Why doesn`t PD get the credit they deserve from Sony?

I always asked this myself.

The Gran Turismo franchise is the by far best selling playstation franchise out there. Just few stats:

Gran Turismo 5 (7.43 million) (Best Selling PS3 game)
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (5.34 million) (2nd best selling PS3 game)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (14.89 million) (2nd best selling PS2 game, IIRC the PS2 sales went up alot when this game released, like a second launch)
Gran Turismo 4 (11.44 million) (3rd best selling PS2 game)
Gran Turismo (10.85 million shipped) (Best selling PS1 game)
Gran Turismo 2 (9.37 million shipped) (3rd best selling PS1 game)

Each game has been a huge success, but why is it that Sony doesn`t advertise GT as much as games like Uncharted or God of War or doesn`t supports PD the way they deserve, with more ressources so they can keep up with T10 which have way more people working on the Forza games. Also, I can`t stand how much praise they give to Quantic Dream whichs only little success was Heavy Rain (A story driven game full of plotholes), while PD doesn`t even get mentioned at the E3.

This really bugs me and after GT5, which was released unfinished, I fear that PD will loose many customers if Sony doesn`t invest alot into the marketing and development of GT6.

What exactly do you want them to do? They pushed GT5 big style when it was released, it's now 18 months later, with nothing new from PD to show at E3 what do you expect? "Oh by the way PD are still working on GT games. Moving on...."

They put out one game in the same time it takes the competition to put out three - all of which will probably have better Metacritic scores that GT5.

They should be happy they're still employed.

In my opinion, some of the "non" advertising has to do with, "if a game's doing good, why spend money on advertising" mentality. The GT series is doing good therefore doesn't need much advertising. I remember when GT5 first released, they had commercials all the time for it but soon died down. Its old now, its not worth it for companies to spend advertising money on old products.

All in all, its not about "not getting the credit they deserve", its more of putting money where it needs to be. May I add, games don't need to be advertised after a few months after release, that's where "word-of-mouth" comes in.

PD gets all the credit it desserves and more! They are Sony's franchice studio for their genere. They have Sony's full support and resources at their disposal for all the GT franchize. What else do you want? For Sony to be renamed PD??

This x10. I honestly don't know why Sony doesn't just fire Kaz and start a new studio with the remaining employees from PD plus some new recruits. It sounds harsh, I know, but when you go through letdown after letdown, it's time for something to change.

"[Sony] doesn`t support PD the way they deserve"

Goodness me

Sony have done nothing but support Polyphony Digital. Sony gave PD plenty of time to craft GT5, together with a nice budget. They sanctioned an expansion, and seemingly a hiring drive. PD are also likely to be the first studio anywhere in the world to get their hands on PS4 tech.

If you're basing your reasoning on marketing, firstly, Sony are 🤬 awful at marketing, and second, other titles probably need much more promotion than GT.

You also have to remember that while significantly increasing the headcount to that of Turn 10 levels would be nice for gamers, it decreases the margin for Sony, as the cost of making the game dramatically increases.

To answer the OP's question,

The vast majority of the gaming population both casual and hardcore don't care much for racing games. Sure its hard to believe on a site like this but those sales figures are not at the levels things like FPS' generate. Black Ops had 25 million sales from one game! and they come out every year! Sony will put all its effort into promoting action genres like that.

Its my personal experience but most of the guys I know in the real world don't ever play racing games, one tried GT4 once thought it was too hard and boring and never touched it again, that's the usual response GT gets from most gamers I know.

I do agree however that Sony should put more staff into PD, they take forever to dev a GT because they only have like 100 workers which is ridiculous.

Nice mature response 👍 Thanks for the input. 👍

These two comments are just insane ways of thinking.

No. Who'd replace him? Gran turismo would soon spiral into being a bad game which has 3 releases a year as ea do. Kaz knows what he's doing, let him be after all gt5 was worth the wait.

(admittedly I only got hyped up about it as I saw an article in a newspaper and it flooded my brain with memories of gt3 which I played as a 6-7 year old. I remember always going for the Subaru in arcade mode (wr blue)and doing a time trial badly. But after the article I went out and bought prologue and was anticipating the game even more.

Put this way, don't fire kaz, hire more programmers and modellers. Simpler solution.

P.s Sony give pd all the recognition it needs. It gave them £80million and 2 more years to make gt5. If that were Microsoft they would cut turn10 off. In terms of marketing

Gtacademy is also a pretty dam good advert.

So, I think this sums up how "poorly" gran turismo is advertised.

Oh and don't think it's just racing cars. (I saw one of these today ;))

I was thinking about this yesterday, and THEE answer I came up with was...

Fair point.

I'm impressed too! I mean a racing game in the top 5. I was just saying. :)

Exactly! 👍 I don't know how the hiring process goes, but if Sony is responsible for the hiring of the staff they defiantly need to help the PD team by hiring more people. Still GT5 is my favorite game right now, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Well, they could've had that blue PS3 bundle here. Could've had the Signature Edition here. They could pony up the cash for product placement and advertising.

Well, i think 1 of the reasons their not advertising is because-
1. The game is 1 1/2 years old.
2. They spent $80 million developing the game(although according to my calculations the've generated AT LEAST $300 million, including expenses)(wait for meme)
Although #2 should cancel itself out. Spend money=selling...
