Should having a Facebook account be a priority if you have the means to access it?

I've heard about that. Do you use something like Weibo instead? Just curious. I've met people describing it as China's Facebook, they said it's like the most popular site there.

I use WeChat as well.

I don't have a Weibo but almost everyone I know does. I guess its a mix of Twitter and facebook and is the main social site in China.

Facebook is 10 years old? I didn't know that it was created so long ago. I thought it was about 5 years old.

Facebook was useful if you used groups or needed to communicate with acquaintances. Then it became too familiar and they started with the data harvesting/advertising.

I've always used mine for nonsense. Sort of like how you'd use twitter, except with unlimited characters for greater nonsense output.

I don't think it's necessary, but it sure makes things easier at least for me.

I use it to coordinate events, share pictures with family and friends, and announce things like a new job. I also have my newsfeed tuned to just show updates from various automotive blogs, sports teams, and other things that interest me, there are very few people I actually care to read anything about. I also do play a few games on there too, but I've block them from informing my friends I just did something spectacular.

As far as I know it's only been popular for those 5 years. Nevertheless I didn't know it was that old either to be honest.

I also have never been on Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, or any of those social network sites. Never will. Its just not for me at all.

On a side note, I thought the movie about Facebook "The Social Network" , was a great movie. Regardless, that stuff just isn't for me. You gotta give credit to Mark Zuckerberg, he is very smart and financially set for life.

Nowadays it is slightly strange to come across somebody who doesn't have one.
I use mine to check the latest news around the world based on my friends and interests that I have. I don't tell everybody what I'm doing every minute of my life. But I do keep in touch with a lot of people on there, for me now, it's up there with daylight, running water and Sky TV for everyday neccesities. If it wasn't for facebook I wouldn't be in touch with half as many people as I am now.

However, I do not use Twitter at all. All it is is messages that you can't reply to and just full of annoying # everywhere that it's now hard to read and understand. Hate it!

I read a few years back that Facebook is actually a CIA thing.

Drama if an EMP pulse from the sun, a very powerful solar wind, knocks out all electronics. All people addicted to Facebook are going crazy without being able to check facebook. :P

Well, Harald did said he made it :D

"I don't feel the need to tell everyone what I'm doing every ten seconds",
Exactly what I said....... Then I made a Twitter.. But my goal was to get Audi to follow me, and now I'm off to send a poster to Allan McNish to sign it off, along with TK, Frank Biela, Pirro, Gene, and whole bunch others I have lined up. It's not crucial at all, it's just helpful for not being left out in the after hours..

Never bothered with MySpace, Friendster or any of the rest of that.

I joined Facebook specifically because my colleagues were on there, and it is very convenient having a social group / network / chat area / sharing service / messaging service and coordinating message board all in one place without having to pay for it.

Can't complain. It got me the mag gig and a few contacts for articles. And some friends I haven't seen in decades are on, too... friends I never could have found otherwise... them being in the US or Australia or Europe and us graduating high school before GSM-equipped cellphones or even permanent landlines came to my town.

I think the rumors of Facebook's demise are a bit premature... some people are giving it a few years... I think it'll last another decade or so, despite the exodus of teenagers mortified by their grandparents looking at their beach party pics.

RE: privacy? We're talking about privacy on a public internet forum?

This facespace thing is just a fad and is slowly dieing.

If by dying you mean being replaced with my dynamic and specialized social networks, then yes. There is a reason Facebook exploded, and it isn't because they magically made everyone want their service - people already wanted a facebook (student directories, facebooks for houses, the phonebook) and it just rolled it all together and made it easy to use.

Nothing's wrong with not having one. I don't even use mine anymore. Most of the kids in my grade have moved to Twitter and Instagram. After using Facebook throughout middle school, I realized how much time it consumes and how much drama was started over it. I'd say it's best to stay away from that type of stuff.

The Belgian "taxman" is contacting people (defaulters?) through Facebook to say that they have to pay their taxes.

Belgium and taxes = hell on earth. :D

I still have my Facebook account, I use rarely now a days. I used it a lot when it first got popular - today, I use it about once a week or so. Requirement? - I don't think so, instead should be a choice.

Today I just use it as my online photo album, and to communicate with a friend that lives in Gambia.

Created my account about 8 or 9 years ago, used it for less than a year or so until I started to get loads of invites from friends of friends of friends of friends....

NOOOO!!!
SOD OFF!!!
I don't know you so why would I add you.

Haven't used it since.
Though the account is sometimes handy when registering for other USEFUL internet offers/sites.

I got kicked off mine.

I had it linked to my college email address and after I graduated the school deleted my email address without telling me, so I wasn't able to use Facebook. After a year or so of inactivity, they booted me.

Too lazy to create a new one. It was probably for the better, I was watching my friends become way to attached to it.

Used to have one made it in 2009 I think, but decided to deactivate my personal account a couple of years ago (after some hassle), I do have a "dummy" account without my personal info on it, so I can view videos on there (I am aware that if someone tried hard enough they could still link it to me).

Apparently I joined Facebook on 30th July 2007, though I don't remember why.

Reasons why I have it:
I find it passively useful for information, since most of the companies/websites I visit all post their news to Facebook, it means I only have to visit one site to catch-up on things, rather than lots.
I also tended to use it for managing my photos - I have about 50 albums of Events and stuff I've been to, so maybe a couple of thousand photo's - however, once I get round to it, I'm going to re-upload them all to Flickr.
I've made a few friends, as in people I want to be friends with, via Facebook... that I would not have met without Facebook.
It's useful for seeing what's going on (local venues etc.)
Remembering peoples birthdays.

.. and for all the stuff you don't want, there's normally the option to 'Ignore' it. I see no real reason to actively avoid having a FB account.

A Belgian guy contacted Audi, Mercedes and I believe BMW. His proposal was to get a car for free and drive a certain amount of km for every "like" he got on facebook. Mercedes reacted and he got a Mercedes CLA for free. There were times that he had to leave this car behind and hitch a ride home or call a friend because he didn't get enough likes to drive home.

By now, I believe, he drove around 30,000km with his free Mercedes CLA. It seems that facebook is good for something.

Kudos for this guy.

There's no problem with not having a Facebook account. Personally, I don't have one myself and would rather use Skype to contact my friends, although over Skype there's only one person that I talk to regularly. :P

I still don't know what made me make a FB account many years ago. I have closed it since and have never looked back. Looks like im not the only one who doesn't use FB:bowdown:
