsure of what to expect but decided for $10 on Blu Ray it was worth a shot. What it is is pretty much a brief history lesson on F1 as well as the drivers that have been lost driving the cars. There are also quite a few driver interviews featuring drivers and other key people from pretty much every era from about 1960 to today. Unfortunately for a documentary that is supposed to focus on safety in the sport they don't go into very deep detail on what changes were made from various periods. I would recommend it though as it features tons of great racing footage, a great soundtrack and (as stated) plenty of interviews.

[7/10]

Note: As this is a documentary about the safety of F1, there is footage of fatal crashes(Nothing too graphic though).

We saw The Lego Movie tonight just for a laugh, since so many people are taking Valentine's day seriously (and so many of the good restaurants in town either had a prix fixe menu, were all booked, or both). It was actually a lot of fun - a good bunch of laughs, much like any of the Pixar films. Liam Neeson's comedic work is something we all should get more of

How would I describe this movie?

Boiler Room + some R18 embellishments. Nothing new, and hour too long and glamourising the defrauding of thousands of people. Disappointing for me.

5/10

The LEGO Movie:

Absolutely phenomenal, the best animation I have ever seen, just pipping Toy Story and How To Train Your Dragon. Hilarious throughout and with a cast that makes any A-list movie look shy. Totally recommended.

9.8/10

Looking forward to seeing the LEGO movie 👍.. my sister took my nephew to see it and she said it was awesome too..

I saw "The Notorious Bettie Page" (biopic of the pin-up model starring a mostly naked and utterly gorgeous Gretchel Mol) this evening - I recorded it on YouView, and I might even watch it with the sound on next time.

It's times like this I wish I had a son. You guys are getting to see LEGO Movie while I just watched Frozen for the third time.

Oh, and I hear all the songs non-stop.

Hard to compare. Obviously, it's one of the funniest movies I've ever watched, and the pacing is bang-on perfect. But while it does touch on the philosophical at points, it doesn't quite have the deep humanity of something like How To Train Your Dragon or even Wreck-it Ralph.

Let's put it this way... the Lego Movie is the "Avengers" of Kiddie movies. It's an absolute blast to watch, but you are never, at any moment, scared of what's going to happen to the main character. You're just along for the ride.

Hell, they kill off an important character partway through the film, and it's played for laughs rather than seriousness.

Two girls. And a wife. Still watched the Lego Movie. It's suitable for adults, little boys and little girls. There's even a brony level for those so inclined. :D

It actually sounds ridiculously stupid.

Hard Candy:

Not for the viewer with a lack of balls when it comes to torture scenes. Great Performance by Ellen Paige.

6.5/10

I'm just getting into Coen Brothers films, I can't believe I've never seen any before!

Just watched O Brother Where Art Thou, 8/10.
