I use the cockpit view for fun, but tend to find it fairly obstructive in most cars. I prefer the roof-cam... gives you a very good sense of where your car is and what it's doing.

For some reason, I get a much better sense of speed, weight transfer, and inertia when using the cockpit view, so I use it a lot. However, some cars do have cockpit views that are less than comfortable to use. If that's the case, I'd switch to roof view.

This is really scary. I was just about the do a similar poll. :D Here is my idea of it:

Here is my choice and reason.

Bumper cam: This is the cam I always fall back to. I was only able to get the GTone challenge done using this cam. So I owe this cam a lot.

Cockpit cam: Initially I did not like this cam because it makes the world outside smaller. So everything looks smaller and with less detail. On the other hand I must complement PD on the way they implemented it. You have the feeling of sitting in the driver’s seat. Still I thing this view is not suitable for long periods of racing, because it strains the eyes.

Roof cam: Initially this view was introduced with GT4. I always thought PD was trying to do a bonnet cam. But apparently not, as with some cars this view is just plain awful. Especially the Le Mans cars are great with this view.
Good point about the view is that you see the upcoming road very good.
Bad thing is that when you have car that has weaker springs, you end up getting sea sick during cornering.

Chase cam: Love-hate relation with this. Love to look a the $exy cars. Hate it because of the lack of control when during serious racing. Anyone managed to get the GTone challenge right with this view? ;)

So I revert to the bumper cam most of the time.

While using the cockpit cam I noticed that the Nissan Skyline pace car has a transparent banner that show the Gran Turismo text and logo in mirrored. It's a shame other cars do not have that, while you can see such banner from the outside view.

Well said sir... I second it.

i use the bumper cam, the cockpit is nice, but the corolla or the impreza, just dont feel the same as it does in real life in teh cockpit, screws me up

Roof cam, because it is much interesting to hear the exhaust note while I can still control the car. Cockpit feels nice too but the psp screen is too small already.

yeah its nice to hear the engine noise in roof cam *especially when driving the ford gt...UNST* but it feels too slow for me

That's a good one. Don't know why, but i just can't play GT (or any racing games) with 3rd person, roof or whatever view that is not cockpit view or bumper. Honestly, i get totally lost with the car's road positioning. MAYBE it's because the fact that i race cars in real life (as a hobby, not a job)?? And GTPSP is the first racing game since... NFS2(?) that i don't play with a steering wheel. But i still remember going to my friend's place to play GT2 with the controller and tapping the hell out of the D-Pad to make perfect cornering. Muscle memory, baby! Now for me is D-Pad and bumper cam all the way.

In GT3, and all racing games I played before that, I used the behind the car. At first, in GT4, I used that view again, but after a while, it started to fell cumbersome, like I was driving a giant block, not a car. After that, I started using the 'bumper cam', in GT4 and every game since.
IMO, it gives a better sense of speed and what the car is doing.

I try to use cockpit view as much as possible, but sometimes its like trying to drive using a periscope. I use bumper cam if I can't see enough using the cockpit.

Its much easier in the cockpit when your playing the game full screen on a PC

Bumper cam 99% of the time. But I occasionally use cockpit view (for laughs) and chase cam (to hear engine sounds better).
