That's why many people choose the PS2 over others, and I think that would be the case with PS3 also.
No, the people who bought the PS2 didn't buy it for it's graphics. If they would buy a console with the best graphics, they'd choose the Xbox. They chose the PS2 because of size, backward compatibility, games, and because it's a Sony.

And its free DVD player(Xbox needs a $30 remote) in many cases as I've never owned a DVD player other than my PS2. PS2's graphics are ok now but its limits kicked in 2 years ago just like Xbox.

The Xbox survived longer. The HDD and online made all the difference. Example, downloadable content for Star Wars Battlefront II. For the PC, they got a patch and mod tools. For the Xbox, they got 4 extra maps, and 2 all new characters. What did the PS2 get? Nothing. At all. This is the case for many other games, the PC and the Xbox get the extras, while the PS2 people get nothing. And if you're thinking downloadable content isn't much, it helped me give the old games a few more months of life, and online gaming did the same thing. They breathed life into old games.

So why were there like 5 xbox games at E306 and 100 for PS2? I'm exagerrating but you get the idea. I dont know what you mean though as far as "lasted longer". Xbox is the first console in history to get a price increase. $149 to $179 and came with a $20 game. What was the $10 premium?

"Lasted longer", as in it had more capabilities, and it didn't become limited as the PS2 until long after. So, it was easier to add-on to, whatever, you get the idea. But it was killed of earlier.

And the Xbox got a price increase because it wasn't selling as many consoles as Sony's PS2.

Also, there was about 5 360 games, and 15 PS3 games. The 360 had less, since it was already for sale.

I'm buying a Wii way before I buy a 360 or a PS3, it looks great! :D

But Xbox is way too big to even think about bring it to a retreat or sleepover, for example. And it had the fastest processor, yes - but not much of a difference. It came after PS2 and got replaced before PS2. So PS2 lasted "longer", didn't it?

I might ending up buying a Wii now. Only if they wouldn't have so much child-ish games :indiff:

Haven't you realized by now that the Wii is going to be flooded with zillions of first-person-shooters simply because of the way its controller works?

Think about it -- even mediocre, low-budget shooters on the Wii will still be more intuitive and fun than the best that the PS3 and 360 will have to offer.

When I was playing Killzone on PS2, I was thinking of a light-gun type controller, like on Wii, that lets you aim physically. Knowing Nintendo, they probably won't come out with a gun controller, but that would please me even more. :D

I'm actually pretty excited by the Wii. it may not be the best next-gen system released but for the price I'll definately pick it up and have some fun with it. Whenever I get bored of Xbox or PS2, i always play my N64 just for the pure childish fun of it. The realistic graphics are great and all, but sometimes you just want a fun game to play.

Heck, Nintendo had a 500X better graphics than Sony on N64 compared to PS1, now they lag behind both Sony and Microsoft. Just plain weird.

I think I'll buck a few trends here.

I don't think ultimate graphics matter so much to the average gamer as much as gameplay. When Final Fantasy finally got some characters moving that didn't look like legos, people were hooked who'd never wanted to play an RPG before. There's a certain level of realism that people want, but frankly, since the days of the Dreamcast, we've had them. I don't think anyone except a few pure graphics whores will complain about the shot of Link in the previous page, and I'm positive that in motion, he'll look a hundred times better.

Look at Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube. Those graphics were frighteningly real. Now it's funny to think of the Wii as underpowered, since it'll be the most advanced Nintendo console yet, but the graphics potential of the Wii will approach those of the 360 in no time. No, not as many polys on screen, not quite as high a resolution, not quite as many interactive objects on screen, but really, who will care? Not most people. They will simply want graphics as good or better than the PS2 delivered, and they'll get those in spades.

The only thing that will matter are fun games, and Nintendo does know how to make fun games, as do its partners. They'll get it together and do just fine.

As for Duck's question, give me a PS3 Elite please. I'll get the other two consoles later. ;)

That's funny, Final Fantasy 7 is the newest FF that I actually enjoyed playing...and I still prefer 6. 8 never grabbed me, and 9 and beyond just stink.

I certainly agree. As graphics have reached a threshold of goodness, it now comes down to the art direction and the skill in which developers create and “draw” interesting characters and worlds. Higher resolutions and poly counts do not ensure that a game will be good looking, immersive or cohesive from a visual design perspective. Pass the wiimote…

I have to give you a high five on that. I much prefer the Final Fantasy games on the Super Nintendo. FFII (IV in Japan?) is my favorite. Those older games weren't interactive movies with miserable storylines and depressed angsty characters, and the synthetic orchestral soundtracks were fantastic. Especially when you consider that the composer Nobuo Uematsu only had eight notes max to work with! The only thing I liked about VII was the arcade, and Barrett really gagged me out. :P

Unfortunately, a lot of people really like those interactive movies with depressed, angsty characters and miserable storylines. I have to admit that the babes look really cute in those later FF games. Er, movies.

I think Nintendo have been very clever with the Wii, because they have created a package that appeals to all gamers, in that it will be cheap enough to appeal to casual gamers plus the innovations to appeal to any true gamer. As for the graphics, I personally don't care about them. The games I've been playing recently are Wipeout 2097, Micromachines V3 (8 player rules :D) and Live For Speed, none of which have great graphics but are almost entirely based on the gameplay.

I'm really happy about Nintendo's direction because of this, think of all the things we wouldnt have if nintendo didnt exist!

Personally, I'll be getting a Wii and using my PC for my racing fix and online gaming.

I'm still not sure if I'll buy any of the 3 consoles.
Xbox : no way, I'm busy eradicating anything labelled 'Micro$oft' in my house.
PS3 : when GT5 is released, and features realistic damage and is sold bundled with the console for 300 € max.
Wii : if the games look cool, that'll probably the first one I'll buy.

Or else I'll stop playing GT4 and finally open my 35 other games :D

My problem with sony, particularly the ps2 is all the bs filler games. Out of a summer(or two) of solid gaming, before I got my xbox, I rented countless games for the PS2, about 10 percent of them were decent and 5 percent I ran out a bought asap, but the rest were crap cheaply thrown together 3rd party filler games. But those 5 percent of great games were really great, got months and months of play instead of weeks. The xbox and nintendo have less filler games, but they still have them. With the ps2 I would have to research the game before I rented it because there were some horrible games that I wouldnt play for more than 10 min. My fave racing game right now is mario kart double dash on the g-cube, hours of fun. The Wii looks great because you can get the origional mario from the net, and all the games from previous systems, cant wait to start playing mario 64 again. I have a 360 and to be honest the graphics werent what I expected. Ive got a 42" plasma and at 720p or 1080i it still has jagged edges, not very noticable but they are there. I am hoping the ps3 will blow everything out of the water, I was a ps2 fan before the xbox came out, but xbox live and the hdd really changed the way gaming will be handled in the future, thus converting me into an xbox freak, I will still give the ps3 a chance and hope that it is $600 well spent. All in all I will have all three nex gen systems, already have the 360, reserved the Wii(hate the name but whatever) and will buy the ps3 after they fix all the bugs in the first and second edition.

P.S. With all this talk I cant wait to see what videogames will be like in 10years or 20.

Well, with the 360, developers aren't going all-out with it. With the PS3 developers, they're thinking "Oh my God, our dreams can finally come true!" Give it some time, 360 games will probably be looking really awesome soon.

When the PS5 comes out, you probably won't be able to tell the difference between games and real life.

The Dreamcast was too early for the PS2 war

The Saturn Was Digital, which makes it stupid :P

hope this isn't a double post

Dreamcast came a year and a half or so before PS2, thats not too early. X360 showed up a year before PS3 will and thats no where near too early to compete in a console war.

What do you mean Saturn was digital?

I would suggest that Matt is talking about the original Saturn pad. Nonetheless, the Playstation pad was originally digital, and an analogue equipped pad was eventually made available for Saturn.
