I've heard so much about Joe Satriani so i decided to check out his music. I agree that he an amazing guitar player, but I don't think I could listen to him on a regular basis. I need vocals. Every song on my computer has vocals. I don't think I could live on only instrumentals. I'll add these songs to my library, but I don't think I will become a HUGE Satriani fan... I like him better than Hendrix, though. He's an awsome guitarist, but I don't really like his style.

Here is a list of the Greatest guitar players of all time (put together by "Guitar magazine"):

...
40. Roger McGuinn
41. Kurt Cobain
42. Clarence White
...
This is a joke, right? :scared:

My dog plays the guitar better than Kurt Cobain did... And I don't have a dog!

By the way, how come that Slash has 3 solos in the top 100 of the greatest solos of all time (9, 16, 76), and he is not in the Greatest guitar players of all time...?

Edit: I got it. It's because the lists are not made by the same magazine. (right?)

Yeah, that shocked me too. Go figure....

But that list reminded me of Angus Young, one of my favorite guitar players also.

Favorite guitarist = Phil from SJR he is a guitar shredding god, no one comes near him his music is filled with powerfull emotions i love it. I refuse to listen to anything else

Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman from Slayer. You shoul dhear the ending solos on the song Raining Blood.
I also like the intro they made for Serenity in Murder starts loud and all, and gets sort of "softer" when Tom starts singing.

You want to hear some great guitar?
how about some "unknown" flavors?
I'm not knocking anyones' choices BTW, just adding to the pot.
Monte Montgomery-He is the acoustic SRV.
Doyle Dykes-This guys is just unbelieveable with an acoustic.
John Prine-great storyteller and good guitarist.
Travis Tritt-yes he's country, but damn can the boy play.
Lee Roy Parnell-one of the best slide players I've ever heard.
Duane Allman--He's the guy playing the intro to "Layla" 'nuff said. Died way too young.

I noticed Jeff Beck is very high on that list. Very unique guitarist. One of my favourites.

However I take lists with a large pinch of salt! Everyone is going to have a different opinion, though it is interesting to see who's in and who's not. For example, no mention of Jeff Healey. I'm not sure if he's still playing but certainly a uniquely gifted quitarist. Check out the cover of ZZ Top's "Blue Jean Blues" from his album "See The Light".

Apart from that most that I like are there.

gtavcfan -- I didn't say Kerry King is the best guitarist in the world, but he is a very good guitarist. I'm starting to think Jeff may be just as good, though, if not even better.

I've never really been exposed to alot of pure instrumental work and most of my favourite guitarists are people from famous bands. I'd be glad to listen to any recommendations if you guys could tell me about them! ;) (Well the list has been growing since I entered this thread, that's pretty obvious! :D)

My favourites, in no particular order :

Kirk Hammett (Metallica) :The Four Horsemen, Ride the Lightning (song), Master of Puppets (song) and more.

Adam Jones (Tool) : Ticks & Leeches, their cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter.

Joe Satriani : Is There Love In Space? (song), The Souls of Distortion, Searching, Mind Storm, Secret Prayer. I have two of his albums and they're excellent albums, he puts so much effort and 'soul' (:D) into his work and you could really feel every string he picks... it's just beautiful. 👍

Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) : Time, Comfortably Numb. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part I - IX). Excellent.

Slash (Guns N' Roses) : November Rain, Sweet Child O' Mine.

John Petrucci (Dream Theater) : Another crazy guitarist. I can't really pick a favourite, most of the solos on Train of Thought are mindblowing!

Tom Morello (RATM/Audioslave) : Ashes In Fall, Shadow on The Sun (demo version), Like A Stone. Never really heard much of his solos though, but he's still one of my favourites.

That's it I guess. I've recently started listening/watching some Steve Vai and Ygwnie Malmsteem (sp?), managed to get their G3 Live In Denver DVD thingy and I must say both of them play with lightning speeds and precision!. 👍

He doesn't qulalify as my absolute favorite, but anyone who likes SRV-style music should check out Chris Duarte. I have a couple of his CD's and would recommend My Way Down and C-Butt Rock off of the Texas Sugar/Strat Magic CD. Good stuff.👍

If I listed my personal favorite guitarists, I would just be saying the same as everyone else. :)

A favourite album I like to listen to for great sounding guitars is Blue Oyster Cults "Imaginos". No idea what it's about though....no idea who plays on it either..though I remember reading in the credits that Satriani played on it. Always play it nice'n'loud! :mischievous:

Yeah, that's a great one. I actually love the whole Jar of Flies EP.

Jimmy Enslashay

Jeff and King are both just as cool. Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman (from Slayer), Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars (from Motley Crue) are the best guitarist in the world (thats my opinion, since Slayer and M. Crue are my fav. bands ever)

Of course you can't beat Nigel Tufnell of Spinal Tap.....particularly his unique form of "violining".... ;)

joe satriani, steve vai, buckethead are the best/fastest iv heard, others not so amazing but still good, josh homme, dave grohl, eric sardinas (sp?)

My fav ever guitarist would have to be Slash. I want hair like his :D

Slash: Anything live, especially Double Talkin' Jive

Dave Gilmore: Comfortably Numb, also the live versions of Sorrow and Another Brick in the wall are great.

already have the hat, the bottle of Jack Daniels, and the Les Paul copy!!! All I need is the hair, or a wig!!!

I don't think a wig is gonna cut it. :)

SRV All the way. I have not yet heard a song by him that I haven't liked. By far, my favorite guitarist (and band).

And in no particular order...
Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Pete Townsend
Neil Young
Angus Young

I can't think of many more worth mentioning right now.
