Maybe. Well I sort of did, eventually. Not because I think GT is anywhere near accurate enough to replace test driving a vehicle. I will say it gives you a very general idea on car behavior but the influence was more in a virtual advertisement sorta way for me. Before the WRX and Evo released stateside the GT series made me aware of these cars and I wanted one. Because of the GT series I followed their eventual release and development and in prologue the new STi sorta sealed the deal for me and now Im driving one. Its not an STi(2009 WRX SPT Premium sedan) but I will credit the GT series for my interest in the vehicle.

I think people might be missing the point in this thread. Correct if I'm wrong, but how many people in NA or Europe knew about cars such as Skyline, Supra, and RX7 before GT first came out? GT games do increase a manufacturer's visibility, and if you find a car you love in the game, chances are you'll be willing to at least take a look in real life. This is different than playing GT and then rushing to the car dealership and buying that car, because it will never happen. But if you play GT and you come to absolutely love the Lancer for example, and you happen to be on the market for cars of that segment, won't you consider that car and perhaps give it a slightly higher rating based on your game experience?

I'd definitely use it as a starting point, a way to experience at least how the car looks before checking it out in real life. The GT vs real life 'feel' comparison would be really fun to do. I certainly wouldn't base the decision on GT alone and just buy the car though.

On the longer timeline I think GT's got a big influence over the brands and perhaps cars that we grow fascinated with, but can't afford until later on in life.

I voted "Not Likely" By this I mean along the primary gist of this thread, mech-stuff... not even a 2CV, that suspension

Buuut GT5 could easily serve a practical desciscion making influence when it comes to all the other more visual aspects of purchasing an automobile.

Color, rims, trim maybe even upholstery etc.?

Go to any car manufacturer website and see how much work is put into all the "softer" aspects of deciding on which car to buy. Doe's red look good on a Ferrari? Or would you perhaps prefer a Focus ST being NOT green :yuck:

Sort of.

GT has made me consider cars that I normally wouldn't even go to the showroom to see, for example I was quite impressed by the Honda Integra in GT5:P and it would now be on my shortlist if I was to buy a car of that type.

I wouldn't base the entire decision off GT, but it certainly helps. Especially now we have full interior view etc.

Its more useful to help you rule out cars, for example "I dont like how X looks", "I dont like the dashboard on Y".

I wouldn't use it in place of the normal methods of collecting data, but that said, it has turned me on to cars that I otherwise might not have given much thought, such as the WRX and MR2.

Correct if I'm wrong, but how many people in NA or Europe knew about cars such as Skyline, Supra, and RX7 before GT first came out?
Supras and RX7s used to be quite common in the States.

But that decision would have been made based on its reputation as a great car - which would have been obtained from elsewhere, and not GT. I doubt you saw it on GT, had never heard of the car before, and just went out and bought one.

yes evo 9 there wasn't when i played first time gt series game...
but obiviusly, the brand mitsubishi evolution made me think...
i loved this car, i loved japanese cars from this title "gran turismo"
i were young so i didn't have the money ti buy a proper good car...
i never knew brand japanese so fast.. GT made me knew all this beautiful car, so when i got money, i buyed a evo 9...
in less word: i've buyed a japanese car for this game...

54% vote yes or maybe... are any of those people actually old enough to drive?

It's a game FFS, perhaps you could use it for choosing a colour, but it's not real driving.

:), good points, now I'm worried if there's going to be a 'Are You Old Enough To Drive Poll', spawned in the next few seconds :sly:.

missed one answer!!!!! - i had already buyed a car cuz i played gt2...
evo9...

I buyed Gran Turismo 2 too but not to help me decide on a car I eventually bought.

As I say, it may assist in deciding a car, but I certainly wouldn't rely on a GT game!! If I was to become serious, I would go straight to the car dealer, check it out in the showroom and test drive it.

Yes, clearly that's the point I may have somehow missed, clearly.

No. The cars that I could afford at this moment, I would be able to test drive in real life. The ones that you wouldn't be able to test drive like higher end sports cars and exotics, I wouldn't be able to afford anyways. I'll pretty much use it to buy cars and do things to cars that I can't afford to do in real life and race them on tracks that wouldn't be easily accessible to me in real life. Nicest race track around me is Brainerd Raceway but that is still over 2 hours away.

I would use Gran Turismo Series, to maybe pick some cars to look at! The problem with that is, most of the cars are old. Maybe if Gran Turismo came out every year, and had every car made!

No way.

Even the most realistic racing game try to reproduce car behavior on the edge, which you won't see in real life. And it doesn't reproduce at all how the car steer, how suspension works on different roads, are the seats good or not and so on so on.

So games are pretty much useless if you are buying the car. Test drive is a way to go

just with The game no, but with a first view in the game and a test with the dealer, of course 👍

It's like I see and make a first test in the game and if I'm interested then I'd be able to take the test with the dealer

In a word, yes. I tend to take a liking to certain cars in driving games, especially GT. I would take this, look at a Top Gear review, and then do a little research of my own before i were to purchase said car*. So GT is at least partly responsible for the sales of certain car brands, most notably Japanese brands. With the exception of Nissan (With their huge factory near where i live) i would not know much, if anything at all about Japanese car brands and probably would never have considered buying one. But now my mindset now is to buy a Japanese car. No idea why...

*Based on the assumption that i have the money to pruchase said car.

Yes, cause i can do performance upgrades and run test to get a general idea for cost and spec for a car to perform the way i would like. I love speed.

its nothing compared to driving the real thing

Well, there is no my car in Prologue, but there is in Forza 2. The game does very good job to reproduce the car image. When engine jumps to 7000 rpm you hear same sound, when you attack twisted road really hard it feels similar to driving in game on race track.

The question is how many people smash throttle to the ground in 200 HP car and dive into turns at high speed? And how often?

And when you drive to work or nearest shopping center, all cars drive same.

i fell in love with cars, racing and the nissan r32 GT-R through gran turismo...i would buy one in a heartbeat if it were a risk free buy....

but... its a car that stopped prod in 1994, nearly every example on the market has been molested...half of them dont have original kms , no history etc etc.... but if i ever found a gtr with semi low kms, a healthy unmodified motor, and a warranty of at least a year .. i would buy one in a heart beat... unfortunatly the only risk free gtrs you can buy are 10 second 1000hp capable weapons... which isnt practicle for a weekend streeter. :(

and for the record ive NEVER been in the drivers seat of a gtr.. ive ridden in a few.. never driven one though. and for the record i have the money to afford the purchasing price of a r32 gtr..... but the question is do i have the means to support a car that could cost me thousands of dollars just to keep it running.

The differences you notice in real cars can't really be noticed in the game.

Engine response, gearbox, brakes, comfort; all of these things you don't get an idea of while plaing a game.

That's what I'm trying to say.

I know :)

But i was referring to how you said all cars drive the same when going to the shops, but they don't, they feel different. But performance and handling, things you do notice in the game, will not usually matter in this instance, but the things i mentioned are noticeable when driving on regular roads.

I reckon GT5 may have some influence for me to decide what car to buy in the future, but obviously it wouldn't be a high priced car!

LMAO! I bought a '99 3000GT TT because of Gran Turismo.. then trade it to a 350z because of Gran Turismo. Damn you Gran Turismo I love that car! I might trade in my 350z because of gran turismo to a R35? Anyone?

Gran Turismo is telling me to buy a Violet Viper ACR, anyone got one for sale?

I am sure in the vast majority of cases GT5 would never be the deciding factor for an individual to buy a car but I am sure it can influence a person to various degrees.
