Why do people like loud music while driving?

I sometimes wear headphones while driving. It gets very touch and go sometimes though...
That's illegal in the US and quite likely other parts of the planet.
I turn the volume to 11 and RIP THE KNOB OFF!
My receiver goes to 78. A stupid number, sure, but 11/78 is pretty damn quiet. Just sayin'...
That's why I'm always armed. Personally, I could give two craps if you or anyone else dislikes my music. I'll play it as loud as I please.

In fact, if I am playing it that loud, it's because I WANT you to hear it.
Maybe it's because I'm a parent but I go out of my way to keep my kids from hearing and seeing things I don't want them to yet and then some asshat rolls up in his vehicle with 2Diddy or Kimye or whoever the hell is popular now with F this and F that. I have no respect whatsoever for that. And yes, the same applies to your Primal Sabbath, but for different reasons.

Short version - if I wanted to hear the song your listening to, I'd already have it playing.

I play music loud when I'm driving with the windows down, mainly so I can hear it over the roar of the wind/road. Most of the other time I don't really crank it because I don't want to be driving around with a headache.

There's a time and place for it, it doesn't need to be done 24/7 👍

Music's way too loud in my car. I need it to drown out the annoying & scary noises typically heard in used cars. j/k

I really do have music on too loud, because while I listen to everything(classical to rock to country & everything else), I do often like them loud. As couple of people noted in here, I do turn them way down around people in parking lots, near homes(especially early in the morning or night), stop lights, etc.

Antagonises people with loud music
Carries gun to shoot them if they don't like it.

Not sure if Scumbag Steve meme, or Badass.jpg...

Yes, because I totally said I would shoot someone if they didn't like what I am listening too. Carrying a gun is totally unrelated and I do it for personal protection and target practice.

Agreed, with the addition of turning in down in my neighborhood, also. I don't need my neighbors thinking I'm an obnoxious tool.
But alas, everyone on the internet thinks that. :P

People like music. You can't blame 'em.

I know why. It's so they can go deaf and have an excuse to blow their hot hatch's engine sky-high and have an excuse to trade up to a proper car.

*every hot hatch owner reading this comment stares at me like they're going to have my head on a pike*

One can dream, right?

I don't want anyone to miss the opportunity to hear some freaking awesome music. I'm the guy yelling out the window at the driver next to me, "DO YOU HEAR THIS S***!? FREAKING ROCK AND ROLL! WOO!"

What's with all these lame excuses for liking loud music in their cars, and the reasons to not like it when you hear it in someone elses? You're out on the road, in a car, and chances are great that you won't be near the thing that's annoying you for very long so get over it.

People need to fess up and admit their real reasons for liking to play their music loud in their cars. It's their cars! It's their own personal space where they feel free enough to do that and they're going to put on whatever the hell they want because of these things, not to spite the rest of the world. I've done it, and I'll do it again as soon as I get my stereo sorted out and get my amps and subs transferred into my truck. You betcha I will. Will some people find it annoying? Of course, but they can just drive away, or I will, so it doesn't matter.

Now then, having said all that, there is a little something that bothers me about excessively loud music in cars. It's when a high power system is installed poorly and the bass rattles everything around it but it sounds like crap inside. That's just kids that have no clue how to do it. All of my rides that had a system installed were very quiet from the outside, and I could sustain 128-130 dB of pressure. Each 2 dB rise above that is expensive, needing to double wattage and so on, so it's really expensive to get even up to 140 dB.

My car radio is linked to my driving speed. Only annoying thing about that is when I'm standing still and there's a good song on the radio, I turn up the volume.
When I start moving again, the volume climbs to uncomfortable levels rather quickly.

I don't know what to say about this really.. When I listen to music loudly in my car I have the windows up. It gets extremely loud when hearing from the outside so I keep it down. As for the bass, it's tight, and doesn't rattle anything.

I can have my music up loud, but it depends upon what I'm listening to. If it's something heavy (like rock or metal) or fast paced (like trance), then I will have it up loud, it's the only way to listen to it. Otherwise, it will be at a relatively modest volume.

Doesn't it also depend on if you're alone in the car or not? I've cranked up the volume from time to time with my wife with me, and believe me, she likes to blast the home stereo when I'm at work. But I don't keep the volume up high with her along, maybe just for certain guitar riffs or other nice bits that sound good loud.

True, there's very little parity between what I like and what my other half likes, so it tends to get turned up if I'm on my own. What I have done is moved the balance and fade towards my corner of the car, so it's about 40% FR, 20% all others, so it doesn't interfere with other people when they want to talk. They don't have to talk loudly to hear each other, and I can have my music relatively high without upsetting others.

Usually I have the music loud on my ride home, helps to keep me energized and awake after working all night. Most of the time though, its fairly quiet as I prefer the sound of my engine/exhaust when I'm driving through the city.

I listen to loud music while driving, but at an intersection I'll turn it down because I actually have this thing called respect for others. Crazy!

When I am in my dorm I put headphones on and listen to loud music. When I go to school (as a brass player) I play and listen to loud music. So it's only natural that when I drive I also like to listen to loud music.

I listen to loud music in the car because it's fun and I love it. It's part of the freedom of having my own car and being able to do whatever I want with/in it. I love driving it and I love listening to music while driving it. With windows down? With windows down. BUT, I always turn down the slower I go, so it's pretty tame at a stoplight (especially if I pull up and I notice other cars have their windows down). I like having the windows down and feeling the breeze, and I like listening to loud music. It's not an attention thing.

Also, it depends on what I'm listening to. If I'm listening to classical or the Alan Parsons Project it's usually at a reasonable volume. An introspective song like "Old and Wise" (or even better, Barber's Adagio for Strings) would be stupid to crank. Whatever it is though, it's always loud enough to garner your complete attention if you're in the car though - as a musician myself, I treat music as an event and not something played in the background. I typically crank it though, mostly because much of the music I have in my car (still use CDs) needs to be played loud, Eurobeat and trance being the principal offenders (but also because it's fun).

Loud music in general doesn't bother me too much. What does bother me is when the bass is turned to 11, which makes the whole house shake like an earthquake just struck.

I don't usually turn it up much because I don't want my speakers to start rattling. I'd be surprised if anyone has ever been able to hear my music over the car.

I also listen to my music loud, not too loud that it will block other sounds (like emergency vehicles) or hurt my ears. Most of the time I will roll down the window a bit on intersections just to see other people's reaction (especially when I listen to metal in other languages [like Latvian]).

Yes, I do find it annoying when other's do the same, especially with music that I really hate -I'm always thinking to myself "why can't they turn that crap down or off".

In fact, if I am playing it that loud, it's because I WANT you to hear it.

I've never understood how someone can be so disrespectful for no reason. I do enjoy pulling up to stoplights when someone like you is blaring their music because they "want" me to hear it. I try to blow as little smoke as possible in my truck but when someone is blaring their music at a light, especially when I have my son with me, and their window is right next to my exhaust, well let's just say my truck can blow quite a bit of black smoke if I want it to. It makes me look and feel like a douchebag but they get the picture real quick and either close their windows or turn their crap down and I generally get waves and thumbs up from the other motorists who were sick of the loud music too.

In my Honda, I drive around with loud music playing, so I can hear it over my exhaust.
In my work van I drive with the music loud, so I dont go crazy from the rattling of my tools, shelves and what ever is sliding around in the back.

Rude? Maybe, but what about the people blasting Gospel music? Cause its religious its ok?
The argument can go on forever.
As I've read in a few posts, it seems people are trying to defend that they dont want to listen to music they dont like, but will play music they do like loud.
What gives you the right to say a type of music is bad/crap, just cause you dont like it?

Ride with me you'll be listening to Rock one light, Rap the next light, then some chick song the next light.(only with a woman in the car, but who hasn't been caught listening to an embarrassing song at a light and jammin away?)

Anyways, if you dont like what I'm listening to cause of its content or volume, roll your windows up or turn yours up or just make sure your not near me at the next light. And if it bothers you that much and you think I'm breaking a sound ordinance, call the cops and give them my tag number. Cause if you say anything to me I will turn it up more and hold my revs a little higher just to bug you some more.

Disturbing the Peace, One Red Light at a Time :D

Anyways, if you dont like what I'm listening to cause of its content or volume, turn yours up.
I do that sometimes, a little sound battle. Usually good for a few laughs at the lights.

Around here it's used as a status symbol or ego inflation tool among the lower class. Like when I go to work - every night the ghetto thug wannabes sit in their cars before work with the stereos cranked as loud as possible, all trying to look as hardcore as possible. So when I walk to the warehouse from the employee parking lot, I literally walk by dozens of trunk-lid vibrating junkers, stereos blasting as loud as possible. It's really quite ridiculous. Actually, come to think of it, that pretty much describes the entire city of Aurora, Colorado.

I usually don't have my music loud as I usually listen to blues and it doesn't sound very good when cranked up.

That being said, if I'm ever in @TB's neighborhood I'll make sure to crank up N.W.A. with my windows down.:P

^^^They like to do that here, especially at the drag strip. Pretty much anything goes, you can get as loud as you want.

It's even funnier when you roll by with metal blasting stupidly loud and it's overpower their ghetto garbage. Someone told me people get scared of you

Quite honestly though, I don't really care if you like what I'm listening to or not. I want you to hear it. :dopey:
