The wife's been stuck on the PC all day, so I was inevitably stuck to the TV watching movies. I was tempted to play GT4, but I have so many movies to watch, I just couldn't resist:

Little Children (2006) -- I'm starting to enjoy Kate Winslet... I've seen a few movies where she apepars lately, and after thinking her such a prude in Titanic and whatever she did immediately after, she's growing on me... strictly as a good actress, she's still very unattractive. Anyway, the movie's alright... reminded me of Magnolia, in the sense that there's a lot of stories that someway entwine in the end. Jennifer Connely (although brief) is very nice in the movie too. 8/10

I felt the adulterers relationship was very real, but in the end it takes such a moral note that I wasn't really convinced about how the characters ended up.

Lucky Number Slevin (2006) -- Everyone's seen it, everyone's loved it. I'm no exception. Could've done without Lucy Liu... was this girl on speed when she did her parts? I had to rewind so many times to figure out what the hell she was saying... she talks so fast! Maybe a bit too graphic at the start? I'm not going to add more to the critique... great movie. 9/10

Mad Max (1979) -- Great classic. The movie ages very well... it's almost 30 years old and still impressive in many ways. I was lucky enought to get the non-dubbed version... why someone would dub a movie in English into English is beyond me, but hey. 7.5/10

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) -- One of those rare occasions where the sequel is better than the original... maybe not better, but equally good at least. My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember the Road Warrior...
7.5/10

Finished watching "Lucky Slevin" today. I didn't mind it, simply because of the loaded cast(Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Josh Hartnett, Ben Kingsley, Lucy Liu). But it was WAY too predictable.

Since the films like "The Sixth Sense", "Se7en", "Usual Suspects", there's been too many movies that attempt to hit the audience with that big surprise ending. Instead of shocking anybody, I think all they have succeeded in was cheapening the technique. Overused gimmick.
:P:P:P:P

My DVD has both tracks. How thoughtful! 👍

So I just got done watching Crank. I didn't hate it but I wouldn't watch it again, had enough action to keep me entertained and there was virtually no plot. The acting was average and the "special effects" were rather cheesy. The ending was pretty meh as well. Guess it was a good way to kill 90 minutes.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - Well, that wasn't expected! My friend told me that I could choose between this film, or "I Am Legend" at the cheap theater tonight. Although I've seen the Legend already, I chose it over Sweeney, because who'd wanna see a film called Sweeney Todd?(I didn't know about the "Demon Barber" at this point). But when he told me that it starred Johnny Depp, I told him I'll gauge it at rottentomatoes.com. It got 85% approval from the critics, 89% from the fans. Very good rating. Naturally, we got to see the Demon Barber this evening. Sorry about the longest intro to some movie I saw.

When the movie started, there was another thing about the film that I didn't know; it's a musical! A Tim Burton musical. I usually hate musicals, but I did really enjoy(and own on DVD) classics like the "Sound of Music" and "Moulin Rouge". When the singing started, immediately I realized that I like this film. The opening is very dark(almost black & white), and very cool. I was thinking that this must be the first time I thought "cool" about these broadway musical type flick. Johnny Depp to me looked very badass.

Story is about a evil & powerful judge(Alan Rickman) banishing a super talented barber(Depp) to steal his wife, then the barber comes back over a decade later in full revenge mode.

The movie is a black comedy, but it is EXTREMELY violent, with countless meaningless murdering. If you can get passed that, lots of blood, and some disgusting.... stuff, this one's most definitely worth the admission. Acting is superb for most part, cinematography, camera work and SFX are A+. Depp was amazing, and this could be his best work yet. Score is one of the best I have ever heard.

I don't know if I'll ever buy this one on DVD, as I'm not keen on Tim Burton's style, or the film's over the top violence. But you gotta watch it at least once, if you can stomach a musical. "A+"

Watched Hot Fuzz tonight and I loved it. It was over the top and had a good bit of British humour in it. Simon Pegg was pretty good in it as well and I thought the acting was fairly good all around.

I'm finding I like British movies, any recommendations?

Such an awesome movie, have you seen Shaun of the Dead as well? I watched both of those movies together, they're both great!

Hot Fuzz was alright, but if you haven't seen Shaun of the Dead, you are in for a treat. That one is a classic.

I watched this one the other month and forgot to update in here about it! ... damn it's a wicked movie for anyone who likes a good gritty british gang movie :)

If you are under 18 I would warn in advance it has some violent scenes with lots of bad language ... just the way I like em :sly:

I like the "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels". How about "L4YER CAKE"? I personally enjoy Frech films a lot more, and there are some German ones I really like as well.

I take it you've seen Dobermann?

If not, it's my #1 recommendation... the premiere euro violence movie, to the point that it's absurd and funny.

Layer Cake is good. not much as good as lock stock or snatch but it's great to watch it.

I recommend Revolver and Man Machine as well 👍

The Simpsons Movie 6.5/10

I'd read plenty of good stuff about this film when it first came out, so was expecting great things. I'd almost bought it on DVD earlier that day but had noticed that it was available on Sky Box Office at a cheaper price, even if i was only able to watch it just the once. Thankfully i think i made the right choice. Although it was in no way a bad film, it was in my opinion no better than the average 'good' Simpsons TV episode and therefore a little disapointing. I also thought the jokes in it were not quite as sharp or knowing as they can be on the TV show. I was also hoping they might have made something more of it, like the guys from South Park did with their big screen 'musical' version of the TV show, but unfortunately it seems that Groening missed a trick there and just gave us more of the same (which in itself is no bad thing).

This would sum it up for me. Over the top in a way that adds humor and is entertaining enough to make you hate it. But every time I see it on DVD I think it isn't worth it.

Side not: They are making a Crank 2, with Statham. That just screams blockbuster right there. [/sarcasm]

You summed up my experiance with the film, the only thing is i got it on BD for £10 so ithoght it was worth that at least.

Sprite
The Simpsons Movie BD

Ok film, not as funny as I was expecting, and it was more like a highly polished and extended version of and average episode. Dose look sweet on BD if not a little too vibrant and I suspect would look far out on some kind of narcotic.

Balls Of Fury - 7/10

 Wow... that train wreck came faster than I thought. I think they copied the story line from Enter The Dragon or Dragon. I think Maggie Q (which was a surprise) saved this movie a bit. Man I'm a sucker for her. :dopey:

I liked it.....
I recommend Revolver and Man Machine as well 👍
I just IMDB'd it, and this is what I saw:
IMDB
Director:Guy Ritchie

Writers:Luc Besson (adaptation)
Guy Ritchie (written by)
That's all I needed to know.
I take it you've seen Dobermann?
Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci, and I've never even heard of this movie. Cassel, I've been a fan of since the Brotherhood of the Wolf.

U.S. Market has a tendency to ignore just about 99% of the foreign made movies. Grrrr.

If you're walking around the video store wondering what to get and nothing tickles your fancy, be sure to look for this one:

Following (1998) -- Before Memento, Christopher Nolan directed (and wrote) Following. It's a strictly indie movie and in black and white... it also lasts about 70 minutes, so you're not likely to fall asleep due to the lack of Hollywood-like SFX. The movie is a bit bland in the beginning... I though to myself that Nolan sucked before Memento, but the second half of the movie really gets interesting in the style of Nolan where everything seems to fall into place at once. Despite the slow start, the writing is strong and makes for a satisfying story that ends on a strong note. 8/10

I agree. I quite enjoyed it.

;)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956) -- Although I'm an older movie buff, I sometimes get pretty bored with the long scenes, endless verborrhea and lack of action. This one is quite the exception. Despite being a sci-fi, they didn't dwindle with crappy laser effects and people in shiny jumpsuits; instead they work very well on the psychological factor of it all. The scenes are easy to follow and despite a few ultra-high-pitched screams from women-objects (as they were still in this flick), the movie itself is very good. 8/10

EDIT:

Perfect Creature (2006) -- Kiwi/British movie where vampires are seen as a religious brotherhood that rules the nation... and they all live in harmony. I'll give you the topic is original (despite being a bit tired of the whole vampire theme) and the acting is alright. But the movie is downright stupid. 4/10

Atonement (2007) -- Great movie. It left me speechless and thoughtful for a long time after watching it. At times the dialogues are a bit fast paced and Keira Knightley talks faster than Lucy Liu on speed. Speaking of which, Keira Knightley does indeed look like an 8-year-old boy... that's maybe the only reason why I couldn't understand why the male lead is in love with her. Oh, and the fact that she's anorexic (I could count all of her ribs). 9/10

I am Legend - 9/10

I'm not a Will Smith fan that much, I thought it was Will Smith playing Will Smith not Legend. I had thoughts during the movie that included oh, Waterworld, oh, iRobot, oh, Shaun of the Dead. I thought it was slow at times but, some how even though parts seemed unrealistic I thought it was actually a pretty decent movie.

And pretty decent is 9/10 ?

There will be blood
Great acting, crap storyline. All abit predictable and the sort of story you've heard a million times before. Though again, the acting was good.

6/10

Spring Break is the season to catch up on movies:

Eastern Promises (2007) -- Very good movie. Viggo Mortensen plays a Russian very convincingly... as does Vincent Cassel. The whole Russian mafia theme is very original although borderline with the Godfather at times. 8/10

I figured out Mortensen was a cop in the first 15 minutes... still, was nice to see the rest of the movie

Juno (2007) -- Despite Hollywood's blatant attempt to have the independent look and the acoustic music to stress that 'indie' feel, I have to say the movie's really very good. The dialogues are 'real' and just what you'd expect. None of that Holywood cheesiness you see whenever someone's preggers but actual pain and all the F-words that come with it. 8.5/10

Michael Clayton (2007) -- Although I think Clooney is a good guy, I sometimes can't get past his "Oh, I'm George Clooney" look. Fortunately, he doesn't do that in this movie. With that said, MC is probably the best of the bunch I saw today, then again I'm a sucker for these legal pursuit types of movies (Pelican Brief, The Firm, etc.). Superb acting, and the 'adjusted' truth does work itself out. 10/10

I finally saw Transformers... I would rate it 8.9/10. The plotline was neat as well as the robots, and the hero was somebody that I felt a typical audience could relate with. However, sometimes the speech of the Autobots bothered me (WHY did Optimus Prime say, "my bad"? But it was mostly fluency), and some of the comedy bits were out of place. Some of the casting was also weak (I don't mean to be racist, but the actor playing, 'Glenn' was a bit of a waste) Overall, though, I felt that it was an excellent movie well worth my time.
