More bad news than I had hoped for -- no DVD playback, not even with a dongle, you have to buy Opera, the first online-multiplayer game is some Pokemon thing (does that mean none of the other launch titles are online???), Virtual Console is pricier than I thought it would be -- but the avatar thing and the news, weather, photo editing, and message features came out of nowhere, and make the Wii sound like a somewhat more convincing package.

I'm 95% sure I'll be getting one still, but I have mixed opinions at the moment. If I receive word that NFS Carbon and other launch or near-launch games will have online multiplayer as well, then I'll feel better.

I have to agree with the Nintendo PR person in saying that DVD playback is basically useless. Seriously, who these days that really wants a DVD player doesn't already have one?? I doubt many people were sitting there hoping and praying that the Wii would play DVDs so they would finally have a player. Hell, you can get $25 players these days that I'm sure would be better anyway. Not really an issue in my opinion.
.....you have to buy Opera
Again, who doesn't have the internet already?? And better yet, do you really want to sit on the couch, and have to browse the internet with a resolution of 852x480??? I sure as hell don't. Sure, its a nice extra fluff feature, but again, basically redundant in todays world.

I'll gladly pay $5 to not have to dig my old NES out of the closet, dig around for the games, dig around the back of my TV to get it hooked up, and then spend 10 minutes blowing in the system and cartridge to get it to play. Even $10 for N64 games is fine by me. Its not like I'm going to buy a ton of them. But, some of the classics, you bet. I'm all for this, and the price is fine by me.

Well, it would be pretty useful for playing your game, and when you need help, you can go to the web browser and look up FAQs or post a question on a forum.

I'm not saying there is NO uses for internet access using the console. I'm just saying, given the small size of the display resolution it uses, browsing would be hindered. Let alone the fact that you have no keyboard to input with. I'm sure there are times it would be fine, but not much that I can think of. Again, a nice feature, just not something I'm upset isn't included.

I agree with you on the first two parts -- I was speaking more as someone who wants to see the Wii storm the market, rather than an end-user who wanted to use those features.

I know it isn't exactly fair to expect Nintendo to live up to every last bit of speculation that was surrounding the Wii before today, but if it had been able to provide DVD playback, free internet browsing, and classic games for a few quarters a piece, then Nintendo would have an extremely enticing package on their hands. Instead, as Nintendo seems eager to do these days, the Wii only delivers on most of its promises, and only half-delivers on some.

It's still a great deal. It's just not quite the juggernaut conquer-the-market-and-bring-Sony-to-its-knees kind of deal I was hoping they'd go for. :indiff:

Edit: As for the Virtual Console, the only money to be made there is from older customers who didn't hang on to their old consoles and don't know about emulation, or who have never played the games before. I still have my NES, SNES, Genesis, and N64, I have many of the significant hits for each, and I don't mind pulling them out of the attic now and then. If I don't have a game for one of those systems, I probably have a ROM of it on my computer. The only games I can envision myself buying on the Virtual Console are obscure N64 titles.

Oh trust me, I know all about emulators. I used to be VERY into them. But, the last thing I want to do now is spend more time sitting at my desk, staring at my monitor. If I can crash on the couch, and rock some Contra, I'm all for it. Thats just me though.

Well, just as evbery other console, I'll buy this one, certainly nice to see Nintendo going into another direction than Sony and MS... but you know what ? If you want to make the Wii a 4 player party machince, you need another three remotes and three nunchucks... which would be about 135 $, probably 150$ in europe... thta is quite a bit of money, but I guess it's worth the fun...

Edit : oops, it cpuld be even more... I just read on gamespot that the remote costs 40 USd and the nunchuck 20... which would be.... 180 $ ay...that hurts...

How is the need to buy extra controllers any different from any other console where you don't get 4 controllers packaged with the console itself?

How is the extra $10 per controller (compared to the 360 controller) not understandable due to the fact that the Wii's controllers have infrared sensors, gyroscopic accelerometers, rumble, speakers, and some form of memory storage?

Pretty much what I expected, I think. $250 was bit more than I thought, but it does come with a game. What I didn't expect was the expensive controllers. :scared: I thought for sure Nintendo was going to try to rip people off with the "oldie" games, but looks like they do learn from their mistakes(their NES Classics on GB Advance). Props to them. 👍

I won't get this system at launch, but I'm pretty sure I will be getting one. I mean, it has Dragon Quest on it!

$180 for console that costs $250(with a game), I think is pretty hefty. That's almost 3/4 of the console's price.

You should get one before June if you wanted to browse the internet with it:
IGN.com
Internet Channel
Go here to access the Opera internet browser. In addition to supporting flash (making this a step up from the DS browser), the browser uses the Wiimote to zoom in and out. The browser will normally cost money, but Nintendo will make it available for free download until June of 2006.

The WiiMote and Nunchaku are 3/4 of the whole point of the console, no? ;)

Euro stuff announced.

Euro Wii Price and Date Announced
Nintendo finally gives us Europeans the news we've been waiting for.
by Matt Wales
UK, September 15, 2006 - Speaking at its European Wii press conference today, Nintendo has finally revealed that its forthcoming console will hit shelves across the territory on 8 December, priced at £179 in the UK and 249 Euros in Europe. Games will cost between £34-£39 (49-50 Euros).

For their money, European customers will recieve a spanking new Wii console, one Wiimote and nunchuck attachment, alongside a copy of Nintendo's family-friendly Wii showcase, Wii Sports. The package will also include an AC adaptor, A/V cable, console stand, sensor bar, sensor bar stand and two AA batteries.

Also from launch, punters can pick up extra Wiimote's for the princely sum of £29/€39, nunchuck attachments for £14/€19 and that all-important Virtual Console-aiding Classic Controller, priced at £14/€19.

Previously, Nintendo has announced that the Wii will launch first in the US on November 19 at $249.99 and later in Japan on December 2, retailing for 25,000 yen. Wii Sports will not be included with the Wii bundle in Japan, instead selling seperately for 4800 yen.

4 games are normally 200 bucks. SO MUCH MONEY!

And it's even worse in Europe... we have to pay 180 EUR for 3 complete addidional pads... and 250 for the console.
3 Complete pads for the Xbox360 ( with wire... since the motion sense remote wireless etc doesn't care... I just name what I need for four players ) costs 100 EUR. Which means : A Core 360 is 30 EUR cheaper than the Wii. And a Premium package is just 70 EUR more than the Wii.

Sorry, but that is not really a great deal... I mean let's face it, the Wii is not up to date form the technical standpoint.

I'll still buy it, since I buy every console and not everybody will buy 4 complete pads... still...

After reading up on the Wii just a bit, I think they have a convincing case for getting many people to buy them. With the lack of PS3s that will be on the shelf for the holiday season and Nintendo saying that there will be "more than enough" out there, they stand to gain a bit of market share here. Hell, they may even take some away from Microsoft...

The combination of the $250 price with the inclusion of Wii Sports is a good idea, so one could theoretically expect that just a Wii would have retailed for $200. The question of the extra controlers with the nunchuck certainly is a valid one, but when you are only paying $10 more per pad as compared to that of a 360 Wireless one, it isn't like you are diving into a hole here.

Added to that, Twilight Princess will be there on day one, and that is not only going to drive sales of the game, but of the console as well. Nintendo fanboys have been waiting, what, three years for this day? It is almost a guarantee for success here, as November will shape up to be a very exciting time in the Video Game world.
----------

Will I be buying one? Eventually, yes, but not right when it first comes out. On my list of electronics, the Wii ranks third behind a new Digital Camera and a new 30-32" HDTV. After that, who knows, eh?

But Wii is far ahead on the innovation standpoint. I've said it before: people are buying the Wii for the Wii. The fact is that the Wii can do no more than the other systems compared to what they can do compared to the Wii. Wii will appeal to the emotions of gamers in more ways than the other systems, in my opinion (and that's not to say that ps3 or xbox won't have emotional impact).

I don't want to argue. I just want to have fun. Haha.

Anyway, in other news, I heard the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess got dropped like a hot tamale.

Yea, because swinging my arms around totally taps into my emotions much more than good dialoge and a stunning collection of music :dunce:

Would the Wii have HDDs available?
No internal HDD. But it does have USB ports on it, so it is possible that you might be able to use an external USB HDD for storage. But, the main user storage is by way of SD memory cards. And, with those as cheap as they are, it would seem silly to have 80GB or so just to store NES games and what not.

I don't think Nintendo is planning on having MASSIVE ammounts of data available to download. Lots of games, sure, but those don't take up much space. The biggest ones, N64 titles, are only 64MB max, so that doesn't exactly need a lot of space. I wouldn't worry about needing much storage space with the Wii.

It will be awesome if one of the makers made a console which operates solely on downloaded data - no more discs, bunch of game covers, and missing games discs. All in the HDD - and make it either unreadable by the PC or unremovable HDD so that the games don't get pirated and put up for download.

I'm not trying to speak for him, but what I believe he is trying to say is the Wii will make people feel they are involved more in the game, rather than just watching it happen. By acting out some of the motions, instead of just pushing buttons, you might get the sense of being more deeply involved in the game. Which I can see.

But again, like he said, thats not saying that the PS3 and 360 won't have emotion and very involving titles. When I play Oblivion on my 360, I do feel VERY much a part of that game, because what happens is what I did. I'm not just going through the story, I'm making it. So, yes, there is the definite possibility for very "emotional" games on the other 2 consoles.

But, I agree with him, the Wii will most certainly make you feel a part of the action more. As a golfer, I can't wait for some great golf games. Now, instead of just wiggling an analog stick around, I can actually use my 25 years of experience to my advantage. That will be great

Always a party pooper, eh? If it doesn't have a Playstation badge on the hood, it can't be any good at all, huh?

---

I'm going to agree with most of the "sane" folks here and say that the Wii will certainly be more involving than other titles from the PS3 and 360 collections. Sure, Sony may be able to pass off their motion-sensor crap, but there really haven't been any great innovations with that thus far.

I'm excited by what you will be able to do with the Wii in terms of sports titles, Golf and Tennis especially. It encourages the user to get up an move around, and that would be a great thing for our rather docile nation. Granted, you may look like a "fool" when doing it, but you look just as stupid to someone when you are playing DDR or Guitar Hero, no?

Ohhh wait, I forgot. Those are on the Playstation, so you can't look stupid playing those!

(To let it be known: I'm a huge Guitar Hero fan, and although I'm not the best at it, the important part is that I have fun while doing it!)
